Can't the courts compare his reported income with his federal and state returns? Can do the same for the ridiculous $5k/mo business expenses.

He is such a liar.
Yes, and they will, and one of the documents that has to be generated for the court is something called a creditor matrix which lists all his creditors, their contact information, their counsel, and contact information for their counsel. It's pretty inevitable that people will be contacting those people to inform them of the absolute bullshit DSP is claiming along with video proof.
A prior dayjob client who ran their own business eventually filed for bankruptcy. From what I recall, the client's bankruptcy trustee prepared both the corporate and personal tax return for that tax year. Because the client also ran their own business, they had to submit the most recent (3 months worth maybe?) income statements and balance sheets to give the court some idea about the financial state of business being claimed as the primary source of household income. In some way or another, the court will likely scrutinize DSP's income versus expenses in terms of what was initially reported versus the actual money coming in and out.

Between the creditor matrix and other required paperwork, bankruptcy courts expect as full and honest disclosure as possible. It would be one thing to inadvertently omit $5/year in savings account interest, but claiming to not have a business entity when one has one is going to raise red flags and could result in some uncomfortable scrutiny.

Tells the court he has no business or EIN for the business while also claiming he has business expenses and business income.
While it's possible to have a sole proprietorship without an EIN, it's rare and impractical. Most banks require an EIN in order to open accounts of any sort, and an EIN is required for any business with employees. Still, the fact this person is claiming he has no business entity while simultaneous claiming business income and expenses is going to draw unpleasant attention from the bankruptcy court.

The question is do courts just rubber stamp the majority of bankruptcy applications due to the sheer volume of them, or is each one closely scrutinized?
I imagine there may be some degree of reasonability checking performed. If the answers and numbers supplied look reasonable upon a cursory glance, it's possible the paperwork will be moved forward with little scrutiny. Answers that conflict or seem otherwise unreasonable could easily draw detailed scrutiny to the entire petition.

Yes. It's not a court of general jurisdiction so it can't straight up force you to do anything, but it can kick you out of the sanctuary of bankruptcy back into the cold cruel world of foreclosure and debt collection
From what I recall from Business Law, not being as forthcoming as required on a bankruptcy petition can result in the court deciding to remove the protection that comes with filing the petition -- allowing creditors to resume actions such as foreclosure, repossession, and debt collection activities.

How legitimate is it that he could have all the revenue going through the business while having the business pay for his house, car, phone, internet, streaming services, electricity, water, etc, and he collects the difference as a personal income?
Unfortunately, many people who run their own business pay their personal expenses directly out of their business account which can look bad in a tax examination (audit) or bankruptcy case. In the case of a business ran as a sole proprietorship, the best thing to do is take a monthly draw (i.e. write a check to one's self), deposit it in a personal account, and then pay personal bills from that personal account.

Another thing some business owners do is commingle business and personal funds, which can also cause problems if they cannot be easily separated and identified.

If people here can see that he's obviously committing fraud then I think we can at least be fairly confident that people who do this shit for a living will see it as well.
Keep in mind that most orbiters tend to be blindly devoted to "celebrities" such as DSP. They either won't know or care that his bankruptcy filing has major inconsistencies, and they would likely be the type to claim that poor DSP is being targeted because he's broke or some other pathetic reasons.

that and hes probably pissed he makes too much to qualify for any kind of assistance in paying for it.
Actually, people can qualify for subsidies if they make up to 4 times the Federal Poverty Level.

For 2019, the FPL for a family of 2 was $16910 (source / archive). Four times that is $67640. So, they could still potentially receive a subsidy so long as their adjusted gross income was $67640 or lower. Of course, the closer to that number, the lower the subsidy. Also, anyone receiving subsidies has to reconcile them on their tax return for the year. If they got too much subsidy during the year, part or all of the difference (based on their AGI/FPL) is added to their federal tax bill. If they didn't get enough subsidy, the difference is an additional tax credit.

Question since I don't pay a lot of attention to Phil, does he stream/ play games from his living room or does he have a dedicated office? If it's a living room I don't think he can claim that. If it's a home office than he can claim square foot of the office divided by square foot of the house/ condo. I think the IRS simplified that to be $5 per square foot to a max of 300 square foot.

The larger the house/ condo you have the less you'll get deducted.

I'm typing this quick before I goin to work , as I've been meaning to register for awhile now. I've actually filed for chapter7 bankruptcy before; about 7 years ago now. I only had 12k roughly in debt, so tiny vs dsp... But still, been through the process. Tbh it was quite simple, but I'll quickly add that the 'hearing' itself wasn't like a typical court case. It was up in a smallish conference room, where several other ppl filing, myself, n oyr lawyers were there. We went up to a table, got read our rights, n basically just answered yes to a bunch of questions.... Then they made it official.

Ofc i only had 3- 4 credit cards of debt... Far from a mortgage n shit, but yeah.... It's not as involved as one may expect ( aside from the initial sitdown w/ my lawyer, this was the only other time we met)

I can add more later if needed but already running late to o/ n shift.

Ah I imagine they held Hideo Kojima up to godlike status. Did this group form after he got fired by Konami?

There's a whole thread for this topic.

Live look at DSP while people are sending him tips about this recent revelation.

The DSP ban institute is running overtime right now. I would laugh, but a few of the messages have quarters attached.

But I bet yours was a lot simpler and didn't involve a foreclosure and 13 or 14 credit cards either. Add to that the fact that his own submitted documents contradict themselves, and he should get a more thorough examination.

Ill give it to the ugly fucker. He really did well as a internet personality for the span of 11 years. Half a million dollars of just living in the moment while the empire of neetdom you built crumbles around you is quite impressive indeed. It seems though that this bankruptcy saga will be the end of the Gout Empire. On his 13 year anniversary, he will be streaming his State of the Stream in Connecticut at his parents house where he will be telling us all how he gets their house when they die. Khet and Jasper will be long gone I'm sure.

The legacy of Phil Burnell will be these last couple of years before the repossession of his WA home. Record it well boys.

i'm more interested in the transcript of the hearing

after his meeting, creditors have 60 days to say "lol no", and it will drag out the whole process, considering he makes as much as he does, creditors could say lol no

were you earning a lot during your bankruptcy? don't need to be specific

So, I've been following DSP for like 2 years. Do fellow detractors who've been around longer than me also think this the single greatest arc ever?

I know there's the fappening, the twitch suspensions, and many others. But having actual documents regarding DSP's finances (and he lying on them) is such an incredible thing to me. I don't know how it can get better than this.

Been aware of his existence since the early 2000's FGC days of IRC and Shoryuken; never met or ran into him because different sides of the country, but knew the drama.

Never want anyone to lose their job and become destitute (because it fucking sucks), but wouldn't mind some karmic justice to fall from the skies. The main reason I'm liking this arc is because he's retarded enough to lie on federal court paperwork. If I didn't know better, I might be willing to dismiss his retardation as balls; but I know better. He's not gonna get to do DX crotch chops at his debtors and sneak away. The courts, debt collectors, and anyone else will run his ass down harder than Jaha would at any tournament.

I wonder if this all backfires epically on him, if he’ll try to blame bugged save states... “D00d, I created a save state right before filing the documents. Shitty game with broken save system. Nothing I could do. *snort*”

And on the pedestal, these words appear:
My name is DSP, King of Hate;
I was pressing buttons, nothing I could do!
