Christmas truly came early this time around. A toast to the leaks and to the mysterious LA theater employees who leaked everything. Merry Christmas to them.

Nah, killing Anakin Solo was a great idea. First, it was a genuinely unexpected plot twist and raised the stakes. I hate unnecessary and contrived character deaths (Luke in The Last Jedi), but Anakin went out like a badass on a suicide mission, and it's war. That shit happens. Second, it allowed Jacen to become a sort of unexpected hero, and he ultimately ended up a much different character to Anakin Skywalker and Luke. Anakin Solo was getting sort of interesting in the very last book he appeared in, but it wasn't as good as Jacen's already existing characterization (pacifist and gentle soul in crisis, forced to grow up; it was such a great continuation of YJK's version of Jacen and showed how serious things were getting) and it certainly doesn't compare to his character development in Traitor. Third, the books made a very good point that the Jedi putting so much faith into one guy from one lineage would be their undoing, and sometimes things go wrong. It was almost commenting on the fact that Luke's NJO was dangerously close to repeating the same mistakes of the old Order, where they put their faith in Anakin Skywalker and he fell to the dark side.

On a less spergy note, it cannot be overstated how disastrous it is that they brought bringing people back to life to Star Wars. They may not have went down the time travel route like people were predicting, but they sure as hell went for the equally bad other option.
I understand your reasoning and you make some good points, but I still respectfully disagree as I personally found Anakin Solo to be a more likeable character all around for me, and his death as being a part of "these things happen" (much like the other forced deaths in the NJO saga) is not something that should be expected since SW is still fiction with its own unique laws that should allow for things to happen that would normally not be considered the norm IRL, such as for heroes to overcome challenges or something completely different to occur, and seeing Jacen die in exchange would've been just as good a trade off for me, at least if a Solo kid had to die. But again, while I respectfully disagree, I understand your points and I really don't want to change your mind as I respect your admiration of Jacen's character. There's a genuine appreciation and understanding for the story and its contents there, unlike with Disney drones who just mindlessly consume and defend without reason. So honestly, its just pleasant to be able to discuss this kind of shit again. Can't remember the last time I had a pleasant disagreement.

Can disney even recover from this to save the ip at this point?

"The Mandalorian" gives some hope. Disney's mistake was treating this IP like all the other IPs they had. They figured they could just make their own science fiction fantasy schlock, slap a Star Wars Label on it, and call it good because everyone would just eat it up.

The Problem is Star Wars is not just another IP. Its cultural importance puts it way above franchises like Ghostbusters, Terminator or even the Marvel stuff. I would posit that Star Wars, particularily the Original Trilogy falls more into the category of religious mythology. Its not 20,000 Leagues under the Sea. Its the Odyssey. Or the Book of Exodus. When you decide to make a movie out of these stories, you have to take extreme care. If you decide you want to make a movie about the Exodus of the Jews out of Egypt, you don't turn Moses into a Black Woman, make Pharaoh a white southern man, and then turn the story into an allegory of the emancipation of African American slaves. While you could certainly make a case for such an allegorical tale, using the Exodus story as the vehicle would outrage the people who care most about it. Mainly the Jews, and they would be super pissed about it. More importantly though, if you are making a movie about the Exodus, the Jews would be the target audience. Not black people. You would WANT the Black People to come to your Exodus movie with Moses as a black woman, but they won't. Because its not something relevant to them in the same way it is for Jews. So in the end neither the Jews, or the Black people will come. But the Jews will be super mad at you and become a "toxic fandom".

When you make a movie using a sacred mythos, you need to fit the movie to the mythos. Forcing the mythos to conform to the movie will not only fail, people will hate you for daring to do it. The Mandalorian understands this and the Sequel Trilogy does not.

*edit* and to pile onto this, in Ancient Greece, Theater was a form of not just entertainment, but also as a way to impart moral lessons and the teachings of the Gods. When you make a theater play involving Zeus, Aphrodite, and Hera, you can certainly turn it into a love triangle drama, but under no circumstances could you make Zeus come across as a bumbling idiot hermit drinking blue milk and being unwilling to assert himself and instead just lets Aphrodite and Hera run roughshod all over him. Not only would this be out of Characther for Zeus, it would be heretical sacrilege and the showrunners of such a play would probably have ended up lynched. Kinda like what many of us want to do to Rian Johnson for his depiction of Luke Skywalker.

Reactions from the usual twitter shills are starting to come in.
Unsurprisingly they love it, but mostly because of Reylo or nostalgiabait. Also reddit just deleted a bunch of accounts and leaked pics.

