Every single artist I've known who never made less than three digits a piece interacts as little with the fandom as possible. They make friends irl or with their hobby, and then come back to tard cum the fandom twice a month. Only mediocre artists have to interact and post hot takes on Twitter.

If furries had any discipline thry could make $250 before lunch, but they're stunted babies who never mentally graduated from high school.

I know quite a few people who only follow artists for the porn and not because they want to hear a guy who draws dog dicks rant about politics. You don't need much to become a popular furry artist if you keep your head low in that community and can draw.

Many of them are lonely guys who work tech jobs where they get a ton of money, but lack any identity outside of their fandom. This being combined with their overtly sexual identity and friendships forget trough their fursonas make them spend a ton of money.

Not all furries are rich and loaded, but the furry with a loaded tech job and no identity is a very common archtype, just look at some Google SREs or other furries with tech companies in their bio. They lack any sort of identity, but buying into the furry fandom has given them a brand new "unique" identity (that happens to be identical to that of 400 other furries) and friends. Another common archtype however is the "broke furry" who just has to get to cons or spend money on art, and someone like Hulex is pretty much that archtype along with numerous troons. They might burn through $9 an hour jobs and always be broke, but thanks to their parents/ebegging they can stay afloat long enough to travel from con to con.

I noticed something just now about the fandom.

A lot of the ones stuck in their ways are hangers on getting older by the year

The ones that seem to insist on bending to the will of a 6 year old and not taking heads off in public, complaining how the new wave of younger furries are willing to callout the demons the older ones let lay amongst themselves (pedos, zoos, etc)

And many of these supposed minors into zoo are clearly fake, have turned out to be fake, so on as a mean to normalise zoo as cub and loli/shota is to normalise CP

A lot of it has to do with furries being part of the fringe libertarian portion of the political spectrum and that has usually had a close relationship with the Democrat party until recently. Lately, there's been a bit of a split and the animosity among the various groups on the left has caused some furries to start aligning with the right or becoming apolitical. That being said, many of the popular fur-sites are owned by folks with a heavy left-leaning position so they tend to get run off to places like u18chan and the /trash/ board on 4chan. Like I could kiiiinda see it back in the day when the furry fandom had a lot of pretty decent non-pornographic artists (not to say porn wasn't part of it, just that not all the most popular artists were drawing exclusively porn) so it might've been a neat way to meet decent artists in person.

Unfortunately the way convention culture has gone over the years most decent artists have decided it's not worth the drama or bullshit and all that's left is the fetish/drugs. I suspect it's almost more of a cred hit for some artists to go to a con than something that would boost their acceptability among normies now too, especially for artists who aren't pandering to the pornographic audience.

Quite a few furries these days tend to also be the far-left leaning offendotrons with pronouns in their bio that you'll find all the fucking time on Twitter. A few of them are full on antifa larpers Phil style. Whenever there is a political shitstorm involving people raging at or "canceling" someone, there are going to be a few pronoun furries involved and at least one who identifies as trans.

As for what led to this, probably the fact that the furry fandom has had a greater proportion of lifestylers compared to the rejected nerds it used to have. There are a lot of broken people looking for a prefabricated, turnkey identity and the furry fandom provides one such identity. The rise of Tumblr, the politicization of hobbies/fandoms/communities, and Trump's victory and the fallout have made this even worse. The end result is both dog penis artists telling you about how right wingers can't masturbate to their art, and this:

There are a lot of furries who tend to rely on the fandom as their self help group. I've seen furry groups have to kick people for shitting up groups with their depression or family/life issues nonstop. I've also seen groups that consist solely of these people, using an unrelated group as a "support group" because either the group admins participate in it or they're too limp wristed to kick those who keep moaning.

The fact furry cons don't have much of a real focus has also enabled panels like this. At least anime or gaming conventions have a general focus on what's on the tin to a degree, even if anime cons have become "nerd cons". Furry cons are really just large scale furry meetups, except they get to fuck in the hotel rooms.
