I am honestly sad for the death of dr. Li... he is helping people even after his death. He became a symbol of some kind of resistence against the dumbification the chinese government is peddling.
Damn, he was still so young. I know many people already died but I also feel so bad for their families.
Please God, let this virus die out on it's own, fast.

I hope this starts a revolution. Communist countries don't tend to last over 70 years. China is overdue.

Ah okay, this is one of those snobby "your language iz dumb you ameritard" things... understood! Carry on, my exotic ethnic friend! No hard feelings -- the British hate yankie English too.
No snobbery implied. I was pointing out that different languages have different formatting, and don't always neatly translate. Russian-to-English is very much one of those. :)

He is a symbol of everything wrong with china

The very best of humanity callously and cynically snuffed out so some shitbag in the CCP can pretend everything is fine to his shitbag bosses who dont want anybody to know just how worthless they and their government are

I agree. It’s humbling to see that people like this exist even in a country like china. Whistleblowing when you know what will happen to you if you do. That is true selflessness and bravery. Lets not forget that there are decent people on the frontline of all this. It’s the CCP who deserve to fall, not your average Chinese.

Endangered pangolin identified as potential coronavirus host
Link
BEIJING, CHINA -- The endangered pangolin may be the link that facilitated the spread of the novel coronavirus across China, Chinese scientists said Friday.

Researchers have long suspected that the virus, which has now killed more than 630 people and infected some 31,000, was passed from an animal to a human at a market in the central Chinese city of Wuhan late last year.

Researchers at the South China Agricultural University have identified the scaly mammal as a "potential intermediate host," the university said in a statement, without providing further details.

The new virus is believed to have originated in bats, but researchers have suggested there could have been an "intermediate host" in the transmission to humans.

After testing more than 1,000 samples from wild animals, scientists from the university found the genome sequences of viruses found on pangolins to be 99 percent identical to those on coronavirus patients, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

The pangolin is considered the most trafficked animal on the planet and more than one million have been snatched from Asian and African forests in the past decade, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

They are destined for markets in China and Vietnam, where their scales are used in traditional medicine -- despite having no medical benefits -- and their meat is bought on the black market.

Shadowy wildlife trade

Experts on Friday called for the Chinese scientists to release more data from their research.

Simply reporting the similarity between the genome sequences of viruses is "not sufficient," said James Wood, a veterinary medicine professor at the University of Cambridge.

Wood said the results could have been caused by "contamination from a highly infected environment."

"We would need to see all of the genetic data to get a feel for how related the human and pangolin viruses are," Jonathan Bell, a professor of molecular virology at the University of Nottingham, said.

China in January ordered a temporary ban on the trade in wild animals until the epidemic is under control.

The country has long been accused by conservationists of tolerating a shadowy trade in endangered animals for food or as ingredients in traditional medicines.

"If we want to do everything in our power to prevent deadly disease outbreaks such as coronavirus, then a permanent ban on wildlife trade, in China, and around the world, is the only solution," said Neil D'Cruze, global head of wildlife research at World Animal Protection.

A price list that circulated on China's internet for a business at the Wuhan market showed a menagerie of animals or animal-based products including live foxes, crocodiles, wolf puppies, giant salamanders, snakes, rats, peacocks, porcupines, camel meat and other game -- 112 items in all.

The SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) virus that killed hundreds of people in China and Hong Kong in 2002-03 also has been traced to wild animals, with scientists saying it likely originated in bats, later reaching humans via civets.

"Working to end the trade in wildlife can help to resolve some of the longer-term risks associated with animal reservoirs of zoonoses," Wood said, referring to infectious diseases that can be passed between animals and humans.

Stop eating fucking endangered animals and maybe they won't pass diseases onto you.
Besides, Pangolins? They're real life pokemon.
Fuck anyone who kills those cute yet ridiculous things.

Because nothing says “we got this!” Quite like herding people into camps. “Death Camps! The Solution to all your societies ills!”

What the Holy Fuck are they thinking?
A better question is: what is the world thinking?

If 625 people die from a virus, you set up field hospitals and treat the sick. You don't build new hospitals, fill them past capacity, then start shipping people off to soccer stadiums.

The numbers we get from Tencent are 25k dead due to the virus. We know that number is low, at least because of differences in how we measure disease in the West. But now they're using office buildings to keep people contained.

How many sick people are sitting around in quarantine together making each other more ill as the virus works its way through the crowd? I get that governments will occasionally ignore each other's atrocities in the name of good relations, but this is getting to the point where we're watching the Chinese murder their own people through bad hygiene.

I want to see another video from the guy telling us not to worry. I want a wellness check on him.

Chinese scientists have said they think they found the intermediate link between bats and humans - the pangolins, a group of mammals that have scales and are all endangered because their meat is a delicacy in China and Vietnam and their scales are used in TCM.

Singapore has found three additional case they cannot link to either China or other cases, meaning it probably circulating within the community there. They have raised their response to "Orange", whatever that means.

