Are there primary schools closing due to illness around you guys? I'm not sure how common it is for this to happen around this time of year or if it's also occurring in many areas, since google is region-biased.

Also, about to go to the doc again today for bronchitis/chest symptoms worsening, persistent fever and antibiotics not doing shit. Wish me luck my paranoid brethren.

Points of note:

“My initial question is I need to ask about this, the reports out of China, the cases reported dropped down significantly the last couple of days. I know it’s just two days, but they were in the 3,000 range and now they’re 2,478 and 2,050, that dropped, what if anything do you make of that, and my follow-up question is about you discussed the kits going out to the states, could you say a little more about did kits go to all 50 states and were you expecting that they’d be up and running this week but now it means it’s going to be two weeks from now. Could you help us better understand the impact of what’s going on and what kind of delay it entails, thank you.”

“Dr. Nancy Messonnier: Sure. It’s only two questions this time. Good. So, the Chinese cases dropping down, I’m going to be optimistic that that is a sign that their aggressive efforts have been effective, but I really do think it’s too soon to say that for sure, not having hands on the data ourselves. There is a WHO advanced team in China now, and I’m hopeful that they will have access to the data themselves and be able to validate those findings. It would certainly be reassuring if we were now seeing at least a slowdown of this outbreak in China. So that’s the first question. The second question is a little complicated but what I would say is that of course we hoped that everything would go smoothly as we rushed through this, you know. We moved quickly, that’s appropriate under these circumstances but it’s equally appropriate to do quality control which is what we do, and where these — where this issue was caught, it is part of the normal procedures. Of course, I hoped that this week every state — and every state did receive a kit — every state would be up and running. How long is it going to take? I can’t tell you that for sure because I understand that not every state has completed their verification yet. And it won’t be until we have results from every state that we know which states can continue and which states we need to — we need to get new reagents to. We’re working closely with FDA. Again, we do expect this week that some states may move forward. Other states may need to get additional reagents from CDC, and I don’t have an estimate yet from our laboratory staff as to how long that takes, and when we do, we will definitely be, first, letting the states know and then letting you all know.”

Regarding yesterday news of 15k more confirmed in China, this shows to us all that the CDC has no idea what is going on. Or is not telling us what limited they do know.

I've seen classes close due to flu. Mostly because if almost every kid in class is home sick there's no point in trying to maintain schedule, never a whole school though.

CDC knows about as much as we do. I'd even say less. Outside of the "WHO team" which is probably picking its nose and putting their fingers up their bum while the CCP writes their script for them every source of info they have is either foreign statistics or coming from academia, we've had people posting both of those things here reliably from all over the globe, you really can't get more informed than that so if anything we have the advantage due to sheer number of autists getting info and range of sources which due to language and culture barriers (the unofficial ones) the CDC takes longer to process. Don't expect them to tell you anything that new unless the WHO team slips them shit on the side. And even then it's probably just gonna confirm that the situation is in fact awful.

Take into account that NO ONE actually has or will ever have the real chinese stats. Because they're not testing even close to everyone and even the ones tested are just marked as other shit on the local level, so not even the CCP has those stadistics, their practices have been so bad that they've made it impossible for even themselves to get that info.

There are some horrible normal flus/colds going around right now tbqh - it IS normal flu season, and people are liable to pick them up via plane travel. The main version of it seems to include a horrific hacking cough as well as the usual malaise and fever. I woke up with a thumping headache today myself and it hasn't really gone away despite dosing with paracetamol and caffeine (I have some neuro issue with migraines, but this isn't a migraine) so think I may be coming down with it myself. It's really fucking easy to get paranoid right now though, I totally understand.

So it's been more than 3 weeks since the thread started, which means it has been at least a month since China discovered the virus, and the infection rate in foreign countries hasn't really increased that much, which is weird considering how the virus should be extremely infectious.
I kind of wonder what is the reason for this discrepancy, yeah China is extremely unhygenic but so are other Asian shitholes. My only guesses are that either it's a direct or indirect result of the famous chinese smog, or that there is something like a water reservoir or food supplier that's infected.

If you do come down with something, I'm thinking your best bet is to be in and out of any hospitals or treatment centers either before or after any big crush of incoming cases. Obviously, you want to be needing/getting care at a time when there are plenty of resources available for you.

Try not to panic, because even if we assume that Corona Chan danced for you, you would be in the very first wave of patients. That first wave will be small, and the medical system will still be able to handle it without too much strain. I'd say the math (that we're aware of) is still very much in your favor.

It's really fucking easy to get paranoid right now though, I totally understand.

Truth. I was doing a round of aggressive deep cleaning around the house, and caught a facefull of fuck-off nasty dust while cleaning the vacuum. Bagless vacuums: not even once. God only knows how old and how gnarly some of that dust was. For the next three days I had a nagging headache, slight sore throat and postnasal drip. That's all gone now, but it didn't exactly put my mind at ease.

I don't get why they're saying they aren't sure in regards to the woman / others in Japan. You don't have to have gone to china if there were Chinese tourists in the area who were infected.

Why would they even think to test an 80 year old woman dying with pneumonia or flu like symptoms in an area where it isn't thought to be unless you had an inkling that there was some way she was exposed.

There is an absolute shit of a virus doing the rounds at the moment that starts with sore throat, fever, cough and headache and lingers for weeks. Really high rate of pneumonia and ear infection complications too. It’s ripped through where I work, the kids schools and everything. We were joking the other day that maybe we’ve all had wuflu already.
