I think the main problem is that they're trying to be counterculture comedians while also being the arbiters of what is or isn't mainstream. It is perfectly possible to mock Trump. For as much as I support him, he is quite mockable. But nobody in the mainstream media or the Prime Ministers of NATO look brave for doing so. A jester is brave when he mocks a king, a king is petty and tyrannical when he mocks a jester.And late night news and/or comedy shows are supposed to also be entertainment too. I believe I'm being quite fair when I say they lose to people like Ashens or RLM. You can't be funny due to assrage, then you suffer the price of people leaving to watch other things. Like Ashens filming 130 year old olives on his couch. Or Mike Stoklasa melting a bunch of toys in acetone.
The result is the media's problems will extend beyond Trump, until the current mainstream is overthrown completely.
