Elaborating on my earlier suggestion for a way different trilogy:
For the decades since the emperor's end, Leia serves the New Republic as its principal leader, a heroine of its denizens, a defender. Yet as the NR runs into problems as befits a new polity that just came to be in the Empire's wake, the Empire's insurgents and other advocates of the old regime scheme and plot. The NR loses members, perhaps some even even turn against it, warring, all while the Insurgents despite all her efforts becomes bolder and bigger. Her faith in the ideals of the Republic, the Force, wavers as she becomes desperate and embittered, while seeking to learn more from the Force User side of her heritage, slowly gravitates toward the dark. Ultimately, they make a pact.
Kylo in this version actually gets his start as a Sith Lord from his mommy.
