Epic Games General Thread - Its time to talk about what the AAA gaming industry does not understand about the PC console.

So is Human Resource Machine... sort of. Tomorrow corporation is more the graphics design side, but not the game design side of the World of Goo equation.
I don’t care! It’s still fucking brilliant! Kyle Gabler is a fucking genius!

I bought from epic store resources for unreal engine then made a game where you shoot skeletons with minigun.
But did it have enough bloom and particle smoke? It’s in unreal, so it needs to have all the effects on all the time!

got the second free game (FTL)
no second 10 dollar coupon, darn
i was hoping ot get 120 bucks worth of free games in the end

I mean, I cannot really fault them on this one. If im not mistaken, Platinum has been kinda struggling even with Nier Automata and Astral Chain specially since the later is just for the Nintendo Switch.
So their solution to exclusivity giving them the shaft financially is to accept Chinese blood money and engage in a partnership with an even higher potential for future exclusivity?

And Platinum wonders why they're struggling.

Well, Im honestly gonna ask what their options are. While, okay I agree taking cash from Tencent isnt also a wise move as they may get stuck with being part of Epics catalogue, it doesnt seem like theyre getting publishers knocking on their door 24/7. An if Nintendo was their BEST option when it came to Astral Chain, then I dont even wanna know how fucked they are.

Because, and I say this as someone who absolutely adores Platinum's games, they can barely play nice with anybody and for some reason cannot focus on creating and/or maintaining mainstream heavy hitters to save their life.

It's a double-edged sword; on the one hand, they can create really good less-heavily marketed AA games based on brand-new IPs that can bring new experiences to anyone who plays them, but on the other hand, a lot of them are new IPs and none of them can really get a foothold in the public consciousness (with the one exception being Bayonetta, but it also had the caveat of being a high-quality game on the fucking Wii U, a console that pretty much nobody bought anyways) because they cannot establish a brand with nearly any of them.

Every single large game that they're known for (Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, NieR: Automata, Bayonetta, et. al) was off the backs of giants, or through partnerships with other companies. When left to their own devices, we get games like The Wonderful 101, Infinite Space, MadWorld, Vanquish, Anarchy Reigns and so on, all good/middling games in their own rights, but none of them really branched out of their niches or are known outside of the "gaming sphere" no matter how hard they tried; niche games are not enough to keep a video game company of their size afloat. And as of recently with the colossal fuckup of mismanagement and resource allocating that was Scalebound (Inaba's words, not mine) wherein they just sorta gave up on the game after they couldn't make something worth Microsoft's continued investment, Star Fox Zero being a flop, their weird blase attitude towards NieR: Automata (albeit part of that's also due to the creator's vision for the series not allowing for a direct continuation), Astral Chain not being the heavy-hitter Nintendo wanted it to be, and them repeating the whole "it's still coming, it's still totally coming" bit from Scalebound's development with Bayonetta 3: yeah, it's no wonder why they're struggling and can barely maintain connections in the industry.

They could try to counteract this by continuing franchises that people want, or at the very least by building up their current lineup of IPs, but they just...don't (again, save for Bayonetta, but even then...) in service of creating something new and in order to remain self-published. Which again, I commend them for in an industry full of sequelized/rebooted garbage, but going hog wild with two completely new non-established IPs after they just started self-publishing and currently have no recent buffer of success from one of their previous games is a massively stupid idea. Which leads us to where we are now, wherein they need to accept blood money in order to survive and keep the company alive. I understand it's because they didn't have many options left, but it's not exactly like they didn't put themselves or in some cases, were kinda forced into this situation due to publisher fuckery in this situation to begin with.

(I also may have gotten a lot of details wrong as this is just my admittedly surface-level view of thesituation, so if anyone wants to correct me on Platinum's history in the industry/clarify who was at fault where to get them to this point, please feel free to jump in.)

So, apparently Galenkin (the guy behind steamspy) put out saying how in 2019 steam didnt get many new games, thus seems he wants to imply this is a sign of Epic kicking steams ass and becomin actual competition

What the fuck? How many games did Epic get in comparison? And no games that were their at launch don't count.
