I think Chuck knew that the second cancel culture came for anyone in the anime industry, the knives would come out. I understand that Chuck rubbed people the wrong way. I just want to hold judgement back til we get an autopsy of this whole debacle. I can see Chuck getting pressured to play nice. We don't know everything that is going on or what people's thought processes are.

IMHO, the Dashcon metaphor is a bit overused. Especially here.

The problem with that comparison is that Dashcon was funny, in part, because people actually went and expected a decent con. It was an unknown quantity right up until the point the doors opened.

People get the wrong impression of that con from the ballpit pic. Internet Historian's video is a comprehensive look at how much of a disaster it really was. Crowding attendees into a ballroom and telling them they have to foot the bill for the venue is an indelible con memory.

Nobody expects anything from Shane's con except clinical depression, broken dreams, and tears. Maybe an incident of actual sexual assault or two. Certainly not a fun time.

I am reminded of Jim's tweets so long ago when Nick had Shane on. One of them included a quip about a con in Shane's basement with chicken tendies (along with "How can an ass do that to a chair?!").
