Germany, super short update.

TL;DR:
- The 102 Germans are in Germany now and getting transported to the barracks after a check-up
- They're apparently all 'healthy' and 'risk free' but getting put in quarantine for 14 days
- Russia declined the layover in Moscow, giving 'we're understaffed' as a reason.
- The plane landed in Helsinki instead to refuel and swap the crew

Edit: words are hard.

So when/if this happens, would it be like the 2008 recession? Or more like the Great Depression? That's what I want to know.
Neither probably. new territory. I'd imagine it will be stagnation that suffocates many junk bonds into bankruptcy and an onslaught on the financial markets and thus the Dow will be smashed by nothing under 20%. Its already overpriced and the only thing holding it up is gamblers and speculators hoping for overly optimistic results. . If they clear out of the casino, the casino goes bankrupt. Every placed musical chairs? Institutions will get out long before the individual gamblers are so I'd expect to see real valleys and mountains on the Dow until the smart ones are cashed up.

And with all that cash the Fed will have to pump billions into the markets.

However, if there is a bank run, then all bets are off. The US government may restrict withdrawals.

Bats shouldn't be consumed by anyone, ever. Much less if you're not starving & have access to real food. That's what gets me about this shit, it's so preventable bc the people who eat bats in China are generally well-off financially. Bats have great immune systems, which makes their bodies hostile environments for viruses. So any viruses they do get are p much super-powered, and thanks to the genetic similarity they have to humans, those viruses can easily pass on to us. I think bats are most closely related to flying lemurs or something.

Minor correction, AIDS isn't a virus, it's an immune system condition where your killer t-cell count goes below some threshold.
My best friend who is Chinese says it’s a contest in China to who can eat the most exceptional food. Just to say they’ve done. TCM has some weird fucking idea too.

I feel very sorry for those on the front line.

I'm basically guaranteed to get it if it ever comes here. When your patient population includes homeless people, migrant workers and fucking GYPSIES of all people then you get exposed to an exciting variety of pathogens.

Thankfully I don't believe any of them eat bat soup or drink moon bear bile so I've still got one up on the Chinese.

This is interesting information. Does this mean if someone has a vaccine for SARS that reinfection is still a possibility?
Yes. I’m not sure what the current status is on the SARS vaccine but when they started out, a lot of the test animals actually got sicker when challenged after a vaccine then without (I think due to eosinophilic lung damage but don’t quote me on that.) that’s not unheard of - I think dengue is the same? If you’ve not had one strain you shouldn’t be vaccinated....
as far as I know, the SARS vaccine is not that effective nor is it fully tested (again I may be wrong on that). It got shelved because quarantines stopped transmission to the point it wasn’t needed. They’ve been trying to develop one for years against animal coronaviruses generally because they’re an important set of livestock illnesses. It’s also difficult because transmission is via mucous membranes mainly so there’s local immunity stuff.
The best target will probably be the spike protein.
Immunology is about the most complex shit you can imagine biology wise and my knowledge of it is not that deep.
Any vaccine takes time to make. Flu for example goes on roughly a year cycle, and that’s a finely oiled machine. You have to produce it and test it. They can speed things up if it’s looking really bad (like they did with Ebola) but they don’t like doing that because the safety tests are there for a reason.
I’m rambling. Maybe we have an immunologist in here who can explain more?

Just my little speculative observation,

There are numerous pictures of apartments and entire complexes being locked up/boarded up from the outside in this thread. No one is checking on these people However people keep posting "we know how many died for sure because you are always going to find a body!"

Even if you completely believe the Chinese government is being honest, which I'm not even going to bother arguing against, how the fuck are people going to find dead bodies in appartments they've boarded up/welded shut/put signs up saying stay away! They're not.

That sucks, my friend. I wish you an immune system of steel in the coming months.

I know they stopped a SARS vaccine because there was no demand - so they were shut down from completing it - despite warnings from the developers this was silly to abandon it. I know they petitioned to open up the program again and I hadn't heard they were successful or unsuccessful in obtaining funding. Yes, if there is someone on here with some weight on the subject of vaccines in particular, I'd love to hear their view.

The ignorance displayed on this forum thread over the consuming of bats and other animals is alarming. And as to the origin of this virus, wild guesses based on nothing.
There are a lot of very dumb conspiracy theorists on this forum. The fact that this is primarily confined to China is a very good sign and that the death rate isn’t so high.

There's also the extra diseases that show up when you have dead bodies rotting inside a sealed off building.

Whaaaaaaaaat, wild speculation on the internet?

People see something, they discuss it and speculate. And most of the speculation is from articles, social media, and unverifiable information. Unless you're President Pooh Bear in China, you have very little idea what the details of the situation actually are.

Rated :optimistic: for thinking a dictator would ever get accurate information.

It's fun to speculate and wear tin-foil sometimes. If people come to this thread and take outlandish and unlikely things serious that's their own fault.
