People died because of the disruption resulting from the evacuations and separation of families. Nobody died from radiation. Yours is the logic of Extinction Rebellion - panic now because over-reaction is safer, disregarding the costs of that over-reaction.

No one's going to die because they had an extra week's worth of food and some water saved up in the pantry. Worst case scenario, that N95 mask becomes useful later on when you redo your favorite coffee table or something. Knowing the symptoms and what to do in case of illness during a possible epidemic spread (read: stay out of the hospitals unless you have to) isn't bad.

Beyond that, until the WuFlu hits your town, I'm not sure you the average person can do much at this point.

The problem this virus presents is that we live in a globalized economy. A big hit to the Chinese economy can crash all other economies including the US. Supply chains are frail, disruptions impact the everyday lives of distant peoples. There is no way to predict Black Swan events like this, the fact this disease even started in China means a lot of people have their hands dirty. If they wanted to run biosafety labs, they should have set them up in Africa because you don't shit where you eat.

The Chinese stock exchanges are closed until Monday, we are going to see what WuFlu has wrought. My bet is a large number of Chinese nationals cash out their stocks and convert the money into precious metals. It will be important to watch the Hong Kong stock exchange, we should see a lot of action there.

Trump announced additional screening in 20 international airports this week after threatening to shut down flights from China. If this shit isn't under control by next week - domestically and in China - flights will be suspended. That's going to cost billions on top of the billions China has already lost. This is the pre-quarantine period in Wuhan, a signal to get out before the borders (possibly) close.

The fact is that they do and in this paradigm it makes perfect sense to ban easy sources of codeine from being sold over the counter - so no it was not "stupid" to ban codeine cough syrup in the reality we live in.
