Watched the Savannah con panel. Vic talked about directors at anime studios, mentioned that a lot of times, studios would be so desperate for directors they'd hire people with no prior experience or knowledge, like a dude working for an ad agency. He also brings up Funimation directors thinking he's difficult to work with. He claims he always made an effort to be easy to work with (always on time, finishes work quickly, friendly and humourous while working). The only reason directors found him difficult to work with was because he wanted to do certain takes more than once, because he wanted the end result to be perfect. He said that the end product often suffered because the directors didn't really care, because they either didn't really know what they were doing or just didn't care.

Just thought it was interesting. Really puts the whole "difficult to work with" thing in perspective.

Directors of dubs are really important, it's not something that is talked about too much but when a director is good the entire work will be benefited by that, I actually have a story one Mexican Voice Actor told at one panel that exemplifies that.

The guy who played Freezer (also played the superhero guy in Drawn Together) told how when making the voice for Freezer the director told him to make a regal, gentleman like voice for Freezer at first, then after Freezer transforms and gets all bulky, he changed the voice to a deeper more aggressive pitch, then when Freezer gets all Ridley Scott the voice is more gnarly and high pitch sounding more alien like, then when Freezer transforms... AGAIN... he uses a more honeyed tone essentially making him sound like how gay people are usually portrayed in Mexico.

All of these changes in voice occuring because the director gave the indication, going beyond what was necessary because she was good at her job, and this culminates during the Resurrection F movie where after one more transformation and the actor asking what the hell do I do now? The new director told him, "Use the voice you have never used before for this character... A male voice."

Good direction makes one hell of a difference for dubs, If Funimation uses shit directors that explains a lot about their dubs quality.
