Generally, landlords here in Canada are not legally allowed to ask for last month's rent (at least, not in the province in which I reside) but definitely first month's rent and damage deposit, which is half of the price of rent. So let's say Chin and Peetz get a two-bedroom apartment for $1800 (more than reasonable, and would likely be as dumpy as the current one she's been smelling and roaching up for several years). They will need to cough up $2700 to plonk down straightaway for that pad if they want it.
Landlords also do credit checks, as well as reference checks for your last few rentals and your place of employment. It's an involved process, but good rentals are hard to score in any major or semi-major city, and thus there's a lot of competition. Finally, most rentals will make you sign a one-year lease that turns into a month-to-month rental once the year is finished.
I don't know how any of this will happen. She went AWOL on YouTube for a few weeks, but she might make up for it this month with daily mukbangs and capitalizing on this breakup saga. The only thing I can see happening is that Peetz gives his credit and employment information, and is the only name on the lease, with Chin residing there on the sly.
