Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

and they claim it's racist that people are afraid of going to Chinese businesses. Man :(
Yeah but at least, the owner of the restaurant did the right thing in warning these customers despite his reputation suffering a great deal, at a time when people already avoid everything remotely asian like the plague, it does certainly not help him financially.

Poor virus, a few weeks old and still no official name. Is WHO stalling to save face for China? There are precedents for naming illnesses after the locations that they seem to originate in: Lyme virus, Norwalk virus, Spanish flu...heck, even the American Legion couldn't shut down 'Legionnaire's Disease'.

Perhaps they will go to a different naming system that will be less offensive. Maybe something like Hurricane names where we can have outbreaks of the 'Becky' flu or 'Chuck' disease

Doesn't matter, Wuflu is going nowhere.

How about calling it the CCP-KIller Virus?

Isn't n95 too porous for this one?
No. This has been answered multiple times, N95 statistically works 2.5% less than N100. 2.5% is much less than the usual sources of contagion (clothes, mishandling the mask, improper eye protection, not changing the mask enough, etc.) And N95 is certainly much better than nothing.

They killed him. If were any other nation but China I'd give them the benefit of the doubt, but it's China so fuck em -- they killed him. Either they killed him outright or they dragged out his death by torturing him to the point where his immune system was in no condition to fight the virus. The torture could've been something as simple as denying him food and water, and the more direct route could've been something like a potassium OD. He's probably already been cremated so fuck if we'll ever know what really did it.

Always worried the Hong Kong protests would be Tiananmen Square 2 if they got bad enough, but now I can't help but wonder if it'll be Wuhan or some other quarantined city. This time around tank man will run at that MBT and start coughing all over it.
Maybe the MBTs will look at the people, turn around, and go after the fucks who sent them out. This virus is not affecting just one city. Spreading all over China. Lots of PLA members are likely to have family affected.

Sorry for the double quote.

The NYtimes has a short interview with Dr. Li. Here are the most interesting bits;

"Why were you so suspicious at that point? Had you already received any news or heard anything?

Because there were already patients being treated under quarantine.

Was that at the end of December?

Yes."

So they were quarantines patients in fucking december but went through with that 40k dinner party almost a month later....

"How long will it take you to recover? What do you plan to do afterward?

I started coughing on Jan. 10. It will take me another 15 days or so to recover. I will join medical workers in fighting the epidemic. That’s where my responsibilities lie."

He died almost a month after he started showing symptoms, and nearly 2 weeks after he thought he'd recover. This seems really fucking fishy.

The whole thing;
Last week, Elsie Chen, a Times researcher working with our correspondents Chris Buckley and Steven Lee Myers, interviewed Li Wenliang, the Wuhan doctor who was silenced after warning colleagues about the coronavirus in late December. On Friday, Dr. Li died from the virus, which he caught from a patient; he was hospitalized when Ms. Chen interviewed him on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1, via the WeChat social media platform. These are edited and condensed excerpts from the interview.
When did you first realize that this new virus was highly contagious? It seemed that you hadn’t taken any precautions when you were infected.
I knew it when the patient I came in contact with infected her family, and I was infected right afterward. Thus I discovered it was highly contagious. The patient had no symptoms, so I got careless.
On Dec. 31, when you told people in the WeChat group about the SARS-like virus, did you do so because you had seen the high risk of human-to-human transmission?
I suspected that, and it’s always better to be cautious and take protective measures.
Why were you so suspicious at that point? Had you already received any news or heard anything?
Because there were already patients being treated under quarantine.
Was that at the end of December?
Yes.
Were there other doctors who shared the information and reminded others to protect themselves from this mysterious pneumonia?
There were discussions among our colleagues.
What was everybody talking about? How did they evaluate the situation at that point?
It was that SARS might come back. We needed to be ready for it mentally. Take protective measures.
Looking back at what has happened, do you think the situation would be very different now if the Wuhan government hadn’t stopped you from warning others and sharing the information? Do you think it would have been better if the information had been more public and transparent, for the public and for doctors?
If the officials had disclosed information about the epidemic earlier, I think it would have been a lot better. There should be more openness and transparency.
How did you feel when the police accused you of spreading rumors?
The police believed this virus was not confirmed to be SARS. They believed I was spreading rumors. They asked me to acknowledge that I was at fault.
I felt I was being wronged, but I had to accept it. Obviously I had been acting out of good will. I felt very sad seeing so many people losing their loved ones.
Why did you decide to become a doctor? What made you proud to be one? Can you say anything about your family?
I thought it was a very stable job. Lately, patient-doctor relationships have soured. I am happy as long as my patients are satisfied with their treatment.
My older child is 4 years and 10 months old. The younger one is still unborn, due in June. I miss my family. I talk to them by video.
How long will it take you to recover? What do you plan to do afterward?
I started coughing on Jan. 10. It will take me another 15 days or so to recover. I will join medical workers in fighting the epidemic. That’s where my responsibilities lie.

