So, Shad is pretty much retiring?

I mean, I can't say I blame him given his fans and all the negative attention his artwork has brought him over the years and the fact that he said he was going to be taking down the more controversial parts of his archives (like the loli and the gore) might've been a sign that he was going to quit entirely.

Is he going to keep the archives of his site up or is that going down too?

Maybe Shad is trying to drum up some publicity and then make a "surprise" comeback, but I highly doubt it. My guess is that Shad is tired of drawing porn and wants to branch out as an artist.

I would not be surprised that part of why his art took such a noticeable decline over the years because of the repetition that came with his line of work and maybe he wants a fresh start?

He'd have to change his pen name and go above and beyond to cover his past to get taken seriously, but it's doable.

I'm going to be the Devil's Advocate and say that he is entirely to blame for the type of crowd and negative attention he attracted. He relished in being an vocal edgelord, playing the part and drawing themes and imagery that attracted people with borderline personalities and tastes, and after years of pushing all the wrong buttons he is reaping what he sowed.

Mind you, he has every right to change course but even then his artistic decline is not something that can change by refocusing his effort towards other themes. He could have continue improving his skill regardless of the smut but he chose otherwise because the whole reason he attracted a crowd was not because of the quality of his work but for the shock value of it, so he became complacent. An artist that gets to a "bare minimum good enough" skill level and plateaus for years and even regresses, as his most recent art shows, is not the type that had improvement of his skills as a goal.

Maybe someone could point me to an instance of Shad responding to criticism of his art on a technical level, that would be a good method to judge if he is willing to listen to it or if he simple disregards it out of hand.

Anyone who doesn't build their fandom well eventually succumbs to this and Shad tried but failed to change his tune multiple times. Besides being a edgelord there's barely anything else that distinguishes him from current smut artists as being a memelord is all he has. Thing about the people he attracts is that they're the hardest and worst people to keep around as we live in the internet age where everything is accessible everywhere so if his type of fans don't get their fill of edgy topical content they will flock elsewhere.

Nobody cares about him trying to be wholesome because people never came to him for that they came for smut and whatever the topical internet thing was for that week.

Eh, if Shad can improve his technique again and start making clean (or at least tasteful) art under a completely new name that can't be directly tied to him (at least not in an obvious way), he could get a fresh start and rebuild a better fandom that can be more easily curated and managed.

But I do agree he created the current mess he's in.

Just my personal opinion, but there are tons of people who like at least something Shad had put out in the past. I never liked his art early on, and then once in awhile I would see something I liked, so I started following him on NG just to see if there might be more. It meant wading through lots of unappealing stuff, but there was always something. I think most of the 'hate' for Shad is mostly manufactured or just gullible people following whatever's trendy or memeworthy. Obviously he's a decent enough artist depending on what he decides to draw, and he's consistently made stuff for so long that he's famous now across the internet. If whatever latest controversy is driving him off the internet or doing him in, I'm gonna be real sad that he's gone, since like I said, he's always been consistent, he's always continued to exist through thick and thin, if the door's gonna be closed on that forever then that's a part of internet history dying too.

I honestly don't think he's retiring (as one seems to be an appreciation post for all the goofy ass shit that litters his comments section on facebook and the other is an obvious joke tweet) but he has talked about putting the site on hold for awhile so he can improve on artwork, mentioning that he hasn't had much time to improve due to constantly updating his site.

But if he pulls a JLullaby and goes radio silent for more than I'll give him two or three weeks, I'll consider him retired or he's taking a break for whatever reason that may be for him.