Op-Ed in the CBC arguing against travel bans, saying it does little to contain its spread, given the damage it does to the economy. Again, a request to biomedical Kiwis - what do you think of the case for and against travel bans and quarantines? Because it really feels like the anti-travel-ban experts are pushing an agenda here, that international travel cannot be interrupted at any cost.
Could be selfishness. Lots of STEM experts spend much of their lives flying around attending and speaking at conferences to solicit grants, find out what's going on in their field and generally "network". A proliferation of travel bans would be quite the annoyance to someone who lives this jet-setting lifestyle. Also if they have more commercially-oriented projects they are much less likely to get investors if the markets are spooked by Corona-chan.

They get to treat those who actually labour for a living in the fields, those who actually try and do technical work in the industries, those who attempt actual scientific research in important fields as disposable and worthless trash at best, and dangerous potential hazards to their comfortable positions at worst who need to be taken out back and silenced the moment they step out of line.

This is why that country, for all the economic might its mass semi-slave labour has helped create, is such a toxic shithole, both figuratively and literally

That's basically Soviet Union or any other commie shithole in a nutshell.

This is Korolev, the guy who built the rocket that took first man into space. Poor bastard barely survived his trip to Gulag and how many world scientists were shot and wasted?

Anyone with two brain cells will be trying to leave commie paradise at first available opportunity, meanwhile the plutocrats in charge give two shits. If not him, someone else would be building that rocket, or they just steal it from someone in the west who had.

The CCP has created the first martyr, in my opinion. There will be more. Sad to say, but the shit's going to hit the fans in larger and larger quantities.

@Mr. Faget - you are quite right about Russian to English translation. Russian grammar is very complicated, has cases most Americans have never even heard of.

For what it’s worth Korolev’s death was captured on film. It’s the second launch of the N-1. The Soviet equivalent to the Saturn V. About 2 minutes in. Unquestionably one of the most Hardcore Metal deaths ever.

Of course the Soviet Union being the Soviet Union this footage has only recently come to light.

Really? I thought Korolev died from diseases, mainly tumor. Being in gulag does affect your health.

There were many incidents while launching spacecraft. During one, the explosion killed some number of generals, who refused to hide in a bunker. They just wanted to enjoy the launch and instead they turned into coal, as fireball of explosion destroyed everything around the starting point.

But I never heard that Korolev died in such an incident. Shitty medical care in Soviet Union looks more plausible to me.

According to wikipedia he choked on his own blood during a botched surgery because they couldn't intubate him due to the deformities in his mandible which he suffered on the gulag. (And he started bleeding unexpectedly because they also botched that.) I hope at least the anesthetics worked because if not that's an awful way to go.

I know that it's obvious but is this site banned in China?

It it isn't it will be soon. WAY too much truth spoken here for the CCP.

Had some thoughts while doing some chores.

As it is presently, believe China runs on small margins of food and certain goods. Not talking useless shit like hairpins, but medical supplies.

It is no small task to adequately feed and otherwise provide for a nation of 1.4 billion people. At least am not aware of anyone starving. I give credit for this to Deng Hsiao-Ping, who re-introduced the market economy to China after the 58-62 Famine and then the 1965-76 Cultural Revolution. Will go so far as to say the average Chinese person day-to-day lives within the market economy. They shop at a store, supermarket, and/or an outdoor market for their food/clothes/consumer goods.

The problems we are already starting to see on a small scale are these.
1. Stocks of food/critical supplies in locked-down cities such as Wuhan are apparently low.
2. Suspect there are problems getting supplies into cities. Some roads are torn up. Some towns/villages have erected roadblocks.
3. The African Swine Flu is still ongoing. Has resulted in the death of maybe 100 million hogs or so, and pork is a highly-consumed meat in China. You also have the avian flu, resulting in the death of thousands of chickens. People eat eggs and chicken.

Here's the problem I see that could happen on a larger scale, should this virus continue to spread, a derivative of something Ivan Shatov posted a few days ago. If you have X number of people sick, Y number taking care of them/maintaining public order/safety, and Z number effectively locked down, in the words of a German general, "Who will actually produce economic goods?" Not talking shit like phones and TVs. Talking food processing and delivery. Talking production of medicines and medical supplies, such as masks and testing kits. Talking oil refineries to crack that crude into gasoline/diesel. Talking farm implements and farm equipment, spare parts for vital machinery. I simply don't believe China has enough civilian reserves of these things to overcome widespread production disruptions. We already know China hasn't enough masks and medical supplies to go around. And from a previous poster's comments wonder how much the military has in the way of these supplies outside of war reserve stocks, which I now believe are rather limited.

Bet the top levels of the CCP have plenty. of food/medical supplies/motor fuels/whatever stashed away.

Food/supply shortages could cause a bunch of second-order deaths, especially in conjunction with power shortages/blackouts and failures in trash collection.

Just some stuff I was thinking about.
