I think it's a bit of both. The better question is: are they actual autists, or "lol I'm so weird and quirky but it's ok I self-diagnosed a poorly understood disorder look how interesting I am" autists? Because the second is the same group that would troon out for attention.
A lot of the reasons posed above are why I think a lot of autistic people are trans or why so many become ridiculous troons. Of course, you will have genuine autistic people who are trans but a lot will just think of being trans as a quick fix to their lack of understanding of society.
The slightly socially anxious (usually) gen z girl who is coming to terms with being gay/bi and in the past would have just been heavily into goth culture seems to now think you can cuss out at the world by exaggerating your completely normal human traits into being mental health conditions and transness. The amount of people I knew when I was young who were anxious, bisexual, emo kids who are now munchie, pronoun bending, illness collecting autists is truly outstanding.
Also I know detransitioning has been mentioned earlier in this thread and all over the farms but this news report is really interesting. I cannot find the link online but I seen stats recently which had the figured of people being referred to trans clinic skyrocket, again - not really a bad thing as less stigma means more people can come out but the stats for mtf and autistic people who were transitioning were in crazy numbers.
