Star Wars Griefing Thread (SPOILERS) - Safety off

Hot Take:
This was the ending always planned for. It was going to end this way no matter what.

Look at how this mess ends:
Every single named villian, Dead.
Every single character from the OT, except Lando and Chewie (olds): Dead or wiped.
Empire: Recently defeated
Lord of the Sith: Defeated, at the cost of someone dear to -
Jedi: Gone except for the knowledge held by a single individual who recieved enough traing to consider themselves the last member of the order.

This sounds a lot like the end of the Return of the Jedi, except everyone (except Lando) is dead and Luke is a girl & has no sister.

I can generally understand clearing the slate on Disney's part, at least to use initial trilogy to give the classic fans something new to chew on while netting new fans. It might of worked too had they not been so...awful about how they handled classic elements or the hand-over from old generation to new.

You almost understand why the classic cast generally had nothing to do with the prequels or anything after the original trilogy for decades. I remember a few years before the sale to Disney, a British programme basically went hunting for the original cast to do a reunion and Hamill basically priced himself out of any interview and Harrison wasn't playing ball at all, most of the other cast members recorded video messages for the "reunion" or were side characters. They all got over their hang ups when Disney came knocking however.

Sure they didn't need to set up so all heroes from the original trilogy was happy. But basically everyone from the original trilogy gets a bad future. I can understand killing off Harrison asap as he probably wasn't super keen to begin with, but Hamill and Fisher seemed very keen to help out the new saga - only for Disney to turn around and give their characters horrid scenarios for TLJ. Granted we don't know if there was another plan for Leia before Fishers untimely passing.

It also would of helped if the new characters had more substance to them or had their potential properly realised. Finn probably the worst case because he had the most interesting set up. Of all the storm-troopers - why is he the only one to be affected by performing massacres and more capable of independent thought than the others? Couldn't they have figured out the trigger and then used that to disable the First Orders ranks from within?

All these plot threads for Finn basically end up being trashed just so Finn can beat on Phasma and left at that so he can spend the rest of the Trilogy being comedy relief. John Boyega went from being incredibly hyped for TFA to being fed up enough to drop some hints about his true feelings on RoS - at risk of mouse lawyers breathing down his neck.

It's crazy to think that I first ended up lurking in this thread when Galaxy's Edge was opening, and I was baffled at how Disney could fuck it up so badly. A company who practically defined the modern theme park managing to create nothing more than a glorified strip mall for fucking Star Wars of all things? The continued issues with Rise of the Resistance would probably be getting more attention if not for the current clusterfuck of Episode 9's release.

Over 500 pages later, I have to say it's been a wild ride. Many kudos to @GeneralFriendliness for finding and curating all the Disney Wars info all this time. This thread wouldn't be nearly as entertaining without all your hard work.

I've got one more feelsy anecdote to share, a sadder one. I mentioned before that my dad was the one who got me into Star Wars, and how he had been a fan since the very first movie. He even drove my cousins two hours to see the original Star Wars movie since none of the local theaters were playing it. That's how much he loved it, and he made sure to pass it on to the rest of us.

We've seen all of the mainline Star Wars movies together in theaters, from the Special Edition rereleases in '97, through the prequels, and then into Disney Wars (as far as I'm aware, he's never seen Rogue One or Solo, didn't seem to show much interest in either). After watching TFA, we were both pretty enthused by it. I distinctly remember saying "thank god it wasn't the prequels" as a compliment towards the movie. And hey, going off of years of prequel hate, it was pretty logical that that was my reaction. Sure, it was a blatant rehash of A New Hope, and it really didn't hold up to even a slight amount of scrutiny, but hey, at least it wasn't the prequels!

Fast forward two years, and we go to see TLJ in the theater. I'd already seen it once already and knew what was in store, but I wasn't going to dissuade my dad from our tradition. Maybe I'd even find something to enjoy about it on a second viewing, I rationalized. Suffice it to say, I didn't.

