God now a part of really wishes MrTickles was still here. He'd certainly show us why bat soup is actually 500% healthier than the West's disgusting processed foods.
It would be interesting to hear someone argue how eating something that looks like this could be considered "normal."

I posted an al jazeera article in this thread earlier (you can check my posts), but they cited a S&P estimate that a 10% decrease in tourism will reduce China's GDP growth by 1.2% -- that is monumental...

...its the economic catastrophe China is facing.
Yes, a 1-2% decline in GDP growth could bring China's GDP growth down to only 4% for 2020.

Not really, apparently the most elite force of PLA, the airborne corps (similar to 82d but a bigger unit) had a shortage in everything from protective gear to rubbing alcohol and their field hospital was begging civilians online for these supplies. You'd be disappointed if you were hoping for PLA NBC medics to save the day.
Hmm. I assume you have a source on this? I mean, I'm just speculating, but they aren't going to fly in hundreds of highly qualified doctors and more medics without supplies. The idea that road transport would somehow interfere with transport of supplies is also ridiculous. Even if they did have issues with road transport, they have no shortage of cargo lifters for what's important.

Get a load of this:

Time to give China a run for their money, I guess... 😩
That's a change from civet coffee, I guess.

He's simply moved back to what he was originally doing - shitting up NeoGAF.
But on topic, I sure am glad all my older relatives live out in the country away from this potential garbage.

Coming from Koreanews outlets:

Santa Cecilia Conservatory of Italy, a music school of over 450 years.

The school dean recently emailed professors.

This is to inform students that Asian students such as Chinese, Korean, and Japanese cannot take classes because of the epidemic from China.

The school's Asian singer, Cho Sumi, has also studied 81 Asian students, or 6% of the total.

The students are reacting absurdly.

[School of Italian Conservatory]
"I have students who have been kicked out of school. I feel like I'm a potential carrier.

Some professors also reacted to the dean, saying it was clear that the rights of students were violated.

However, the school only said that the medical staff would come and do the test on the 5th of next month and make it attendance if there is no problem.

On the way to and from school, students say the atmosphere is reluctant to all Asians.

[School of Italian Conservatory]
"I was coughing (metro) and told me to go back to your country. When I met you in the elevator, people were very nervous. I saw people walking up.

A local newspaper in France also published an article about coronavirus on its front page, entitled "Yellow Alert."

In addition, as a result of swearing at Chinese people and referring to Asians as viruses in major European tourist destinations, there is a movement against racism with the phrase 'I am not a virus' on SNS.

There is growing concern that anxiety and fear from the spread of the virus are spreading through indiscriminate aversion to certain races.

—————————————————

Not indiscriminate or random. Asian countries have lots of people returning from holiday from places that currently have a highly infectious disease spreading rampantly. No evidence of any accusation. None of the Asians actually speak Italian or label a direct quote, The newspaper is run in the village town of Amiens and is reference to the disease carried by Mosquitos. Quite poetic actually

This official news organization, the biggest in Korea, is being run by an extremely liberal head of state.

Prepare for the next round of fake news tomorrow, all meant to distract us from what is really happening in Wuhan and the whole of China.

Which also means their heavy cargo vehicles (like their version of the deuce, 5-ton, and HMMT) are actually crap at overland that wasn't specially prepared for propaganda. Their cargo vehicles should have a higher center than tracked vehicles and should be able to avoid getting high centered like an Abrams or Bradley or even a Stryker.

I've driven a 5-ton through 3 feet of water with the radiator fan disabled to prevent it from spraying water into the engine, through rough terrain. Hell, I've driven a deuce cross country through the woods.

Their cargo vehicles should be able to handle a torn up road with no problem, and if they can't, well, it's more "point at laugh at the pollution goblins" time, because, holy shit.
Frankly, the PLA's off-road vehicles not having any off-road capabilities wouldn't surprise me one bit. Every other thing about this outbreak has been comically mishandled, why not the fucking vehicles too?

Here's the document from the corps hospital allowing their members to solicit civilians donations.

Apparently 12 in Aus now, here it comes!

Remember, we're at just shy of 15,000. Around 15-20k is when all these numbers become bullshit -- even more than they already are -- because they won't have the resources to test everyone, hospitalize everyone, or even track everyone.

That's when the numbers get real fun.

edit: Also, according to Mr. Obvious, Metro.co.uk is reporting China is being ordered to cull their pets.

... What if this shit can spread human -> pet -> human?

They should get a Pulitzer.

With China, I could very well imagine that someone gets the contract to make an off-road transport vehicle, but thanks to cronyism and favoritism, it ends up with some minister's pet, who churns out a really shitty vehicle that barely works on roads, but the capabilities get overreported, cause if the true attributes of that vehicle would be presented, everyone involved would be send off to the organ-harvesting gulags.

I don't know why I'm even slightly fucking surprised by the fact that the PLA's vehicles are absolute fucking trash. I mean, where have we seen all this before when it came to a foreign military.

"The Soviet Union has 10X the tanks (that don't run and have gas or drivers) and 50X the vehicles (that don't run have gas or drivers) and 10X the helicopters (see vehicles) and they've got the most troops (untrained, unarmed, poorly fed) than NATO and nobody stands a chance!"

