Pope Francis has been forced to cancel a planned Mass in Rome with other clergy after suffering a 'slight illness'.

The Vatican said the 83-year-old pontiff had a 'slight indisposition' that meant he did not attend an event at the St John Lateran basilica in Rome on Thursday morning.

A spokesman said Francis would continue with the rest of his day's business, but preferred to stay within the Vatican rather than travel across the city.

There was no word from the Vatican about the nature of his illness, but the pope was seen coughing and blowing his nose during the Ash Wednesday Mass.

It comes a day after he kissed heads and touched faces as he met with crowds in St Peter's Square, saying he had solidarity with those suffering from coronavirus.

Italy is currently in the grips of a coronavirus outbreak that has seen towns in the north placed on lockdown and travellers from the region spread the infection to previously unaffected areas of Europe.

Rome had three cases, but all three were cured.

Francis had been scheduled to go to the St John Lateran basilica to meet with Rome clergy and celebrate a penitential Mass at the start of Lent.

Francis is bishop of Rome, but delegates the day-to-day running of the archdiocese to a vicar.

The Argentine pope has generally enjoyed good health. He lost part of one lung as a young man because of a respiratory illness, and suffers from sciatica, which makes walking difficult.

Francis has had a busy schedule lately, including his public general audience on Wednesday and the Ash Wednesday service later in the day in a Roman basilica.

Only a few of the 12,000 or so faithful who turned out to see him on Saint Peter's Square were wearing face masks.

But the 83-year-old Francis did not shy away from shaking hands with members of the congregation - and even kissed some of the children present.

Pope Francis is known hugging the faithful or accepting kisses on his cheek or forehead.

However, a year ago he explained his reticence for allowing people to kiss his ring, explaining the practice could spread germs.

In his Ash Wednesday homily marking the beginning of Lent, the pope exhorted the world's 1.3 billion Catholics to 'switch off the television and open the Bible'.

He urged followers to give up trolling people on social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook for Lent.

He said there was too much 'verbal violence' in the world which was 'amplified by the internet'.

Francis added that Lent was 'a time to give up useless words, gossip, rumours, tittle-tattle and speak to God on a first name basis.'

It comes as 50 more cases – including eight children – of COVID-19 have now been confirmed in Italy, taking the toll past 370. Twelve patients have died.

Almost a dozen towns have been quarantined in the northern part of the country in a desperate attempt to contain the worsening coronavirus crisis.

Cases from Italy have now been confirmed in Austria, Croatia, Germany, Switzerland, France, Greece and Spain, as well as Algeria and Brazil.

It comes after thousands of British families jetted to Italy during the half-term break from schools last week and Easter holidays are just five weeks away.

More than 82,000 cases of the COVID-19 – the disease caused by the coronavirus – have been recorded across the world, with the death toll nearing 2,800.

He will have more bills from it too, nice surprise. People won’t go to the doctor because their health plans are shit and it will cost them money they don’t have.

I said people don’t have mandatory sick time as in the government doesn’t mandate paid sick leave like other 1st world countries do. Some states and cities have started to mandate paid sick leave. While many companies offer sick time many don’t and the amount of time offered varies. Most don’t offer 14 days to cover the course of this virus (even that won’t be enough).

I work for a Fortune 500 company, I have 3 paid sick days and I accrue them every month. I don’t get them at the start of the year.

I have 28 days a year for sick and vacation. I can also roll over so many a year. Sounds like you have a crappy job.

I think you'd have a hard time keeping goats without turf for them to graze on, or a fodder growing system like this.

Goats will graze your backyard to dirt and eat every bush and tree they can reach, even climbing on fences and other objects to get to them. They are also escape artists and need a six foot high electrified fence to keep them in because they can wreck most wire fences given time. Our neighbor has them for milk and there's a fuck of a lot to it, including constant breeding to keep milk production going and having several pastures to move them around to so they don't overgraze the turf. It is theorized that one of the reasons the middle east is so barren now is overgrazing by goats in historical times.

We should have cut off travel to China immediately and put those that returned from anywhere in Asia in quarantine camps. It was incredibly selfish to travel to that part of the world, fuck your vacation and travel plans.

I know several people who went to Japan, Singapore, Thailand in the last week or two. So fucking stupid.

I chatted with my regular bank teller 2 days ago and she is blithely going on vacay to Hawaii next week.

I seen someone suggest mom & pop hardware stores.

I have had good luck at 'liquidation' stores for gloves, masks, plastics like tarps, etc. I've found odd stuff at thrift stores too.
The local habitat for humanity thrift here has 3m paper cover all suits for painting and I'm thinking of grabbing a couple just to cover clothing on outdoor excursions if it came to it. If nothing else, I'd be so autistic that people would keep away in droves, will make a great Halloween costume when it all blows over...

Also sorry for double post but for the record: the wearing a mask only if you're sick shit is actually based in science to some degree, but not that much. Thing is:

Masks are not that great at stopping the virus. Most get sick from.the clothes or while taking the mask or due to using the mask for too long or the doorknobs, and that's before counting the lack of goggles to protect the eyes.

And even then masks only give you the advantage in closed spaces or crowds, and get wasted fairly soon. So for most people using masks on most circumstances is fairly dumb. That said, if you know how to use the masks and know you'll be put in a situation where they give you an advantage then go ahead.

As for those that get sick, the ISCIII has indeed told the population to basically do the "save a bullet for yourself" cliche with masks and keep one mask safe to use in case you need to go to the hospital.

So yeah... it has a basis in reality. But daym that's a dumb way to say it.

The current Pope seems to have a shortage of God Given Common Sense. And I say this as a Catholic. He is in many ways an idiot. Ministering to the sick is a noble and god given task. Someone working two shitty jobs with garbage health insurance isn't going to go get tested at the first sign of being sick, and they won't stay home until they're on death's door. The number of people someone cooking beans at a Taco Bell could infect in a single day is staggering. This is very bad news for everyone, including people like you and me who have cushy jobs, easy access to health care, and paid sick leave.

Exactly, some people are so myopic. Our experiences are not the same as the vast majority of workers in the US.

I have 30 days combined of PTO but construction workers, tellers, baristas, etc don’t even have remotely close to that. Same for people who work for small businesses etc, I recognize my benefits are vastly superior to most as is my pay.