But the worst part was when we were on the way back to the car. My dad doesn't go to the movies often, but when he does, he'll definitely be talking afterwards about what he liked about it, much as we were after TFA.

He didn't say a damn thing. Not one single word. We just walked back to the car in silence.

To this day, I honestly don't know how he feels about it, but I can certainly infer. And my conclusion is that my dad was subjected to over two hours of Mr. Subverted Expectations shitting all over everything he loved, and he felt every second of it.

I have no idea if he wants to see Plan IX or not, but I'm going to watch it sometime next week probably (without giving Disney my money, of course; I intend on going to a weekday matinee, buy a ticket to something else, and swapping theaters), and if it's truly as bad as all the confirmed leaks are making it sound, I will warn him away from it. I should've told him not to see TLJ, but I'm not making the same mistake twice.

I reiterate: I hope the Rat fucking burns.

Honestly, it just confuses me why they render the EU noncanon, but nonetheless steal from that shit like it's okay to do so.

That's like making a doujin of Emperor Palpatine and Vader fucking like animals, but then all of a sudden it's canon, despite being rendered noncanon a few years back.

Disney is so fucking indecisive with this shit.

I had no problem with the idea in and of itself. The old EU was way too bloated with crappy stories. If I had been in charge, I would have scrapped everything except for the Thrawn Trilogy and a few other works. No Anakin Solo, either, because naming your son after his genocidal grandfather is just dumb. I would then set the films when the twins are in their mid-twenties and have the main characters be Luke and Mara's kids.

Why do yall keep calling it plan 9?

Because in Plan 9 from Outer Space, Bela Lugosi died during filming and they had to get a stand in to continue his role (basically the actor would cover his face to avoid people realising it's not Bela Lugosi anymore). In this they are using old footage of Leia because she died before they could film it.

Sorta similar situation where they Weekend at Bernie a dead person basically.

Well, that, and also the fact that we're expecting it to be as much of a shitshow as that legendarily bad movie. And with these early critic reactions, I'd say we might be on the money.

Yeah but that part was obvious to begin with!

I mean the reviews so far are painting an awful picture that may be worse than TLJ.

I'm briefly browsing this OST and I don't like it. I haven't liked any of his music for this trilogy and I can't exactly pinpoint the reason why. I don't want to accuse him of being lazy and phoning it in but IMHO it's felt like his heart hasn't been in it. There's also the issue that none of the new themes he's created has been memorable compared to what he made in the classic and prequel trilogies.

Oh yeah, the latest episode of The Mandalorian is out and
Baby Yoda starts Force choking the former Rebel trooper due to a misunderstanding until Mando steps in and he also performs a Force heal on Carl Weathers.

I've not been following this at all and somehow didn't know 9 was even coming out this month. Googled "Star Wars 9" and this was the description.

What the fuck is this? I know nothing about the film except that there's a big fight, which I don't care for. The "journey" is usually what the description describes.

4: "After Princess Leia, the leader of the Rebel Alliance, is held hostage by Darth Vader, Luke and Han Solo must free her and destroy the powerful weapon created by the Galactic Empire."
5: "Darth Vader is adamant about turning Luke Skywalker to the dark side. Master Yoda trains Luke to become a Jedi Knight while his friends try to fend off the Imperial fleet."
6: "Luke Skywalker attempts to bring his father back to the light side of the 'Force'. At the same time, the rebels hatch a plan to destroy the second Death Star."

Oldboy: "A man, held captive for no apparent reason for years, is given a cell phone, money and expensive clothes and released. Unless he finds out the identity of his captor, an even worse fate awaits him."

Even 2 has a more intriguing plot synopsis.
2: "While pursuing an assassin, Obi Wan uncovers a sinister plot to destroy the Republic. With the fate of the galaxy hanging in the balance, the Jedi must defend the galaxy against the evil Sith."

How fucking bad is this movie?
