Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

28 days ago, I spent 6 hours on layover in Beijing

Even though I've been at work since then, I've been sent home and told I'm not allowed to come back until I get proof I'm negative for the virus

Meanwhile in November, my work had an outbreak of both pertussis and pneumonia and yet they did nothing but penalize people who took time off and gypped them on short term.

Edit: oh I forgot that several people had Norwalk at the same time

Makes sense

A tourist from China has just been to Pula General Hospital for check-ups after complaining of respiratory problems, hospital director Irena Hrstic confirmed for Glas Istre.

While this is true, it's completely bogus to say "Ebola can be spread by aerosol!!! No, I meant a different strain that is of no current concern and not the one wrecking Africa teehee" because that isn't the topic of concern.
Claiming 1 billion infections by May is either idiotic or malicious fearmongering, because someone wants to sell something.
Oh absolutely. It’s a theoretical. Interesting but not happening outside of that specific setup. I’m just a pedant. Probably one reason I like this place :)
In the one billion number. Spanish flu is thought to have infected a third of the planet. It’s not beyond the bounds of belief that a virus could do similar now, but yes, his maths is rather idealised and simply pulling out the line on the exponential curve is not how things work at all. It probably wouldn’t work like that in a Petri dish, never mind in a human society capable of quarantine and with medicine.

I was informed today that one of our coworkers in China just had his holiday extended today. He is not working or living anywhere near Wuhan. Normally, in China they work people to death so if the corporate shitlords that put profit over everything else is happy to pay this guy to sit on his ass at home, it makes me extremely nervous about the severity of this virus.

I hope so but I found it worrying how many times the WHO people kept repeating that China is telling us everything they know and cooperating fully.

I think the truth is somewhere in the middle. China is seemingly being more open than usual For them. Which instead of impressing the WHO folks, should be worrying them. Especially given how clear it is that China is still shoveling great walls worth of Bullshit.

You're going to get the best medical info on pol.

Not kidding, financial analysts are using it as a primary source for info on the virus itself.
Source?
Don't think I've ever had a more Alex Jones thought than this, so its most definitely bullshit, but what if:

Chinese govt manufactured the virus knowing it would spread across borders, with a large chance of infecting Americans, and specifically since it's an election year, they want it to infect Trump. They hate his fucking guts for forcing them to the table on even a mostly-meaningless Phase One deal, and they'll gladly murder as many of their own people as possible to get one of them at his rallies. Or the Superbowl, Or voting booths in major cities.

Get out of my head, Jones.
This is a risky gamble even discounting the disruption of one's own society. Xenophobia and the prevalence of foreign diseases are highly correlated, so the Democrat's "muh racism" playbook will be weakened if Corona-chan strikes in the election year. Coronavirus would actually help Trump unless it's deadly enough to cull the rural boomers in significant numbers.

This one actually worries me more than swineflu and aviationflu did. Not completely sure why, but does not china seem more worried this time? Cant really remember my thoughts on the last scares cuz i smoke so much weed all the time and everything is hazy in my head. For you guys who followed swine and aviation flu progress in early state...is china taking it more serious now you think? I got gasmask and shit at home but no food, im bunkering up on Heinz baked beans tomorrow. I think maybe large farts can kill off lots of airborne viruses?

I watched the mayor of Toronto's po-faced, v irtue signalling presser on racism & all that rot. He rambled on & on & on...

When it came to question time, a member of the press asked if he or the police chief could point to 1, just ONE racist incident that had occurred in Toronto because of the new virus.

Talk about a deer in headlights look in response. I spent the next 15 minutes carefully cleaning fruit punch off my damned keyboard.

Swine flu was 2009 (?) so there wasn’t the massive saturation of online/social media then. SARS was 2002.
this is the first one of these that’s playing out in full view of social media. The last big one before that was what...the 67-68 flu? Back then it was a sober item on the news once a day, and a daily newspaper. Different world.

As other posters pointed out in the thread, this is the first time a huge outbreak happened where chinese citizens are sharing things on social media. The CCP was cagey when the other outbreaks happened, so who knows. It does seem to be that theres more panic, from the government on this, but I'm a fetus so who knows.

Edit: ninjaed by doc otterly

Just like flu. It’s possible, as other have noted above, that they just had very mild symptoms. Kids especially are not reliable reporters. I remember mine at that age never mentioning they felt ill until they actually fell over..
oh yes, the nice knock on effect of people pumping themselves full of unnecessary antibiotics and fuelling resistance to whatever bacteria they’re brewing too...

It’s possible, under specific circumstances. If I remember rightly some work was done with the Reston strain that hit the USA and they managed to get droplet transmission in monkeys. As far as I recall it wasn’t that applicable to the real world because they had to set it up just so, but it was proof of principle.

The way I understood it, he was talking about the one that everyone was worried about at the time. Or, at least, gave this impression.
