My former neighbor got sick of her two older kids always getting in trouble, so she pulled them out of middle school and claimed to be "home schooling" them, but there was no way she was doing anything -- they ran all over the neighborhood and were constantly getting into trouble. I don't know HOW the fuck she managed to do that.

Both can be explained by Desmond becoming a male teenager. He's growing taller than his mother soon and he wouldn't want to be close to her any more.

Desmond hasn't watched that movie, I'm sure. Nor has he listened to Just a Girl or the Sex Pistols or anything he performs. It's the mother who probably only shows him pictures or clips and says "wouldn't this be fun?!".
If Desmond was left to do drag of his own taste, he'd use completely different imagery, more childish or inspired in things that are more proper for kids. But, of course, it's not about him but about fulfilling her mother's fantasies. He doesn't really give a shit beyond making mommy happy.

I hope the look of boredom in Desmind is caused by being forced to take a picture instead of being left alone to play rather than because he got something he didn't actually want on Christmas. Every kid is different, but those look a bit out of age for him. Not saying twelve years old kids don't like these sets, but they would rather electronics or NERF stuff to play with their friends outside.
