Reddit’s shadowban system is an automated anti-spam mechanism that makes reddit accounts invisible if they are deemed too spammy.
Moderators can still see them (to some extent) and sometimes reach out to shadowbanned but seemingly non-spammy users telling them to contact Reddit admins to have that shadowban lifted.
In the early years of Reddit shadowban was the only kind of system wide ban Reddit could enact on rule breaking users. This no longer happens. Nowadays there is an above the board suspension system that will tell rule breaking users they are no longer welcome.
