Monica's not a victim of sexual assault.
Powerleveling time.
I volunteer as a counselor at a local VA clinic. For obvious reasons (namely HIPPA) I won't give out names or PII. I've seen a lot of cases of depression from things such as PTSD (it helps to have a BA in psychology sometimes). My position was mainly, "We have a veteran who just wants to talk to someone, you mind seeing him? If he needs more than you can provide submit a referral." It was basically someone wanted to talk, and it was better for them to talk to a veteran who responded like a veteran (sometimes they just want to hear a voice remind them they're still a bitch, don't ask me why. It just makes them laugh. Maybe it's just a dopamine thing, I don't fucking know.). One in particular was from a charge nurse who came in. "We have no psychologist on call and we don't want to have to send her to the hospital in Boston, can you talk to her?"
"Sure, what's it about?"
"Suicidal. She's a rape survivor."
"Above my paygrade but sure, I'll talk to her."
This had happened ten years ago. Something had triggered the memory and she was absolutely devastated by it at a time when she wasn't in the best frame of mind. We spoke for possibly four hours, and she walked out of there better. There were no jokes, there was nothing like that. She'd end up seeing me three more times after that, and she was a lot happier. When we'd talk about the rape, her mood would change: we'd go from lighthearted banter and jokes to...you could feel it. The air became heavier, I suppose. She didn't want to see a psychiatrist but I explained to her she was exhibiting signs of moderate depression and that was something I couldn't help her overcome. Talking is fine but she needed help beyond anything I could do. It's been about five years now and we still talk on occasion. Hell she knows my girlfriend and they're pretty good friends.
The point is that when it comes to a situation like this that you're recalling, your mood isn't jovial. You're not making jokes, you're not smiling, you're not laughing. This is a traumatic event, one in which subconciously you react to negatively. Everything Monica said and did during her deposition said she was lying. This is basic psychology, and it flew in the face of what I have seen when it comes to shit like this.
