Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

That sounds a lot like the first wave of the Spanish Flu.

It swept through and wasn't that bad. The second wave, a slightly mutated version, did the damage.

Pandemics have been part of the human experience since we walked upright. The real drama here is the idea that we may have conquered a plague before it started. People have made that claim before, it's dangerous to think that way.
You're read right. And we have 2 hemispheres that like to play tennis with one another with viruses over the seasons. Still waiting for the CDC and WHO to come to some sort of conclusion about this incubation period stuff because really, if you cant see it, we cant really prevent it.
So looks like the 2019-nCoV coronavirus is contagious before symptoms show after all. 😟
Also @Menotaur, do you happen to have on you a link/archive of the Bloomberg article you're talking about in your latest post?

I'm unaccustomed to posting links, hope this works. The link is above.

I'll believe the "it's contagious when totally asymptomatic" thing when multiple health agencies from 1st world countries keep reporting it once the hype period dies down. More likely if there's an element of truth to it at all, it's contagious with minor symptoms that most people don't think is a deadly virus. Because coronavirus mostly just causes mild to severe colds that pass without incident. Your runny nose could be allergies. Could also be coronavirus. Either way you're probably not going to a doctor if that's all you've got.

Nah, it's just a culmination of my general feelings RE: China and human rights, the general well-being of their citizenry, and the massive hate-boner they have for our current administration slapping tarriffs on their asses for the last three years.

True, but Trump is old, fat, and probably has lungs that couldn't handle a mild jog. He travels the country and packs thousands of seats a night. I haven't heard any of those rallies screening people on entry yet.
At his age the fact he's overweight is actually a good sign. Or at least, better than if he was visibly wasting. Plus DC gets magic doctors. Look at Ginsberg's barely animate but still moving corpse.

Almost certainly late but WHO press conference is starting now on Coronavirus.
Edit: OK Not sure when this will start another live channel is saying 11. Fuckin RT.
Here is a CBC stream saying it will start at 11 in case RT is too retarded. Jeez what a choice.

Interesting article on Bloomberg today regarding the issue of the incubation period and the 10 year old boy who was infectious during the incubation period. It is vague on the details but seems to imply that perhaps rather than not showing symptoms, that for healthy infants and perhaps adults that the symptoms are so mild they are undetectable except through exceptional diagnostic means such as swabbing.

It would imply we likely have tens of thousands of cases, but that most are having such mild symptoms that they are not being tested.

It also may indicate the virus is gaining strength to infect; but perhaps is also mutating to be less severe, thus the mortality rate at this time may be as low as 0.5%. Right now mortality rate percentages are based on known cases but it would seem that only 1 in 5 cases are likely known about, thus fatalities are always known because they leave bodies.

I'd suggest that we likely are going to see a mortality rate ending up (assuming no serious mutations), of around 0.5% - 1.5%. But a probable spread to millions.

But until the infectious nature of the incubation period is really understood to be true or not, I'd suggest that we likely we will not see a global pandemic - perhaps a technical one, but unlikely to be global.

But if we do, in a weird twist, it will be the children that will become the super-spreaders and grandpa and grandma will pay the price.

That makes sense, but will probably be ignored by all the doomers.

The doomers are retarded circle jerkers but it's good they exist and that institutions are taking this seriously. This is not the Big One, I'm pretty sure. But in the first few days this is what the Big One would look like. Doesn't hurt to be cautious.

Well ok actually it does measurably hurt the economy and damage peoples lives but it's not as bad as Captain Tripps would be on the cost vs. benefit anaylsis.

not sure if this has been asked but what about pets? are they at risk of getting infected and spreading the infection? if it did spread from a bat is it able to also spread to other animals?
Possible but unlikely.

While this virus seems to have emerged from an animal source, it is now spreading from person-to-person. CDC recommends that people traveling to China avoid animals both live and dead, but there is no reason to think that any animals or pets in the United States might be a source of infection with this new coronavirus.

