Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

There is 3 types of people when things like this pop up.

1. Don't worry it's nothing, trust the officials. I'll bet you $20 dollars to lick this bus pole and prove to you I won't get sick. Doesn't worry about washing hands after spending all day in Chinatown. Orders extra Chinese food out of spite.

2. I'm not in a panic but I'm concerned and up to date on the current news, I take reasonable caution and stock up on basic supplies that may sell out if things get worse while trying to avoid crowds and unnecessary trips out to stores.

3. Its Doomsday end of times, mortgages house to build bunker with 6 month supply of food and water, his family think he's crazy and usually talks a lot about conspiracy theories to co-workers.

WHY ARE BOOMERS SO HAPPY ABOUT THIS

I've heard more than one genuine boomer say shit like 'we need a new plague' and 'we should all be beige' and 'there should be no gender'. One said this plague will make way for evolution to that point. They're fucking crazy.
I'm with them, but only because it's primarily going to kill boomers. All of the bug catchers, vegans, antivaxers and other immunocompromised folks Corona Chan blesses are just not-unwelcome collateral damage.

It's a horrible thing to say, but from a pragmatic point of view a virus that primarily targets the elderly will likely be an economic boost for all countries. In the long term. The resources are strained caring for elderly, who absorb vast amounts of public funding, family time and the young to care for them.

Japan is a great example where the services required to care for the elderly drain away from services for the young and the economy. The USA is the same.

If you "wanted" a virus, one that targets 95% of the time the frail and the elderly wouldn't destroy your economy, it might strengthen it in the long term.

Sadly, the GOP would lose a lot of voters. But there you go! Upside - most of Senate and Florida gone, and honestly, no big crying shame there.

I've been perusing the thread every day, laughing at the memes and taking in the advice of the preppers, but taking no action. "I live in bumfuck nowhere," I thought. "The only Chinese guy at my college has all his family here in the US. Corona-chan can't get me!" Then I woke up this morning, and my nose was a little runny, and I could feel the phlegm in the back of my throat. Now I'm clearing my throat every few seconds like our favorite producer of kwality kahntent. Oh, God no.
It is only now, at the end, that I see how wrong I was. Goodbye, Kiwis. :semperfidelis:

I don't think you got all the information. Long-term effects are yet to be determined, but liver damage and heart damage have been noted.
So, before you start 'voting with your virus', understand that no one exits exposure unharmed.
With the lack of exercise the current generations get, a little heart damage could kill off the next 2 generations.
Begging for a pandemic is dumb.

wow it's almost like those treatable illnesses are shit like heart disease and diabetes and not an airborne virus that easily shuts down entire airports and kills people with golden perfect health or something

Please say sike. Please.
"transmitted by touch." lol what bullshit. yeah, if you touch something then touch your mouth, sure. just like other respiratory diseases. if they're suggesting it crawls in through your skin pores then it shows how backwards the information coming from china is and why the CDC is having to take time and draw its own conclusions.
I'm probably being autistic but...
...What if this corona virus thing turns out to be a nothingburger? Wouldn't that
make 80% of this thread look like a bunch of pussy faggots?
pandemic is a real threat, but right now there's this alarmist panic that's latching onto anything presented as worst case scenario, even when more informed authorities are contradicting it.
edit- current CDC press conference again reiterated, asymptomatic transmission were isolated reports that they don't have proof for.

This whole fucking article is propaganda.

I was following the RCMP investigation before this all started. The sample sent to Wuhan we being sent out of Canada in a sock. There's no way the researchers were legit, they were looking to score some money for delivering a great weapon to the CCP.

Can you tell me more about this? Links?

Look on the bright side for China. They finally have something "Made in China" that lasts.

From the CDC stream, 5 cases in the US, no known cases of transference yet but it takes 2 weeks to show so that seems like bullshit

EDIT: CDC man says Americans don't need to buy masks when asked about Americans going out and acquiring them, panic would be bad and all but not sure if that's to be believed or not

Another edit: It seems they are checking for symptoms (at airports), not quarantining people (at least openly) we'll see though. Those who have been identified sought a doctor individually.

hey how about everyone just takes care of themselves and is thus forced to budget, to reign in the consooming, and to make smarter decisions in general? (With private charity to help the fuck-ups/unfortunate.)

Every time "we" need to crowdfund public safety net options, it always comes with the caveat that everyone else gets to tell me what care I can get and when. That doesn't sound great to me.

I think it is ok to be at least cautious. I never have seen this before.
World perspective:
The Chinese response to '1400' people was a complete lie. You don't try to build 2 hospitals in 2 weeks for 1400 people.
50 million+ people on military enforced quarantine is kinda crazy.
The tanks in the street and the sobbing doctors/nurse footage is disturbing as well.
USA:
In the USA? nah. just don't hang out in metro hospitals where Chinese nationals are. Don't go to China either.
The US should ban all travel from/to China just to be safe, imo.

Gotta keep the global economy rolling no matter what. This is what a debt based economy does, you need constant growth to offset interest.

US State Department just made the entire province that Wuhan is in a level 4 advisory. I’m honestly surprised it took them that long.

I mean, their relationship with China was already rocky without the virus, I'm willing to bet you the reason it took this long was trying to find a way to deal with it without China (or the critics against travel bans) acting like a spoiled brat.

Canada and Mexico need to do this as well, it needs to be a coordinated effort.
Hell, why not have every country ban travel from China. That way they can kill off their own cases of the virus while China kills itself off completely.

I love how every country when it comes to flights in and out of China are choosing to go with the "Trust System" The Chinese have a knack for playing stupid to avoid inconveniences. Many of them just want to get back to their family and back to work not get quarantined for a week or two this alone is reason enough for a percentage of them to lie. Then the CDC basically all but admits it's confirmed transmissible during the asymptomatic incubation period so they are just letting many carriers of the virus back into society with no real checks or balances. Maybe they already know its gone out of control and want to keep business going for as long as possible before they are forced to do something due to public outcry.
