Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Prefab Container Buildings like that exist without bars on the windows too. Don't pretend it's a fucking coincidence that every. single. one. has barred windows. On both the inside and the outside. If they were just using what was around, why don't we see variety (ie: some with and some without bars)?
Or is it a China-thing to have these containers around by the dozens with every single one of them havig barred windows on all sides?

It fucking reeks of being a deliberate choice to use those containers and those containers only.
Why would they use different container offices when they can just get a whole bunch from the same supplier and the bars are completely irrelevant?

Chinamen are devoid of honesty, why would they not have plenty of containerized offices available with bars on the windows?

You're entirely correct about the perceived roles of sons vs daughters in Chinese societies - that the daughters would marry and not be there to care for their parents but rather their in-laws, where as sons would marry and have an obligation to do so for his own parents. But I've seen stuff that says it was rather more complicated than a total disdain for daughters; many parents didn't give them up easily or without a fight and there were parents who went to lengths to hide and keep daughters too, as well as families who would adopt them within China if the state allowed, which it often did not.

When we discuss dictatorships, we often forget that those within their borders suffer greatly. This account is horrific. I'm glad the girl found a safe home.

How is this good news? He could still be infected for all we know...
I want to say that if I were in this person's position, that I would willingly spend the next two weeks and change isolated.

But I'm not really sure how I'd be by day ten. But then again I'd have all my shit with me, right? So it probably wouldn't be too bad.

An antiviral compound discovered at Emory University could potentially be used to treat the new coronavirus associated with the outbreak in China and spreading around the globe. Drug Innovation Ventures at Emory (DRIVE), a non-profit LLC wholly owned by Emory, is developing the compound, designated EIDD-2801.
In testing with collaborators at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Vanderbilt University Medical Center, the active form of EIDD-2801, which is called EIDD-1931, has shown efficacy against the related coronaviruses SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome)- and MERS-CoV (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus). Some of the data was recently published in Journal of Virology.

EIDD-2801 is an oral ribonucleoside analog that inhibits the replication of multiple RNA viruses, including respiratory syncytial virus, influenza, chikungunya, Ebola, Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus, and Eastern equine encephalitis viruses.

“We have been planning to enter human clinical tests of EIDD-2801 for the treatment of influenza, and recognized that it has potential activity against the current novel coronavirus,” says George Painter, PhD, director of the Emory Institute for Drug Development (EIDD) and CEO of DRIVE. “Based on the drug’s broad-spectrum activity against viruses including influenza, Ebola and SARS-CoV/MERS-CoV, we believe it will be an excellent candidate.”

“Our studies in the Journal of Virology show potent activity of the EIDD-2801 parent compound against multiple coronaviruses including SARS and MERS,” says Mark Denison, MD, the Stahlman Professor of Pediatrics and director of pediatric infectious diseases at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. “It also has a strong genetic barrier to development of viral resistance, and its oral bioavailability makes it a candidate for use during an outbreak.”

“Generally speaking, seasonal flu is still a much more common threat than this coronavirus, however, novel emerging coronaviruses represent a considerable threat to global health as evidenced by the new 2019-nCoV,” said Ralph Baric, PhD, an epidemiology professor at the University of North Carolina’s Gillings School of Global Public Health. “But the reason the new coronavirus is so concerning is that it’s much more likely to be deadly than the flu – fatal for about one in 25 people versus one in 1,000 for the flu.”

The development of EIDD-2801 has been funded in whole or in part with Federal funds from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), under contract numbers HHSN272201500008C and 75N93019C00058, and from the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), under contract numbers HDTRA1-13-C-0072 and HDTRA1-15-C-0075, for the treatment of Influenza, coronavirus, chikungunya, and Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus.

Hot dog! Look at all of that aluminum and rainwater and all those power tools and wires laying around. Makes me feel all tingly.

Really though, this picture has to be staged. Every worker has a hard hat on. I don't believe that this is a real Chinese work site.

And then there's this fucking guy who doesn't give two single Communist fucks. He's wearing galoshes whist standing on wet metal. This is a man that has stared Death in the eye and Death moved on to the next guy.

We'd keep you company, ❤

it's just hit India and if any country is more fucked when it comes to hygiene and healthcare than China it's India, the virus is going to go into over drive, hopefully India gets fucking blockaded
Don’t worry man, their government is working overtime on Twitter to let people know about homeopathic “remedies” for Coronavirus and where to buy them.

If they use smaller duct work, the poison gas won't billow to Party standards.

But it doesn't seem that outlandish. You don't know what part of the building this is and where it is located in regards to the central plant.

Yeah... I know every office building I've ever worked in had bars on all the windows. lol wait no, that never happens. They only put bars on the windows in ghettos.

Disabled boy dies in China after father quarantined
Two officials in China have been removed from their posts after a teenager with cerebral palsy died when his father - and sole carer - was quarantined for suspected coronavirus.

Yan Cheng, 16, was found dead on Wednesday, a week after his father and brother were placed in quarantine.

The boy was fed only twice during this time, according to reports.

Both the local Communist Party secretary and mayor in Huajiahe town have been dismissed over the case.

Yan Cheng's story has been trending on social media websites.

The family lived in China's central Hubei province, the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak.

According to local media, the teenager's father had posted on Chinese social media platform Weibo appealing for help and explaining that his son had been left alone without food or water.

Cerebral palsy is the name for a group of conditions that appear in early childhood, and affect movement and co-ordination. Symptoms vary, and can include tremors, stiff or weak muscles, problems swallowing, and trouble with vision, speech and hearing. Those affected may be severely disabled.

Officials had previously announced that an investigation would be carried out into the boy's death.

In China, 361 people have died of coronavirus and more than 17,000 cases of the virus have been confirmed. There have also been more than 150 confirmed cases of the virus outside China, including one death in the Philippines.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned the number of cases is likely to rise further, and Chinese authorities have introduced a number of measures to try to halt the virus's spread.
ETA: didn’t notice it had been posted, sorry.