Don't think I've ever had a more Alex Jones thought than this, so its most definitely bullshit, but what if:

Chinese govt manufactured the virus knowing it would spread across borders, with a large chance of infecting Americans, and specifically since it's an election year, they want it to infect Trump. They hate his fucking guts for forcing them to the table on even a mostly-meaningless Phase One deal, and they'll gladly murder as many of their own people as possible to get one of them at his rallies. Or the Superbowl, Or voting booths in major cities.

Get out of my head, Jones.
Yeah, major cities like LA and NYC, big Republican strongholds there.

I agree with you that China doesn’t care about its own people, but they do care about their economy, and this is going to have a huge short term (or possibly even long term) impact on it. If it was intentional they implemented it terribly, which granted is classic China behavior.

News from Finland. A Chinese tourist on quarantine in lapland over corona suspicions

Edit: sauce

For non-fins
UPDATE:
Confirmed Corona case. First in Finland

Edit: Possibly 15 more

Patient treated at the Lapland Central Hospital has coronavirus.
A Chinese tourist from Wuhan, China, has been found to have a coronavirus in Finland. He is currently isolated in the Central Hospital of Lapland.
A youngish tourist applied for an emergency at Ivalo, where he was transferred to the Central Hospital of Lapland. This is the first confirmed case in Finland.

- It was to be expected that the disease brought by tourists with them could also become apparent in Finland. The risk of spreading the disease in Finland is still very low, so don't worry, says Director Mika Salminen in a press release from THL.

The Lapland Hospital District and local health authorities will continue to provide treatment with THL. Approximately 15 people potentially affected by the infection. The health care district monitors the health of those affected for 14 days.

- Finland has prepared for possible cases. Operating models exist in healthcare and laboratories. Hospitals have the opportunity to research and treat coronavirus infections under isolation conditions, says Salminen.

That's an easy one.

"It's Trump's fault that the cities became breeding grounds of disease! Just like the border crisis, the homeless, and the opioid crises!"
"White doctors don't care about black people!" (NPR ran a segment on racism causing premature births in minorities yesterday, it was magical)
"Trump colluded with China to spread the virus!"

The spin writes itself.

So, they are started to barricade people from Wuhan or contagious. I dont speak Chinese, but this twitter account has first hand documentation of what's happening in China

Lemme give a rough view on the first few tweets:

This one is basically slamming the Red Cross for lining their own pockets by selling the veggies the Shandong farmers donated in the supermarkets.

This one is about a chink wife snitching to her Weibo friends and the police about her husband's high fever. After investigations, it turned out to be a nothingburger leading to the wife getting arrested for 3 days under the charge of creating fake news and reports.

This one is about the hospital being so over capacity that they can't even take in patients in critical condition while the doctors are suffering mad burnout. The guy's cursing and swearing at the poor receptionist in some Wuhan dialect.

This one as per the picture is on the CCP hoarding the N95's for themselves and their cronies while the first responders get diddly shit.

sorry I can't archive this, am on my Chinese new year break w family atm. Will translate more if I have the time.

So I don't know how accurate these were but I've seen a couple of people being lynched for supposedly having the virus or just for being from wuhan. I don't know much about China internally, will this have a larger effect on Chinese stability/unity do you think?

Edit: A little levity from the twitter @Synesthesia posted earlier

An excellent question. After some googling, the answer is no.

Quite often we will find that viruses that can be carried by animals don't necessarily cause these animals to be sick. They might just act as hosts, allowing the virus itself to live on and spread for an indefinite amount of time.

Diseases that can be transmitted from animals to human (and vice versa) are termed "zoonotic".

While there is a strand of Coronavirus that affects dogs, this strand is non transmittable to humans. (Source: https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/coronavirus-disease-in-dogs )

thanks, i've got a golden retriever at home and this is honestly a weight of my chest

Well, i don't know what to make of that, but he was merely agreeing with another doctor from Hong Kong who said that the number of infected will double every 6 days and then 1,000,000,000 infected will be achieved by May.
OH LOOK I PASSED INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA OH LOOK I USE EXPONENTIAL FUNCTIONS TO MODEL EVERYTHING OH LOOK FUCK ADJUSTING FOR REALITY WHEN I DO MATH

That's...incredibly dumb. How many days before the number of infected surpasses the entire human population in this "model"?
