Overwatch

Nintendo ate tons of shit for unclear marketing (via the Wii vs. the Wii U, the 3DS and the "new" 3DS, etc) until they learned their lesson and cleaned up their messaging through marketing.
hardware sells differently, and even with the shit they got plenty of nintendies bought it anyway.

They really need to reexamine how much "social capitol" they've got, because they're acting like they have tons when they have next to none - and this OW2 announcement shows it.

nah, they still got plenty of that. take literally everyone at blizzcon (no one is paying 400+ dollars and isn't gonna buy their game), but more importantly the huge normie crowd that doesn't follow news or what happens at blizzcon. they see a sequel for a game they and their normie friends played and gonna pick up the deluxe for 80 bucks at launch.

The only problem they're going to encounter is that they're going to have to release the "Overwatch 2" stuff on consoles as DLC, meaning that you'll need a physical disc to play it on consoles (not switch) if you've got Overwatch 1 physically, which most people do.

if you bought digital it's a dlc, if you the bought disc be prepared to swap.

It has to be money to be honest. It's the same engine which can be updated and released for those already playing the game I'd imagine they could just shut down OW for a while to update the engine then bring the game back up

no need to shut it down, they can just release it in an update. they wouldn't even need to touch the servers if protocols stay the same.

I disagree, Blizzard is really in a bad place right now and they aren't doing themselves any favors.

Presumably people at Blizzcon will buy it, great, those are almost all going to be upgrades though. They probably already have OW1. They're also a very small demographic of purchasers and likely aren't a major part of the marketing strategy.

The main people they should target fall into two groups.
a) People who played overwatch 1 but don't any longer.
b) People who never have played Overwatch 1 but could get into it.

Group A is already a losing battle, because whatever drove people away from Overwatch 1 is being marketed as a feature in Overwatch 2, unless your complaint was "the story is paper thin" or "there's no single player content". The balance, the stress, the lack of fun, and the community (things I would suggest really hurt Overwatch 1) are all still going to be in OW2. There's not much of a reason to come back, unless you like paper-thin Player vs Computer content. Or if you really think the game with a hamster in a hamster ball and a giant talking gorilla is going to have a really good story. Additionally, if you think that a "really good story" could be written by Blizzard Entertainment in the last ~20 years.

Group B is an uphill battle, just because of how poor thier games have done lately. Chances are, if you're in the demographic for Overwatch, you've probably tried one of thier recent games and been disappointed (Diablo 3, Starcraft 2, WoW:BFA, HOTS, Hearthstone) - meaning you'd be skeptical of Overwatch 2.

I'm sure it will do fine, but it's just going to be another confusing and mediocre Blizzard game in what is now, very sadly, a long string of those.

Is there a reliable source to know what are the actual player numbers in Overwatch? There is a lot of speculation as to whether or not player numbers are dwindling but are there any sources for raw data? This is another thing that pisses me off about Blizzard: their obscurantism when it comes to releasing such information. I really wish they had an equivalent to Steam charts to ascertain the player population in their games.

they are, but you underestimate the vast amount of stupid consumers.
little anecdote that doesn't mean much, but still: mate of mine is the kind of guy giving you shit for buying EA or ubisoft games (while never playing any of them, but he "heard" they were bad, because that's what everybody else says, right?) still bought overwatch, still put triple digit hours in it and when asked how he could play that drek he will just say "it wasn't that bad". but if you'd call him a pleb he would get somewhat angry.

outside of that, when you look around, no one is outright hating the game and they stopped playing for some reason or another without ever having any ill feelings about it. sure, they will say "the community was toxic" (whatever the fuck that means anyway), maybe "the gameplay could've been better" and other stuff, but they never outright cared about any of that anyway. they played OW because it was popular, their friends played it, as shit as it is there are worse ways to waste your time, and when something else became popular either they or their friends moved on.

fact is people are retarded, blizz made billions with OW alone, and they will do so for some time because those people exist. same way there are people that bought fallout 76 after 4, and will continue to pay for the sub.

the only difference between blizzard and other companies is that blizzard still thinks they are somewhat special and have a magical talent - and there are plenty that fan their farts back at them, see blizzcon. that's why we can make fun of them, but the average normie simply doesn't care enough.

Gotta agree with you here the stereotype of the average consumer is either dumb or ignorant. Companies are now more outward with how scummy their practices are and still people will ignore all of that just because they like the new shiny thing being jingled in their faces.

I kept noticing that part of the worthless apology after the Hong Kong thing was how diverse and inclusive they are and how they strive to "bring the world together" basically generic damage control on top of "I'm sorry" but you are right and it's not just Blizzard. The average casual doesn't watch E3 or has anything intricate to talk about when playing their video games it's just a generic piece of entertainment for them.

D.va’s new skin is a schoolgirl outfit and therefore sexist.
Don't forget people similarly complained about another D.Va skin because of "police brutality."

Having just got the game on Wednesday for geighstation a few days ago I'm not exactly satisfied with how long matchmaking takes. It is several years old though so I guess that's to be expected.

Okay, so the issue is her wearing a dress in general.

Meanwhile her being an eighteen year old girl wearing a skin tight outfit by default is considered empowering.

I know that’s technically legal, but that’s still sending a lot of mixed messages.

EDIT: Sorry nineteen.

It really shows how little is going in people’s lives when they bitch about a girl wearing a skirt.

It is fucking Cucktaku, of course they are going to have a problem with it, it is all clickbaity outrage bullshit in that website.

I wouldn't know a thing about player numbers in console but I imagine it is even lower than those on PC. When I quit playing OW back around summer of last year, match wait times would easily take around 2 min. As for its age being a reason, in theory, that shouldn't be an issue but since Blizzard is so slow at updating and adding content worth a damn, a lot of players simply fucked off elsewhere. In my case it didn't help that the last two heroes were nothing worth getting excited about. Low key this game's entire purpose of existing is to provide assets for SFM animators.
