Maybe this is too optimistic, but I don't think there will ever be another super plague like the Spanish Flu, and certainly not like the Black Death - at least where there is modern medicine and hygiene practices.

The Black Death was in a time when rats freely mingled with people, and the Spanish Flu happened in a time when there was better hygiene and medicine (yet not as good as today) - so they were more lethal.

Don't forget that as hygiene improves the pathogens also evolve. MRSA is just an evolved version of common staph aureus bacteria found on your skin, and can be found in all hospitals worldwide. The amount of top of the line drugs and work involved in treating someone who catches it is enormous and huge amounts of funding, and research is going into finding better ways to treat it. If that or a similar bug managed to get close to plague levels everyone would be fucked simply from not enough products to treat or prevent it.

So, point A is REALLY important. If A doesn't hold true, then we will see a blip on the global economy and perhaps 3-6,000 deaths and a vaccination program.

NYC 1920 is nothing like NYC 2020. If there is a real contagion spreading that will wipe out 1% of the population of NY - (primarily the elderly and the richest), then they will shut it down. If the virus meets the requirement of Point A, the arrival of the virus to NYC is absolutely assured. The world has not had a virus like this in the modern era - again if point A holds true and there is no vaccine. No other scare comes even close.

A loss of 1% of the population of the United States will crush us because the 1% will not be the young, middle aged, it will be the elderly, and they contribute to the GDP more than most. But in addition to the population loss, the overload on medical facilities will destroy the health system of this country and drive the debt to levels beyond comprehension. Again, it is the cascade effect on the economy, and it is a disaster if point A holds true with no vaccine.

Any vaccine is easily a year out & that's being very optimistic. It has to be formulated from several theoretical candidates, then shown to be fairly easily &quickly made. Animal trials, primate trials, small scale human trials, then larger scale as they work out both safety & dosage.

Rushed vaccines can be a nightmare as shown in the 1970s Swine Flu scare.

As maddening as it is, right now, we're all stuck in "wait & see" mode for the most crucial info - incubation period, transmission timing & conditions & if any specific population cohorts are particularly vulnerable other than the expected. Yes - I'm wondering about any specific ethnic groups, sex, age other than very old, very young... we need reliable data from reliable sources.

To be honest I'm not really sure if much of the West has the will left to even attempt a meaningful quarantine, seems to me as though most of the left would rather let it rampage unchecked because muh racisms. It goes without saying that if it gets going anywhere in the Third World, they are all fucked big time. They don't have the capacity to treat a tiny fraction of their population. What happens when the military starts coming to your house, say they think you ought to be in quarantine and has the power to remove you from your home and take you to a sports arena with other "sick" people.

This person had no symptoms. Now what if you were on a plane with someone a week ago who they found out got sick and decide to quarantine you for having been on that flight? We're on some shaky ground here.

This person knew this was what was going to happen when they signed up to get on that plane out of Wuhan. There were more people wanting to leave than tickets available. If this was an issue for them, than they could have not gone. Additionally, I would much rather take a risk of getting the virus somewhere that has tons of trained medical personnel checking on me than coming home and risking infecting people.