Chinese scientists have said they think they found the intermediate link between bats and humans - the pangolins, a group of mammals that have scales and are all endangered because their meat is a delicacy in China and Vietnam and their scales are used in TCM.

Singapore has found three additional case they cannot link to either China or other cases, meaning it probably circulating within the community there. They have raised their response to "Orange", whatever that means.

Op-Ed in the CBC arguing against travel bans, saying it does little to contain its spread, given the damage it does to the economy. Again, a request to biomedical Kiwis - what do you think of the case for and against travel bans and quarantines? Because it really feels like the anti-travel-ban experts are pushing an agenda here, that international travel cannot be interrupted at any cost.

I work in public health, but only after damage is done. From my understanding so far, I would be in favor of travel bans for any unnecessary travel to/from affected regions, quarantine at home for anyone who may be infected, and using mobile medical services to treat.

Anyone requiring an ICU should be in an isolation room, ambulances should be reserved only for this purpose to the extent that they become necessary and should not be going on any other calls. Medical workers should definitely be suiting up (we already are with pneumonia/flu infection deaths, if they're not specifically diagnosed before arrival, as a precaution). Keep in mind infected have been in the area where I live, only one or two- so the likelihood is very low. But all are in high alert right now.

Takes me back to the AIDS crisis; not knowing when a precaution is enough, quite, so overdoing it.

We've been on n99/n100s for a while regardless though.

Eat shit jinping, nobody wants your disease ridden country

Sorry, I don't know how the statistics of effectiveness of masks works, it's never been something relevant to me before, and I'm not following this thread with baited breath either. Didn't mean to dredge up old topics, I just remembered that for a while "N95 doesn't work" was in the box at the top of the forum. Thanks for the clarification. I wasn't really aware there was a "better than nothing" thing, the way a lot of people seemed to talk it was more like "Unless you're using P100 filters, you might as well just not bother".

Think of it like birth control; 99% effectiveness with a condom vs 100% with abstinence. Obviously if you still need to live your life it's better to suit up and take that 1% chance.

As for the PLA getting assistance, this is unlikely due to the fact that China is all about image and as a result accepting foreign help will make them look needy and poor.

Yes. People don't really understand how image works for these communist countries. Years ago, a group of Venezuelans started a campaign to gather basic medicine. They got it from private institutions, governments, and people all over the world. I'm talking about basic things like medicine for asthma, diabetes, infections. And the Venezuelan governments didn't allow them to enter the country. They also have even thrown away good medicine that is donated because they claim they can manage themselves. I know a case of a man who died after he went to the hospital with a sore throat. China is ten times worst, they actually don't care about their people only about their image.

Seriously, who looks at that and thinks 'wow, what a great source of protein'?
It's not for the protein. It's because it's "exotic". That's the reason. Think of these type of chinese people like the "new rich" type trying to impress everybody, except that instead of buying cars, they eat strange animals.

It's actually mostly for their scales, which, just like bits of rhinos and tigers, are used in 'Traditional Chinese Medicine'. The meat is also thought to be good for you out of all proportion of what food can actually do.

Aite, just got home. Let's see how the Twitter account's doing:

This is BIG. A lady in one of the Wuhan stadium/hall-turned-field hospital shot a video about the conditions. She's very puzzled and worried about the way the authorities are handling this, as per her statements there are no toilets nor running water in the place. To go to the loo, the patients have to hike outside the place for around 200+ meters and water can only be refilled at one of the ends of the hall. She remarks that it's packed with people and that cross-infection is very likely as there is no designated quarantine zone inside and finally concludes with a plea for help.

Archive'd, and by God it's so systematic with each patient even being numbered. Just like a place where the sick and undesirables went in the 40's.

Some alleged "teacher" and vice president of some brainlet research institute is on a tirade and warning the people that the Western powers and their lapdogs will likely use the good doctor's death as a point against the CCP to hinder the Chinese economy and its' modernization. He goes on to remark that it is normal for medical personnel to get infected and sometimes die in the course of duty. Thus, we should stand together and fight anti-Chinese and anti-Party sentiments.

I'm fucking sickened by these exceptional motherfuckers towing the Party line through Dr. Li's death, of all things. Academia really is the disease, I'm MOTI and I'm proud of it. Fuck.

This is a Weibo conversation on the Vice-Mayor of Yinglingzhen, Fujian casually spitting on the ground during a CCTV live interview and asking for a re-do.

Finally, the medical supplies destined for Chongqing got yoinked mid-journey by Yunnan.

Mmm. Delicious.

Seriously, who looks at that and thinks 'wow, what a great source of protein'?
I dunno, but they look related to armadillos, which are nearly as disease ridden as bats.

But I think we all know the real animals at cause for this shit. The blaming of exotic species is getting ridiculous.
