female protagonist/character is pretty irrelevantFor the record, how many agree that the problem wasn't inherently the idea of a female protagonist for the sequel trilogy, it was just done poorly?
For a third trilogy a female protagonist was a good idea just to differentiate it from the prior two trilogies if nothing else, the trouble is they forgot to make Rey an actual character.
HE MIGHT'VE DONE IT

InternationalThe Rise of Skywalker: Europe has fallen! Joker may have beaten Rise of Skywalker in Italy! (self.boxoffice)

I have a bad feeling about this ~
And didn't Deadline suggest that TROS was outselling Avengers: Endgame in presales? *facepalm*

French Opening Day:
Bastien on Box Office Theory stated "Aproximately 380k admissions yesterday in France. It is really underwhelming."
The Force Awakens: 619,020
The Last Jedi: 503,727
The Rise of Skywalker: 380,000 (-25% / TLJ & -39%/TFA)
Which happens to be the worst opening day for for the franchise in France since Return of the Jedi in 1983.
German Opening Day:
According to Mark G. of Insidekino, it'll do about 300k, which is 30% less than The Last Jedi.
Italian Opening Day:
Rise of Skywalker made about 1,136M€ (1,27M$) in it's opening day in Italy, with the tracking estimated to being around 10% less than The Last Jedi. Joker beat it (I believe) with an opening day of 148.766k, in which it made €1.232.535. We'll have to see when the numbers come in officially.
Conclusion:
So far it has made $10.2mn from 4 markets, and it has been suggested if the United Kingdom follows the same pace it'll have an opening weekend from those markets of around $20-25 million.

That's one thing I DID like, Luke having no kids. Lucas never liked the idea and it was never set up in the films. I liked the idea of Luke being married to the force(I never cared for Mara Jade either-outside of Zahn stuff)...Outside of people like those at One Autistic Gamer, no one cared about the MC having bobs. When Ridley was first announced, I figured that she was Luke's daughter and I think most everyone would have been fine with that. Like you said, it'd help her stand out and it would have been a good way to differentiate the sequels from the EU where he had a son.
They could have easily adapted the Thrawn Trilogy with minor modifications to the timeline to account for the actors’ age and rolled in money. It would have been easy, lazy, and profitable, but instead they chose to crash the franchise with no survivors. Don’t excuse them by pretending they couldn’t have done anything else.Yeah but even a five-star chef can’t make fecal matter into a decent meal. And I compare Star Wars to shit in the sense that we’d already consumed it and gotten all the good stuff out of it by the time Disney bought it. And the way they marketted the purchase by throwing classic Star Wars imagery all over the place was writing on the wall that it was gonna end this way.

He only did it to capitulate to whining fans.
Narratively, it makes way more sense the bloodline would pass through Leia/Han...
Now, adopted child of Luke? I could get behind that, if it was developed and earned....
This franchise has become a really drawn out way to burn money and I can’t wait to see the fire.Make of this what you will, but things don't look good for The Rise of Palpatine in Europe.
The difference between this and Twilight is that Star Wars put out respectful media in its lifetime. Twilight started as shit, and remained shit in all of its iterations, so people were rightfully making fun of it throughout its lifetime (until Lindsay Ellis said hating Twilight meant you hated women or whatever). Meanwhile, Star Wars you can at least hold out hope that it's good, because it made other content that was good before, until you get to the end and realize you wasted your time and money. Also I know this has probably been done to fucking death already but seriously.... what the actual fuck were they thinking in with the "Rey falls in love with Kylo Ren" horseshit?!
I mean setting aside the fact he is a mass murdering psychopath who gleefully participated in the biggest genocide in history, his only interactions with her were trying to murder her, torturing her, killing the guy she latched on to as a new daddy and....then they are fucking force flirting with eachother in the next movie?! and then after he AGAIN tries to fucking kill her and all her fri....acquaintances and spends a year going full Hitler on the galaxy she just straight up drops her proverbial panties for him the moment he apologises?!
Like the proto SJW hordes absolutely fucking evicerated twilight for centring round a romance thats not even slightly this fucking creepy and unnatural and abusive but they fucking fawn over this shit?
For that matter dafuq was the basis for the "oooh rey is being temped by the dark side oooooo" plotline!?
The actual fuck was she being tempted by other then "hey...wanna be evil and stuff?"
Like...if she perhaps was not a stupidly overpowered mary sue then maybe an outmatched and inexperienced protagonist fighting a very definitively losing fight over the course of the movies could legit be tempted to just go full fucking Vader in order to defeat the nu empire but Rey easily fucking wins everything she fucking does so there is literally zero fucking reason why she would be tempted...hell she isnt even angry about how evil the first order and Kylo are because as specified above she doesnt give two shits about that...
The reason I am sperging about this particular plot point is that this is what the critics and consoomers are declaring the "one redeeming feature" of TROS and im sitting here wondering what the fuck they are talking about....seriously am I missing something here?!
At least /tv/ has the meme game going

Theoretically that shouldn't be the result of the gender of the character, but in cases like these it almost always is. A male character is expected face adversity and to grow because of it. A female character isn't expected to grow, because they should be "enough" as they already are. That means that for a female character adversity is less of a generative force, less constructive in a way. Usually at best it can lead to them finding out who they really are deep down or who they were prevented from being for the entire time. That's in contrast to the male character usually becoming something else, with the old self being superseded.'rey' on the other hand is just an uninteresting, forgettable and pointless character, in a bunch of uninteresting exceptional individual movies with dogshit writing and plots that make no sense.
You know it's been a good night at the Farms when you wake up to this;

I love the smell of Schadenfreude in the morning.... now to catch up on 30+ pages of spergery.
I would be fine with adoption, but the whole not married thing came off as Lucas being bitter about his own love life. Plus it resulted in the Jedi kidnapping kids to refill their ranks. Finally, since George insisted that the Force is genetic on some level, the Jedi Order is literally removing force sensitivity from the gene pool.
I don't think it needed to be for ideological reasons, but practical/narrative ones.
Luke had the entire responsibility of rebuilding the Jedi, a family would be(most likely) negleted. His students would be his legacy/children.
Plus, it gave (the tacked on)Leia being Skywalker, narrative weight...
Agree too, I really didn't care the gender, I'm a huge fucking fan of Aliens, to me the best fight is Ripley vs the alien queen going full mama bear, Rey on the other hand can't stand watching her fucking titless face anymore. For the record, how many agree that the problem wasn't inherently the idea of a female protagonist for the sequel trilogy, it was just done poorly?

When TFA came out I thought they were going for an ex storm trooper turn into jedi and that was great, the idea fade away few minutes after that because this motherfucking hacks can't write to save their lives. But, in hindsight, I think Finn would have made for a better protagonist than Rey. Boyega is a better actor than Ridley. Plus, the idea of a defecting force sensitive stormtrooper with no past/name, inherenting the Skywalker legacy sounds pretty great.
