Here's the thing, he made a card that is an 80 hp basic Pokemon that can do up to 60 damage + damage to the bench for only 3 energy. There isn't a single Pokemon card from that time that was even close to being that strong.Yeah, even for 2001 era pokemon cards, those just seem kind of "meh" in terms of playability. Like some of those promo/novelty cards they used to give out that were cool but really weren't competitive.
Powerscaling is some shit I heard my weeb friends who watch anime say, but basically its a definite way of saying how strong or weak a character is. DBZ used to do it with Power Levels.
But running on the Pokemon example, the OP original Charizard card was objectively good 100HP with a 120 damage attack (or was it 120HP, 100 damage?) even with a high energy cost and flimsy usability. One could easily compare it to lets say Pikachu with 40HP and a 10 damage attack and see that Chrizard is objectively stronger than Pikachu. Chris's pokemon cards look like he just copied two random cards (it looks like he basically copied-pasted Raichu's stats & attack for one of them) and just threw Sonichu characters on top. Like I would expect his Shining Sonichu to have like 150HP and a 120 damage attack that takes 1 energy to charge and lets you discard your opponent's entire deck - yet his cards seem rather mild, competitively speaking.
Those promo cards like Mewtwo that you think were weak were actually extremely relevant in the meta back then and were considered hard counters to many popular decks. At least know what the fuck you're complaining about.
