Oh when it comes to epidemics India is literally the only place in the world that's even worse than china in literally every factor. like, african countries have some huge issues, but at least they tend to be less polluted and have less population density, India though? It was a matter of time before they got wrecked by a virus, if this one gets to them, we'll have images of the result, and they will be haunting.

Very true, it's way to early to start making assumptions about mortality rate based on those numbers. It will certainly sink lower.

The recovery count has been slowly catching up to the death count, and as the Chinese hospitals are reported to be overcrowded it's likely that many recovering victims are not accounted for. Deaths are easier to account for by virtue of them being dead.

It's unlikely that mortality is going to be anywhere near 50% in China at the end of the pandemic. At this time we have only 314 out of 8236 results (about 3.8%).

With the head start that the rest of the world has been given on this, combined with the superior medical care available in first world countries, we should be even better off. There are still few cases of westerners being infected which bodes well for the time being.

Not to mention all of the IT jobs that will be coming back to America. Along with the manufacturing jobs from China, America might be able to make a real economic comeback.

That is, assuming we don't all die too.

From a really cold standpoint, much like how american economy thrived in ww1 and ww2 due to leeching off of europe's disastrous situation, if china and india were to go full pandemic due to this disease, it would probably benefit the west economically, a lot, specially due to all the capital they're currently leeching off of the west precisely due to their high pool of manpower and how cheap they are willing to sell it.

To put it historically, the black plague was in the long run a great thing for europe. I know it sounds awful to say that, but it practically toppled feudalism, because abusing the lower classes became much harder when they weren't replaceable, starting the trend of liberalism that would define napoleonic times. It also toppled catholic academic supremacy, with plague doctors effectively being the first return to empiricism since the rise of this religion, because people were forced to adapt and forget prior dogma if it didn't work. In both cases this took time to have a noticeable effect, but, without the plague, it wouldn't have been possible for hundreds of years later.

The chinese and indian political systems are awful for the same reason feudalism was, because so long as a system has enough manpower to be able to abuse the population, it needs a reason not to. So in a way, this plague could change that. But... you know. This does assume the death of literal millions of people, in horrifying conditions, so I'm fairly sure it's not something most would want, I certainly wouldn't like it. But yeah, for the west, it would be an economic boon so long as they hold their fronteers, and since Merkel won't do that, america would benefit greatly from it.

Well that depends on how they react and wether or not they fall to outside powers. Hardship makes the system adapt, if you're lucky you get a black plague situation, if you aren't you get soviet russia.

A group called Rice and Millet, founded by a former state-media journalist and focused on children with cerebral palsy and other illnesses, posted photos of the boy in a wheelchair and in bed on Wechat.


The group posted a statement on Wednesday saying that Yan’s aunt visited him after his other relatives were taken away but was not able to visit during his final three days because of her own ill health.


Cerebral palsy is a motor disability that can affect movement, posture, muscle tone and speech. The severity of symptoms can vary significantly. Some people only have minor problems, while in extreme cases people may be severely disabled and require round-the-clock care. Yan is reported to have been mostly immobile and had difficulty speaking.


Calls by the Guardian to the Hong’an County government were referred to Huahe town. Phones at the government office there rang unanswered on Thursday.


The new virus has now infected more people in China than were made ill there during the 2002-03 outbreak of Sars, another type of coronavirus.

Government officials from Hong’an County, 60 miles north of the provincial capital, Wuhan, where the outbreak first started, have launched an investigation into the death, said the report, which was picked up by other local media.


The boy, Yan Cheng, was found dead in his bed on Wednesday, six days after his father and his 11-year-old brother were taken from their home and quarantined at a facility 15 miles to the south. Both had developed a fever and were suspected of having the virus. Yan Cheng was left alone at home.
