Eh, I disagree. No term limits is why we have such a skilled operator as Mitch McConnell in the Senate. Thirty five years of experience has made him a judge confirming machine.

No, the reason why American politics is fucked is because of an inattentive electorate. Term limits wouldn't have stopped Mitt Romney from getting elected. It's his first term. What put him in the Senate is the voters of Utah not paying attention and voting in that limp wristed pussy.

If I may piggyback off this:

I understand the sentiment behind wanting term limits, but at least from where I sit, I see “career” politicians as a necessary evil. The ones that are old enough to remember how shitty things like socialism (just as an example off the top of my head) actually work out IRL are there to mitigate or prevent the damage from a popular ruler who threatens the system.

I'm old enough to remember the "Contract with America" Republicans. They swept into office then were swept out later because many kept their term limit promises. This was just as they were starting to get positions on important congressional committees and such.

Honestly, it was just a GOP election year talking point to cut out a bunch of the old Democrat deadwood from a bygone era that didn't really represent their deep red districts anymore. A one-time move to leverage a political advantage that people still recite as if it worked out well and solved problems. It didn't.

Reality is that professional politicians are dirtbags but they are dirtbags who do their job well.

You don't need to be old "career" politicians to remind people of that. You can see it in clips, read it in documents and books, or just ask people that live in those ass-backwards socialist countries then or now that socialism is bullcrap. That is a ridiculous excuse to not have term limits.

It oils the “us vs. them” narrative on a generational scale, demeaning an old person’s merit in formulating a political opinion on the grounds that they’re out of touch with reality, or are senile. Also overlaps it with a SJW-ish mindset that old rich white people are hazardous for the world. Millennials are the one’s that apply the latter a lot. Zoomers just used it to laugh at their elders.

The problem with term limits is not the politicians, it's the lobbyists. There was an anecdote I heard from one Congresscritter (I believe it was a state legislator and also a Republican, but thats neither here nor there) who campaigned on a "term limits" platform. He described getting to the capitol and meeting with some big lobbyist for the first time, and as a naive well-meaning newcomer, he confidently asserted that he had no intentions of "selling out" his constituents for big corporate dollars. The lobbyist leaned back in his chair, smiled, and calmly told him that he didn't need to cooperate. He had campaigned with a promise to only serve X terms, but the lobbyist had made no such promise. The lobby merely needed to wait until he stepped down and was replaced by some other person, more pliable and willing to play the game.

The congressperson said that he never felt more despondent about the fate of democracy than in that moment. I can sympathize. Money speaks volumes louder than words, and until the swamp is drained, the will of the people will take second place to the will of the corporations. I still support term limits, but am far less enthused about what effect it would have.
