Remember in statistical models no one ever uses the confirmed cases as the actual figure - ever. China knows it is higher and so does everyone else, but getting kits into every home isn't going to happen. Its like when the Ebola virus went a little wild - telling people they will be locked up isn't going to get them to self report.

Everyone in authority - China included - is using a figure closer to 100,000.

That said, I’m certain corners are being cut. The scary thing about civil and structural engineering is how easy it is to take shortcuts and make mistakes without it being initially apparent. There’s a famous case study of a 13 story Chinese (what a coincidence!) apartment building that literally fell on it’s side because they undercut the foundation on one side and stacked the fill soil on the other.

They didn't even undercut the foundation. They dug next to it to create the foundation for the parking garage. The galaxy brain move was stockpiling the spoils on the other side of the foundation, creating a massive shear load. This caused the piles to shear off around the same level as the bottom of the parking garage.

Got back from a run to get a P100. Home Depot in my area was still fully stocked , but that's probably because we haven't had any reported cases yet. I'd suggest anyone in similar areas go and do the same sooner rather than later.

My Local HD hasn't had any since at least Friday. I have a couple full face P100 respirators because I thought a Stalker getup for Halloween was a good idea. I was sure I'd use them for stuff afterward, but they are overkill for most semi-industrial hazards. Definitely need to get some new filters. On the otherhand, I don't really want to wear those until freaking people out is way down the list of concerns though.

The issue is the itinerant and wealthy Mainland Chinese foreign student population in my view, who move back and forth between here and China between uni terms and are the most likely to bring the Kung Flu back from the trips home for New Year or whatever than the settled ones, many of whom are actually descended from Hong Kongers, not PRC. Oh, and the tourists and 'escapees' (the cunts) who fled in the last week or so against quarantine. The main risk here will be to people in universities surrounded by mainlanders students or who deal with mainlanders in some close fashion elsewhere. Probably the first infection here will end up being a health worker who had to deal with a squalling Mainlander who thought they were clever for jumping the border and flying to Europe to console themselves with Gucci and Louis Vuitton.

I doubt this disease is worse than earlier similar outbreaks, China has these every decade or so, but this is the first with a massive number of Chinese citizens online, and from what I've seen chinese web users have gone full /happening/ mode

It's when healthy adults outside of china starts dropping that one should worry, until then this is the Chinese government desperately trying to both cover up their own piss poor health sector, and stop their citizens from going full lord of the flies. They already have fire bombers and people armed with glaives threatening anyone who as much as coughs, it won't take much until they start lynching strangers on sight

I live in a state that still hasn't had any cases turn up. My local Lowe's, Home Depot, and Ace were all stocked with P100s and had tons of N95s so if you're on the fence and in a state that hasn't gotten hit yet, it's worth a look.
