Diseased Open Source Software Community - it's about ethics in Code of Conducts

One actually good talk is How Your Personal Information is Obtained and Exploited to Manipulate Your Emotions, Your Actions, and Your Vote
It's pretty long but at the end he goes on a rant about how politicized HOPE and 2600 has become and how far they've strayed from the hacker philosophy and they literally turn off the lights and push him off the stage mid sentence.

So as usual when SJW cancer takes over, whatever your group was previously about is dead, and it's about SJW shit. Nothing useful will ever get produced by the group except more cancer until it dies or rids itself of the cancer. Instead of hard data on technical issues, you get mindless dicksucking of absolutely no use.

SJWs: REEEEE REEEEEE change your name change your name.
GIMP: lol fuck off

And what happened then? Literally fucking nothing.
Depends on the project. If GIMP development was being conducted by employees of Red Hat or Microsoft, or the funding was coming from those enemy corporates, then they'd fall into line. Fortunately the lead devs seem to be funded by Patreon campaigns, the GNU project or less evil corporates.

But make no mistake, there are very good reasons the enemy attacked Stallman and thus the GNU Project. They want their money power to be even more monopolistic, to have more power to attack actual free software developers.

She's a real woman, she's also a lesbian tho, take that as you will.
That some men who would otherwise have been superthirsty might have been able to have platonic working relationships with her?

Technically gimp is part of GNOME which is Red Hat's catspaw but they don't actually bother funding it so the devs are free to be as obscure as they like.

I remember watching one defcon talk about the networks of fake academic articles mills, and some 20-30 minutes in he starts to talk about its relevancy when "countries like russia interfere with elections" blah blah blah.
Nigger you're an austrian journalist not a US intelligence analyst. Instead of talking about how that shit can be used to inform policy, or go further and mention the Sokal affair, he goes there.
Nothing is sacred, everything is pozzed.

Nothing has fallen further than 2600 and their HOPE conference though.

Apparently HOPE has been forced out of Manhattan so it's probably the end of the conference anyway.

2600 has always had a strong liberal bent. Back in 2013 they were dedicating way to much time in their podcasts for de Blasio. But since 2016 the magazine editorials have gone full TDS and are always complaining about Trump, racism and such. Occasionally they'll print a letter from a Trump supporter and pretend to be respectful of both sides.

They're objection to Wikileaks was that Assange should have basically dumped all of the leaks and not try to editorialize for maximum impact, and if they had the leaks they'd publish them all in print. I don't believe them.

I'm surprised that thread was so brief. That seems like it should have been a fun shitshow.

Hacker News comments have been generally pretty good. They are only obnoxious and fawning when one of their "beauty pageant" winners turns up to opine.

I agree with that in general. I think Wikileaks went to shit when they started overtly taking sides. They were already "problematic" (in its usual sense) when Assange was still around and in charge, though, and from their very inception. While a lot of their material is invaluable and the organization has done a great public service (even including the questionably motivated leaks), the organization itself reflects its founders attention whoring personality.

(Edit: That's the recent batch of Coraline Ada Ehmke Twitter screenshots)

I know this is kind of old by now but I'm catching up with the thread, and I'm dumbstruck by the black-and-white thinking here; that an action must be absolutely good in order to be worth doing.

If I donate $100 to a soup kitchen, that'll buy enough soup that it's statistically likely that some of that money will be used to feed an unrepentant bigot, an unconvicted rapist or wife-beater, or even a Trump voter among all the other people who will be fed. So I guess by Corey's moral calculus, it's best if I don't donate…

I do strongly believe that OSS has done net good to humankind. I know that people I don't like might be using some of my code to help them do things I don't like, but I don't lose sleep over such hypotheticals. Meanwhile, the all-too-rare messages from people saying "hey, I just discovered your project and it really helped me out. Thanks for sharing this" put me over the moon. That's what doing OSS is all about. If you can't find that joy because you're too worried about what your political enemies might be doing with your code, maybe it's time to try something else.

As for Hacker News, I agree that it's an island of sanity in a sea of wokeness. It helps that posts with controversial political baggage tend not to make it to the front page in the first place, but when they do you can generally state an unwoke opinion in the comment thread and not be downvoted to oblivion if you're at least civil about it. I think it helps that you don't get downvote or flag privileges until your account has earned a certain amount of karma first, so only those who have been on the site for a while and/or have made useful contributions to the community will be able to bury your posts - most woke people won't get that far.

Literally this entire thread

You should both check out n-gate for a ... very different perspective on Hacker News.
The good thing about Hacker News is that most of it's users are reasonable enough to not give a shit about someone taking the piss. Lots of communities treat directed satire as bannable wrongthink (xkcd, somethingawful, forums I'm afraid to risk powerleveling), meanwhile on HN: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13759706

Hacker News is ultimately a bunch of bored, tech adjacent people who are dissatisfied with where they currently all in life. There's heavy biases towards the SV trends, meaning almost everyone is either a lib or libertarian, but overall it's a decent place. The two mods also do a damned good job, and are proof positive that you get what you pay for, even when it comes to jannies.

How horrible would it be to work in a firm filled with people like that? That has to be hell.

While this is old news (from September of this year), it finally went trending on Hacker News:

The open source project osxfuse went closed source, then changed the license terms to bar corporate use. As the code is permissively licensed, he can do this if he wants to. The reason? He wasn't getting paid fuck all for this by companies using this code for their commercial projects and he was mostly the sole dev.

Monetary compensation seems to be the main theme shaping up with FOSS projects, even moreso than the Coraline Ada types trying to come up with restrictive licenses.

Kinda reminds me of Aseprite but without even the bullshit pretense of still being able to view the source code.

The maintainers of the Linux FUSE subsystem are probably even less appreciated, despite that being more useful to more real people. You don't see them whining about how they don't get paid.

Like, what would you think of someone who, after years of volunteering with the elderly, started vocally complaining that not a single old person had left him money in their will? What a fucking arsehole. Just pass the maintainership to someone else if you don't want to do it anymore.

It’s hilarious to see the FOSS commu

nity swing from the hippie/commie Stallmanites who believed nobody should ever make money from software, to the new regressive groom freak shows who think that they should be able to restrict who can use their software and are entitled to profit from it. Horseshoe theory in one smelly geek community, just separated by time!

So Microsoft decided to spread some cheap holiday cheer by putting a Santa hat on a cogwheel icon in a recent Visual Studio Code update. Here's a screenshot.

Of course, doing so was pretty much akin to starting a second Holocaust.

The Santa Hat on vscode insiders and pushing of religion is very offensive to me, additionally xmas has cost millions of Jews their lives over the centuries, yet even if that was not the case, pushing religious symbols as part of a product update is completely unacceptable. Please remove it immediately and make it your top priority. To me this is almost equally offensive as a swastika.

What a ridiculous comment! There's no way that anyone would take this seriou-

@Christian-Schiffer we're sorry we hurt your and other's feelings. We'll remote the Santa Hat.

Now putting the Santa hat in in the first case was kinda dumb, but then rushing to remove it because it's literally KILLING JEWS is even more so. So of course the pendulum must swing back: Santa Hat removal on vscode insiders and bending to one jew is very offensive to me

The reaction votes on the posts are on the side of keeping the Santa hat, by the way.
