Put another way, it's like the confrontation at the end of Dune: the person who really controls a shared asset is the one who's willing to destroy it. SA's posters might or might not be willing to take their money and bail, but Lowtax is most definitely chained to the forum as his only means of support. It doesn't matter if they're bluffing. He has to fold either way.

Not to PL more than necessary, but I dealt with Kyanka briefly in a professional capacity back in the early 2000s, and I knew guys who'd worked with him even earlier, back in the Planet Quake days. I think he's realised that depending on the goodwill of SA posters for his income isn't a viable long term strategy and that there's no option available to him which isn't going to lose some of that goodwill.

Increasing the income from the forums themselves would depend a lot on attracting new posters and that's difficult to do without a cohesive identity. It's the long term posters who are willing to tolerate the technological deficiencies of the forum and its schizophrenic nature. They're not selling points for attracting new members.

It's possible Lowtax has finally accepted that there's not a huge market for edgy comedy today, no matter how appealing he finds it personally. That he's willing to apply the Barney crew rules across the entire site but not willing to shutter FYAD permanently suggests that he's already decided the future of the forums, even if he doesn't like it. He was probably genuinely surprised to find his suggested compromise solution was rejected.

It's becoming obvious that the troons will become the main influencers of the direction of the forums, and I believe that's a fate SA deserves. If Lowtax didn't want others controlling the nature of the forums then he should have paid more attention to them himself over the last decade. The warning signs have been there for a long time.
