Lol, wouldn't be shocked. Sean always looked like he's been or is on drugs, but Greg Ayres might've been on stuff. He used to be a smoker until fans begged him to quit, but he gives me druggie vibes, too.

Also that pic of Michelle Specht in Hawaii's making me lol because Hawaii's currently got a visit from Corona-chan. If it continues to spread, she might not be allowed to leave under quarantine, whether she catches it herself or not.

These aren't just characters that popped out recently. These characters have been around since the 1980's, way before any of us were born. And for God's sake, several former and current Funimation voice actors (Caitlin Glass, Laura Bailey, Colleen Clinkenbeard, Brian Palenica, Luci Christian, Cynthia Cranz, Meredith McCoy, even Monica Rial and Jamie Marchi) worked on these characters. Hell, most of the anime above are currently owned by Funimation in the States. In the words of Tim Robbins from Shawshank Redemption, "how could you be so obtuse?".

Should have just put in Miyazaki movies instead of listing them separately. I mean even The Wind Rises had a strong female character in it and it was just a fictional telling of the dude who made the Zero warplane. Also put line in there for Mamuro Hosoda movies too pretty much all his movies have strong female characters even when the theme is not even about women, like the Boy and the Beast. I mean you got Granny from Summer Wars and Hana from Wolf Children being in the OP dept.

The fact that these people think that there aware no strong women in anime while a Miyazaki movie is standing right there is nothing short of pathetic.
 
Lest we forget: Gunbuster is one of the most influential anime of the '80s.

They had to do it. At that time in the 80s it was the norm that a cartoon had 65 episodes in the season. So they stiched together Macross with 2 similar animes and woila Robotech is born.

Yeah, but they don't count because reasons. Just forget that they exist and realize that anime has no strong female characters because the industry is sexist and hates women due to it being flooded with incels.

Yep, those were the rules for syndication (at least, back then - I have no idea what they are now). Carl Macek gets a lot of hate for cobbling-together the Frankenstein monster that is Robotech, but it was actually a genius move that took a LOT of planning and hard work and really took a toll on Macek's health. And I'm sure he had no idea what demon of a company Harmony Gold would transmogrify into.

Also, yes, Misa Hayase is an indelible Macross character, along with Lynn Minmei, Claudia LaSalle, Milia Jenius, and hell even the bridge bunnies.

For more anime "strong female characters", look up the original Bubblegum Crisis, one of the best OAV series to come out of the 80's.

You can add most of the women in Misaki Chronicles/Divergence Eve, Sister Rosette Christopher and her Mother Superior from Chrono Crusade, Mitoko Kusinagi from GITS... PRISS from BUBBLEGUM CRISIS??? HELLO?

I'll make this simple. Pretty much EVERY anime from the late 80s-2000 era has not only strong females, but they are Alpha strong OR BECOME strong by the end (classic Heroes Journey) but are often the lead or the Co-Lead.

It isn't obtuse etc. for these idiots to claim strong females are a recent thing. It's a flat out propaganda lie to 'intersectionalize' Anime.

Edit/Additional anime with Alpha/strong females from 3-4 DECADES AGO:

Cutie Honey - Lead character
Those who Hunt Elves - TWO of the leads.
Godannar - Lead and secondary
Ergo Proxy - Lead
Xenosaga - TWO leads
Witchblade - Lead
The other Masamune animes including Black Magic M66, Appleseed, Dominion Tank Police and Gundress all have either all/Alpha/strong female leads or Heroes Journey progressions for the female characters.
Dirty Pair - TWO leads
Excell Saga - Lead


And my personal favorite, which has probably one of the all time great 'zero to hero' character progressions for a female...Saikano. And any fan of old school Anime that hasn't yet seen it, you really should.

They have TREMENDOUS soundtracks, and even the BGM is amazing. BgC in particular is a sonic treat, as just-about every OAV has a memorable theme track and even great outro songs. And Macross' score and soundtrack is absolutely legendary, with shows like Frontier continuing that tradition (haven't seen Delta yet).

If anyone wants to be absolutely blown away by anime's potential, the late 70s continuing through the 80s are prime places to start.

I hated the reboot. I only watched a few episodes, but it had absolutely none of the charm of the original and all the characters just seemed like bitter assholes. I always wondered if this was due, at least to some extent, to ADV partially funding the series and likely having a degree of creative input.

AD Police Files doesn't have the soundtrack and energy that BgC does, but it's still worth a watch. GitS before GitS was a thing.