Then the Soviet Union collapses and we find out that it's all bullshit.

Now, we've got:

What makes you think they've got enough parts, pilots, or whatever else they need to even do airlift of supplies?

I mean, a Communist country being a complete and utter shitshow that falsified everything for propaganda purposes? Historically, that's NEVER fucking happened!

That's probably how it went. OR, the initial runs (Gen-0 and Gen-1) of the vehicles worked as advertised, but then feature creep, new companies taking over part replacement, and shoddy maintenance led to complete garbage. Hell, just look at the US military's HMMWV problem. Gen-0 and Gen-1 were superior to CUC-V's and could be armored and were a definite upgrade from glorified pickup trucks. Now they're cramped, have overheating and power train problems, and everyone curses at them.

That's not surprising. Knowing what we know about China, Chinese culture, and the Chinese military, it REALLY doesn't bode well for a comprehensive and functional NBC Warfare program.

See, NBC Warfare is one area where you can't have asskissing yes-men running the show and a culture of cover-ups. Just look at the Obama Era Air Force Missile Corps and how it kept getting cocked up since the watch-word was "don't bother anyone over the rank of Major, they're busy sucking up" and from what it looked like is that nobody knew what the fuck they were doing for guiding it.

NBC Warfare requires a LOT of training. You spend more time training than even the line-slime think you would. To top it off, you have to cross-train with everyone else (Want to know the definition of frustration? Trying to teach tankers how to use their NBC systems...) repeatedly and often. They have to stay sharp on NBC threats and spend a LOT of time reading everything everywhere, from RAND reports to DIA and CIA extracts to everything else they can grab. They're constantly on the lookout for good talent and have a rep for poaching NBC troops from non warfare sections if they show talent.

They constantly have to work with live agents, including biological weapons, as well as do constant practical exercises. This is also EXPENSIVE (During the Cold War ChemCorps budget outstripped III and I Corps put together) and training/manpower intensive, since NBC Warfare troops also have a very short shelf-life compared to other MOS's.

If anyone REALLY ran the data, took into account Chinese civilian, political, and military culture, do you think they actually thought that the Chinese could take 17-22 year old dipshits and train them for the wide variety of tasks that the NBC world requires without someone fucking up somewhere bigly?

The other thing is, NBC Warfare is great for siphoning funds from (The Clinton Administration was good at this since they pretty much gutted DoD's NBC sections) since a LOT of the budget is black budget, which means more than likely any Chinese NBC troops just painted their faces black and pretended they had masks on.

But that's sperging for another day...

Man their food supply is super fucked innit? First swine flu knocks out millions of pigs causing a pork shortage, then H5N1 rears its head out of the fucking nowhere and is gonna wreck their poultry supply just as hard. And even though pets probably don't spread the disease, the people there are gonna be too scared and paranoid to eat them. I don't think it's too unfounded to say there may be an honest to god famine if their logistical supply gets too stretched by these quarantines and infections.

"But the international community would donate foodstuffs!"

You're kidding yourself if you think that shit won't get stolen and hoarded by the local police/military/CCP elites.

All they need is a plant virus.

Yes, a 1-2% decline in GDP growth could bring China's GDP growth down to only 4% for 2020.

See, for that to be true, tourism would have to be the only part of the economy affected. You're assuming every other sector of the economy will just trundle along completely normally. They won't, it's a completely laughable concept. The Wuhan flu is going to hit everything, from manufacturing to finance to construction to agriculture. And it's going to hit hard. At the very least China's going to have a terrible time keeping all the plates spinning in their house of cards debt structures.

Now, as a follow-on effect, capital is going to flee China and the East in general. Where do you think that money's going to be parked? Well, where money always goes in a crisis. The good old stable US of A.

Just a word on bats. Bats are incredibly important to ecosystems so the last thing we need to do is exterminate them. They’re also the owners of very interesting immune systems and can harbour all kinds of things without getting sick. When you’re presented with a novel disease and need to look for a vector, it’s almost a joke that you check the bats first.
The best thing humans can do with bats is leave them the fuck alone. It’s illegal in the uk to even touch one without a permit. You would be insane to handle a wild bat. They have teeth like needles, lick everything, their shit is hot with pathogens and you can safely assume that any body fluids are teeming with unimaginable plagues. Rabies, all sorts of shit.
Eating bats is a very bad idea. It requires being near bats (bad) being in bat habitats (bad) collecting and handling bats (bad) storing bats (bad) and slaughtering bats (bad.) maybe if you cook ‘em really well you’ll kill anything off but it’s the process of having them in the food market/production chain that’s bad.

In Australia bats are everywhere, and if they one day started producing viruses with lethal combinations, Sydney in Australia would be a ghost town in a week.
Hendra virus has already done this - bats roosting and shifting on horse food. Virus passes bat-horse-human. Luckily it’s been very rare outbreaks so far. If you have bats on your property treat them with a respectful distance and don’t touch nothing theyve crapped on.
So, having been hospitalised by both H1N1 and H3N2, I guess I'm probably fucked for this one too, huh?
no you’ll be fine. It’s not very transmissible to humans if you’re a bird, you’re screwed