This is how out of touch I am with social media: I've never heard of these guys and I have no clue why they're so important. I do find this portion hilarious:

Hey, man, agree to disagree. I don't think it was a bad thing to kill off characters or destroy planets. If they didn't people would start to wonder why they're reading books where nothing interesting or consequential happens (as with many of the books before NJO, outside of Zahn's stuff), especially considering it's supposed to be a galactic war. Also, I grew up with the YJK series, so peak Star Wars to me is the OG crew (Jacen, Jaina, Lowbacca, Tenel Ka, Zekk, Raynar and M-TD) and it's going to influence my preference for Jacen as the hero of NJO. At least this is much less contentious than the prequel arguments in here. Still, Jacen was a great fucking character and the fact that he was deleted for a meme character that only exists as a commentary about toxic Star Wars fanboys obsessed with Vader and masturbation bait for self-inserting fangirls is appalling. Even as a Sith Lord in one of the worst Star Wars book series, Jacen still had more interesting elements to his character than Kylo (starting the chapters of Invincible with jokes he used to tell was genuinely depressing), and with some tweaking he'd be one of the most interesting Sith in the series. Also, Darth Caedus as a name is far more badass than Kylo Ren.

Reylos who haven't seen the leaks are going to be livid when they get to the theater and realize that "the conclusion to Rey-Kylo" that this dude is raving about is Kylo dying.

Still disagree on that one, I mean I have no issue with them bombing Coruscant. It sent a powerful message and it rocked the galaxy to the core. But there were also planets that didn't really need to go and just kinda needlessly fucked over things and species while taking away uniqueness from the galaxy, and their destruction really didn't make an impact on anything other than taking away interesting things from the galaxy that didn't even get a chance to be fully explored. For example, the destruction of Dac by the One Sith was a shameless loss, but it was impacting and it actually had a greater consequence on the galaxy due to its important shipyards and political influence. It was also treated with the emotion that kind of shit deserved. Also the unique fauna of that world wasn't lost thanks to how advanced and widespread the Mon Calamari and Quarren were, but the loss of their homeworld was still gruesome and it made a huge blow to an important part of galactic industry.

Also, I still don't even understand what they were trying to do with this "Kylo Ren" business. What the fuck is that name supposed to inspire? Is Ren supposed to be the new Darth? Is it a corruption of Ben? Why are the other Knights of Ren called Trudgen Ben, Swoopin Ben, etc? So if Ren isn't a corruption of Ben, is Ren the new Darth? Then wtf is Kylo supposed to mean? With Darth you kind of understood that it was like a nobleman title or rank which was then followed by something evil or representative of the Darth's character, like Darth Vader, Darth Maul, Darth Tenebros, Darth Nihilus, etc. But wtf is Kylo Ren supposed to inspire? Kyle Ren sounds fairly ordinary to boot. The name Darth Caedus on the other hand inspires something and the character is a far better execution of rogue Solo son turns villain, unlike the massive bipolar emo fagboy we get in the form of Kylo Ren. Hell Kylo Ren's name gets all the more moronic when you remember that it actually belonged to a fat old pirate from the Droids cartoon called Kybo Ren. Wow, such brilliant lore digging there JJ. The cartoon in question even had a character who looked like Rey.

I mean seriously, what does Kylo Ren even mean? The character is basically an ugly, more unstable and more incompetent version of Anakin. People wouldn't shut up for years about how they hated Anakin's characterization in the prequels, but then here comes those same flaws again but worse on an uglier face and now everyone wants to fuck this guy. PEOPLE WANT TO FUCK THIS GUY!

This is the face that inspired thousands of crazy fangirls to start stalking one of the most weird looking fellows in Hollywood? One who jerked it to Lena Dunham of all people?! Lena Dunham?!

The only thing I feel right now is Exogol and sadness; this fucking film is such a disaster.

I honestly feel so bad for the few kids I know will see this shit show in 3 days; especially the one who reacted with pain and rage when I spilled the Rey Skywalker scene and more. He's still seeing it because he can't believe it's going to be so bad... He's going to be disappointed.

He will cope. Grief is a normal thing and must be allowed to take place.

In this case, however, tell him to hold onto that pain, and remind him to direct it at where it came from.

I would have loved to have been the fly on the wall when it came to choosing the name of Kylo Ren. Seriously, I want to know who actually suggested that name. I have a sneaking suspicion that Pablo might have had a hand in it. The similarities between Kybo Ren and Kylo Ren is too much. I wonder if they were going through the old Holocron database and someone stumbled across the name of 'Kybo Ren' and though "Wait a moment... what if we changed Kybo... to Kylo!" What a genius fucking move.

Disney and Lucasfilm are calling this "the conclusion to the Skywalker Saga," and this movie does everything in its power to insult, retcon, and DESTROY the Skywalkers.

All nine films might as well be called the Palpatine Saga. It's HIS bloodline that survives all of this. The Skywalker bloodline is dead with Ben Solo; it's over. Rey can "claim" the Skywalker name all she wants; as long as she wants to pass down the Skywalker name via family, then Palpatine's blood will persist and live on. Palpatine WON. He fucking WON.

How does this inspire hope for the galaxy? This trilogy manages to make ALL of the efforts, struggles, and triumphs of the Skywalker family seem so ... Pointless! Fucking pointless!
