A raise basically always comes along with tenure, but a small one that gives the feeling of a thumbs-up more than anything substantial.
I'm curious if that low salary is mostly from the humanities paying jack shit across the board, or if CoC also has low pay even for a small, student-centered school.

This is commensurate with the salary of my friends who are humanities professors at a large state university before they got tenure. Charleston is a significantly higher cost-of-living area than where my friends live.
Has Rhys ever discussed his immigration status? I'm guessing he must have a green card sponsored by College of Charleston; a work visa wouldn't seem to be sufficient for a professor who's ostensibly planning to spend his career in the US.
Rhys makes another allusion to having a romantic partner:
He makes it seem like he bought a house with another person but willingly opted out of having demonstrable legal ownership (ie, a title with his name on it), but I'd bet he's misrepresenting the situation. The person he lives with probably already owned the house before Rhys moved in, or they're renting from a third party. Or else "our home" refers to him and his roommate.

My Canadian academic buddies who took US jobs got more permanent sponsorships across the board, so yes, that assumption seems safe.

Also, only a sped would buy a house in someone else's name because they are scared of the internet. Legal ownership of the home is more important (if you're actually paying the mortgage), otherwise you are paying for someone else to accrue the equity with no guarantee that you can claim it later. Eh there are (expensive) ways to get around it, such as buying a house under a Trust you are a beneficiary of, or having a Lien or Mortgage listed on the Title with a company you own.
That said, I thought most tenured/tenure-track professors usually get housing through the college.

for instance, he claims to care about racism-but pointedly chose to attain tenure at a school that is not racially representative for its area & never has been. CofC has only 8% African American students in a state/city that is 30% African American. why would a lefty want tenure there?
CofC is pretty well-known for this disparity, going all the way back to Reconstruction. its a sticky issue, part of their Jim Crow history. Surely rhys knows? yet we've never seen him mention it a single time.

I clicked through to the original Tweet when I saw this - zillions of responses from troons screaming "THAT'S NOT HOW BIOLOGY WORKS OMG!!!" "CIS PPL R STUPID!!!" etc etc. The sperm cake is silly but the basic idea is not wrong; I can't figure out what troons think the problem is. Maybe I should shut up and listen to "trans voices" on the topic so I can understand.
