Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Things seems to be accelerating quickly. Normally mainlanders aren't that quick in quarantining entire cities, much less four (at this point).

Chinese woman that apparently ate a shitton of antipyretics, while having symptoms of the coronavirus, to evade the ban is bragging about being in Paris on social media.

Hey, responsible Chinks, somebody, take her rights away. Regardless of whether she's trolling or being honest, she's fucking subhuman.

Over/under on a modern Decameron coming out of China? Who am I kidding the CPC doesn't allow fun.

I love how people are freaking out about this when actually all the fatalities have occurred in elderly people with pre-existing medical complications. It's no deadlier than the flu. At this stage the worst it's going to do is kill Barb!

Which is why this thing has hit at pretty much the worst time possible. A lot of the elderly still live in more rural areas in China, which also happen to have shit hospitals and a love for """traditional""" medicine. If this stuff happened during the summer it might not be that bad, but now you have tons of urbanites going back home to see their family. Even if this only kills a few percent of old people who get infected, the causality figure could end up breaking 100k. I don't think this will be that high but it looking much worse than sars.

I'm getting a sudden urge to play Plague Inc. again.

Chinese expansion pack/mod fucking where?

Why are they so adamant on spreading the virus? Lunar holidays and coincidental timing aside, they seem way too happy about this at the thought of spreading it. Its creepy.

It's not that they are happy at the idea of spreading it. They just literally don't believe in powers beyond their little pond. It's why you have people eating bats when even a cursory look on the most censored search engine will tell you how that's a horrible idea. Then again, I doubt many have even have effective means of communication to tell them that (my parents visited the portion of our family tree that were still Chinese peasants a year or so back. In all 20+ years of my life I never knew they even existed). As a result, you've got an entire country's worth of people who think like teenagers in terms of their own mortality. "So what if I have a fever?" an infectee may say, "I've been sick and recovered before, I don't see why this one will kill me." Much less the fact they are gambling with their lives, they don't even consider for a second that their fever can be easily passed on to somebody's grandmother, making them directly responsible when her weak immune system cannot fight off the virus and she ends up in a casket. And it's going to be a loooooot of grandmas, considering how jam-packed most forms of transportation can be.

Not that they would care, because it isn't their grandmother.

Speaking of family members, this little bit is pretty emblematic of why you have infected people from Wuhan so intent on getting out of Dodge when literally everyone in the world is telling them to stay the fuck put:
'I really don't want to visit my relatives cause I'm living in Hubei(the province that includes Wuhan). I asked my parents not to pay a visit, and they told me"Your relatives treat you well since you were born. Why wouldn't you care about them? Why would you think paying a visit would be bad?"'
That is fucking classic Asian Guilt-Tripping 101. Family takes priority above all else, and for an insular population that has lived in the mainland for all their lives, family is the only world they have ever known. Doesn't matter if they are assholes or merely taking advantage of your kindness, because you owe them for your existence. To refuse your elders, no matter how good of a reason you have for doing so, is akin to pulling teeth. Many of these infectees don't believe they have the choice to say no. Combined with how little they think of the epidemic...

I just realized that we have three cities quarantined and New Years celebrations cancelled in the capital in the span of less than 24 hours.
Part of me wants this to be an overreaction, I shudder to think it's so bad the authorities feel they have to close down three cities.

Researchers are saying it's impossible for the virus to have spread to other provinces like it has unless there are thousands more cases than shown in official stats, hence the high estimates we are getting from various sources, CCP obviously have never learned from SARS.

I think I understand why so many fuckers tried to run aboard to spread the disease intentionally.
Talking to my father, who is a old Chinese man, about this plague, he mentioned that 'if you spread the disease to other people, you will be less sick', and this is a 'old Chinese thinking'. I guess this is one of the reason why those 50s Chinese running across the country even though they are having fever. They think if they spread the disease to enough people, they would somehow magically be cured of the disease.

Fascinating to think that the equivalence to the population of Florida cannot move around their country.

Typhoid Mary did everything she could to avoid detection as her role of supervector. Now imagine a country where it's okay to think like Typhoid Mary.

Its crazy watching this shit spread. China's seeming inability to maintain an effective quarantine hopefully leads to a pandemic situation because that would be the most amusing to me.

If you unironically root for a pandemic, you're no better than those, who try to evade quarantine and then brag about it.

So my takeaway so far today
  • It's worse than China is saying
  • A lot worse
  • China might be panicking
  • It's already at a 3% kill rate, and rising -- and that's just what China is letting us know about
  • It's global
  • 14 hospital workers got infected despite following quarantine procedures
  • China let a bunch of "important" people out of Wuhan before officially quarantining it
  • The one guy in Taiwan who has it had 70 pounds of liquid pumped out of his lungs
  • The guy in Seattle waited half a week before seeing a doctor
  • Madagascar has not closed their borders yet
  • China is somehow more arrogant than America AND infinitely less competent
  • Wuhan just happens to have a research facility that studies pathogens
Was the conspiracy stuff that 4chan was saying vetted true? That China was seemingly intentionally increasing flights out of the area?

This is pretty crazy if true. Hospitals in Wuhan are requesting medical supplies from the public.

Also the forbidden city is closing down.

The absolutely biggest thing is that it doesn't trigger fever with some patients. That means two things:

  1. The immune system doesn't fight it in some cases (at least effectively).
  2. It's harder to detect infected people.
