Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

It's far too late to be closing borders, transmission is starting to pop up all over the place with no connection to china. The total inability for western nations to mount a meaningful response to this is just staggering to watch, Japan and their cruise ship experiment has been a complete catastrophe for everyone involved and this is just a few thousand people. 25% of their population is over 65 and would likely be hit hardest by a large scale outbreak and their government can't manage one ship.
Thailand somehow having less cases than Italy despite being the number one travel spot from Wuhan is a joke. There are probably already cases being exported from there all around the world going undetected.

The ability for public health services to contact trace everyone who might be affected is going to rapidly fall apart when you have people in Europe moving around from city to city interacting with hundreds if not thousands of people just going about their day. People are going to get infected in massive numbers before they decide to shut down a large number of pubic services and by then it's probably already too late. Maybe they get shut down before there's a steady stream of cases in most major cites but the response so far has been largely reactionary and a few days behind where they should be at the best of times.
No one in public health has the balls to do this-the first case was discovered March 3 and contained by mid May
The government's reaction was swift. Martial law was declared on March 16. Measures included cordons sanitaires of villages and neighborhoods, roadblocks, the prohibition of public meetings, closure of borders and prohibition of all non-essential travel. Hotels were requisitioned for quarantines in which 10,000 people who may have been in contact with the virus were held under guard by the army.

In the process of trying to convince my elderly, stubborn parents to at least stockpile on the meds they need to stay alive while we still can.
It really feels amazing to face what could possibly be a global pandemic, while under the most inept political class/government of the last uhh... fuck it, 200 years. I'd rather be living under the Savoias in a state of absolute monarchy than depend on these clowns.

It's people really that stupid to be shocked that the former passengers of that cruise lied about being sick to get out of there? It's like they don't understand humans. I'm sure not even medieval people were so stupid to believe when someone say "I'm healthy!" to escape quarantine.

Passengers should have been sent to another ship and kept in quarantine before being sent home.

Everyone's fucking this up in ridiculous ways. Even the US now. I don't even know what the fuck getting Americans off of the Diamond Princess was about. CDC was definitely like "no."

It's complete hubris all around.

The elites think they can just fly to another country or a secure bunker if it gets too bad, so they don't have any skin in the game compared to the plebs.

Nothing like fucking over an entire flight of people trying to escape the virus "because our test results hadn't come back yet". If the floating virus incubator didnt give them the virus karen sure did.

Well, Still a month late on the issue of how contagious it is and how it spreads, like, no protective goggles or ear covers... Looks like governments don't even read the fucking internet sometimes... These units are supposed to be coming in contact with contaminated subjects at at least one point or another.

Also "it's just the flu bro but if you cross that border you gonna taste some bullets"

I know it's probably stupid but I'm starting to lose sleep over this, I had plans in summer to take a trip up country to see a friend but now I'm really starting to wonder if there will even be free travel in summer in the US, or if my money will even hold the same value by that point. I AM probably over reacting right now and I'll probably be fine but... man I finally get to the point where I can fend for myself a bit I got a job and shit now the worlds ending... Just my fucking luck.

Lets just hope the theory that it'll mutate into a highly contagious but ineffective sickness comes to fruition or that it really isn't so bad for the average westerner that doesn't breath in pollution that damages your lungs more than pack a day smoking. Was the reinfection causing heart attacks thing ever confirmed to be true or do we not know?

Eh, I think most of the panic is being generated by the fact that the situation is being handled by a buncha different countries in a buncha different ways. It feels like there's no coherent flow of information, and that contributes to the panic. As time goes by hopefully we'll more of a handle on the situation and things will get better. Chin up. You only die an agonizing death due to previously unknown viri once.

Another thing to note. As this virus travels, will be interesting to see how places like Las Vegas deal with it. If you ask me, the casino environment is a great place to spread this virus. Will also be interesting to see how brothels, night clubs, bars, etc. deal with the virus. Could you imagine Las Vegas looking as empty as Wuhan?

We've mentioned how products from China have insinuated themselves throughout our lives. Now we'll be seeing how this virus will affect all aspects of our daily lives.

But one lesson, worldwide, I sure as hell hope and pray that has been learned from this - NEVER put your production/sourcing eggs in one basket. Have at least one more source of materials and one alternative production facility available. China has proven to be a very weak reed to depend on. The other lesson that should now be learned is just-in-time inventory has too many vulnerabilities. Gonna have to spend the money to build warehouses, develop delivery systems from bigger warehouses to smaller warehouses at factories. The only way I can see just-in-time working is if ALL your suppliers are in the same country, or better yet, in your region of the country. It must no longer be taken for granted that supplies/parts/whatever coming from another country will even arrive at all, much less get there in time.

You know, this was going to happen in China, sooner or later. If it hadn't been an outbreak of a virus, it was going to be political turmoil when the next recession hits. Any time you get too far out on a limb, that limb's going to break on you. Now, all over the world, organizations and people are scrambling to make up what's being lost. There will be competition for limited supplies and a limited rate of building/setting up manufacturing facilities.

Question for anyone who might know - how much has air cargo traffic increased these days? Only way to get critical things quickly from one relatively clear country to another. This is where your logisticians earn their pay.

I can guarantee the people running the casinos in Vegas are in full panic mode. That town got fucked hard in 2008 partly from tourism drying up, and they'll do everything they can to keep people flying in.

TBH, it's probably already hit Las Vegas. Macau was shut down early in February, whales are degenerate gambling addicts who will go anywhere to satisfy their urges. MGM will comp anything to keep them in their venues. I have some fun stories about what happens on the corner of Paradise and the Strip...

Re: air cargo travel, there are a few industry groups that track it. I haven't been watching, but I'm sure total volume could be tracked down from public reports. The situation in Los Angeles ports is the biggest indicator, look at information about TRAPAC. They invested a lot in automated terminals and much of the financing came from China. Chinese imports coming through LA are down 13% since September, and they were already down because of tariffs. The biggest commodity that comes in through LA is pharmaceuticals, which is also telling.

Word is TRAPAC is looking to sell their dock operations, there's only a few companies on Earth that could take them on. In all likelihood, they will soon be operated fully by an international buyer.

This demonstrates both short-term cost cutting and a lack of confidence in the stability of supply chains. There's a joke going around with people watching this, you can't have supply chains without China. Which is to say, the orthodoxy is skeptical of the long-term viability of global supply chains, there's a newfound awareness of how vulnerable they are. If not disease, something else will emerge to overwhelm a single country's ability to secure them.
