Unlike other people here who have threads, it's still not too late to turn his life around. The cyber security industry will hire people with criminal records, which is a big no-no in other high-paying fields. He might be able to score diversity points and he has a good résumé if he puts one together.
The SM64 community is in the process of going through and attempting to decompile the entire codebase. It helps that MIPS is very reasonable and there's quite a bit of documentation.
I know a few people involved in implementing old consoles in FPGAs, and they're brilliant people yet very normal to talk to. I hope people don't get a bad view of assembly programmers based on a few crazies.
