You only need to look at Comicsgate to see the success people can achieve outside the mainstream/on their own. And thats even when you include the Renfamous and Anti-CG types spewing the BS like a manure spreader.
EVS was the only "name' guy. Zak and Malin had some lesser notriaty. Guys like Cecil, Clint Stoker etc were first timers. Hell even Tug made bank because they all promoted the hell out of themselves to their audiences and built new ones. There is no reason that VAs with some work under their belts can't easily copy the formula. But they will have to accept that they will get their own blowback from the mainstream they left, and their own "Antis" that will get assmad over meaningless crap.
How exactly would they copy the CG formula? It's relatively simple and inexpensive to create a comic book compared to licensing and distributing a Japanese cartoon, I would think. I highly doubt Vic or most other VAs have the connections with Japanese companies needed to acquire a license, at least not nearly at the scale of a company that's been doing this for 30 years or so. Nick also has repeatedly said he thinks Vic should start his own dubbing studio, but that'd be pointless if there's nothing coming to him from Japan to dub.
Don't get me wrong; the rise of less-woke dubbing and distributing companies coming out of this is something I'd love to see. But I wouldn't count on it.
I don't think it'd be good to ban cosplay, since the vast majority of people cosplaying at these things are just fans doing it for fun rather than professional weirdoes. But I wouldn't invite or recognize "official" cosplayers. If they want to come, they can buy a ticket like everyone else. If they want to do signings, they can drop $200 or whatever on a table in the merchant hall. Just my unexperienced opinion, though.I kind of feel bad for any sane cosplayers that are out there. I mean, law of averages suggests there have to be at least a couple that aren't narcissistic harpies. But after a year of this and years of seeing a sampling of these people over in our Beauty Parlor, if I were running a convention I'd be tempted to just ban cosplay altogether. It seems like some of the worst, most toxic things in the community involve this particular subset of attendees.
