US "The Squad" Megathread - Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Talib Derangement Syndrome

I honestly only know about American politics from what I read on the Internet but since we all love shitting on leftists I figured we'd get a kick out of this. Also it's trending on Twitter so you know it's important.

NEW YORK — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old political novice running on a low budget and an unabashedly liberal platform, upset longtime U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley on Tuesday in the Democratic congressional primary in New York.

The surprise victory by the community organizer in a district that includes parts of the Bronx and Queens came after an energetic, grassroots campaign that mustered more than enough support in a low-turnout race that many had expected to be an easy win for Crowley, a member of the Democratic House leadership.

“The community is ready for a movement of economic and social justice. That is what we tried to deliver,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who has never held elected office and whose candidacy attracted only modest media attention.

She told The Associated Press after her victory that she didn’t have enough money to do polling in the race, but felt in her gut that her message had a chance to connect.

“I live in this community. I organized in this community. I felt the absence of the incumbent. I knew he didn’t have a strong presence,” she said.

Crowley has been in Congress since 1999 and hadn’t faced an opponent in a primary election since 2004, when Ocasio-Cortez was just a teenager. He was considered a candidate to become the next House speaker if Democrats win the majority.

“It’s not about me,” Crowley, 56, told his supporters at a campaign party following his loss. “It’s about America. I want nothing but the best for Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. I want her to be victorious.”

He later played guitar with a band at the election night gathering, and dedicated the first song, Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” to Ocasio-Cortez.

Crowley represents New York’s 14th Congressional District, where he is also the leader of the Queens Democratic party.

Ocasio-Cortez was outspent by an 18-1 margin during her race but won the endorsement of some influential groups on the party’s far left, including MoveOn, as well as the actress Cynthia Nixon, who is running for governor. She defeated Crowley by 15 percentage points.

Born in the Bronx to a mother from Puerto Rico and a father who died in 2008, Ocasio-Cortez said she decided to challenge Crowley to push a more progressive stance on economic and other issues.

She attended Boston University, where she earned degrees in economics and international relations, and also spent time working in the office of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy.

After graduating, she returned to the Bronx where she became a community organizer. In the 2016 presidential campaign she worked for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Among her issues is expanding the Medicare program to people of all ages and abolishing Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. She recently went to Tornillo, Texas, to protest against policies that have separated parents from their children at the southern U.S. border.

Ocasio-Cortez gained some internet attention for a campaign video called “The Courage to Change,” a two-minute spot for which she wrote the script and featured footage from her own home.

Crowley is chair of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-highest ranking position in Democratic leadership in that chamber of Congress.

His loss drew the attention of President Donald Trump.

“Wow! Big Trump Hater Congressman Joe Crowley, who many expected was going to take Nancy Pelosi’s place, just LOST his primary election. In other words, he’s out! That is a big one that nobody saw happening. Perhaps he should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!” he tweeted.

The Republican candidate for the office, Anthony Pappas, is running unopposed and had no primary. Pappas teaches economics at St. John’s University.

She was a Bernie campaigner, is supported by BLM, and wants to abolish Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Also this was in a solid-blue Congressional District so you know she's a shoo-in for next Congress.

But hey, we did get to see Trump laugh at Crowley on Twitter.

I'm fine having Somalis. I'm just tired of the disingenuous attitude as if they are the only minority we have here. We have tons of Mexicans too. We also have tons of Hmong that have been here since right after Vietnam ended, us and Michigan are like the only parts of the country that have a significant Hmong population. But they're not muslim, so woke media doesn't score any points by manufacturing bigotry against them. Ilhan Omar's wikipedia page is a mile long because she tweets "blah blah blah Trump blah blah Islamophobia" every other day. If we had a Hmong woman legislator here wikipedia wouldn't have more than two sentences about her.

Atlanta and surrounding areas also has a huge Hmong population, possibly rivaling even yours.

No one likes somalis, that's why they're held up on a pedastal. They are the epitome of the low-IQ eats-their-own aids-infested violent african immigrants. Dems love to put them in the front of their immigration crap because they know people will always sperg over somalians since as a population, they ruin everything they touch.

AOC's Green New Deal would cost $75K per household in first year: Study

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s proposed Green New Deal would cost the average household nearly $75,000 in the first year in key swing states, driving the U.S. economy into a “steep economic depression,” according to a study released Wednesday.

The study, conducted by the free-market Competitive Enterprise Institute, Power the Future, and the Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty, examined the ambitious House and Senate resolution’s projected impact on energy costs in 11 states.

In the first year, the Green New Deal would cost a typical household a minimum of $74,287, with annual costs falling to $47,755 per household in the next four years, excluding Alaska, and $40,706 each year thereafter.

That's a lot of money that people just don't have. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez expects each American household to pony up that much money in addition to their existing expenses. I feel like this was too much even for the Democrats, explaining why this ridiculous farce got zero yes votes.

The HIV outbreak in Indiana began back in 2011, and Mike Pence wasn't elected until 2012. Mike Pence is not responsible for people injecting drugs into their own arms using dirty needles and contracting HIV as a result. Hilariously, you can even find articles about this in Yale titled, "How the HIV outbreak in Indiana could have been prevented."

"An HIV outbreak among people who inject drugs in Indiana from 2011 to 2015 could have been avoided if the state’s top health and elected officials had acted sooner on warnings, a new study by the Yale School of Public Health finds. The study, published in The Lancet HIV, found that the number of HIV infections could have been drastically reduced in Indiana’s Scott County and that the state’s belated response in March 2015 came after the peak of the epidemic, likely having little effect on its trajectory."

If the state's response had no affect on the outbreak, then why did the outbreak go away? Did the problem just solve itself? Did crack addicts just mysteriously stop injecting drugs? Moreover, do you know how many people we're talking about being affected by this outbreak in the entire county they're talking about? It was a total of 215. Indiana has a population of 6.5 million.

California had an amazing plan to handle this same problem, such as needle exchanges and sending people to Planned Parenthood to get tested for HIV. California loves to parade around their falling rate of HIV infections, but if you actually look at the numbers a little deeper, you can see an inherent problem: the HIV rate of drug users is continuing to rise, even with California doing everything they can short of mandating government-sponsored meth-injection.

The spread of this 'outbreak' had nothing to do with Pence's response and everything to do with the fact that drug users are insane and irresponsible and are more concerned with slamming the next needle into their arm than they are with considering any of the risks involved, first. The problem was solved and it only afflicted 0.003% of Indiana in the county hit the hardest by this 'outbreak. I struggle to see how this was a failure.

Pretty rich that AOC and Omar are calling anyone else incompetent.

Reddit is jerking off to her non-response.

What an arrogant cunt. Can you imagine the response if anyone else fellate themselves like this?

Bonus: people in the comments trying to twist Cruz's words as an attack on her bartending history.

Oh sweet, this is gonna' keep going. I was really hoping it wouldn't just be a quick snipe with no response.

The people in that Reddit chain are pretty funny, though. "Haha Cruz isn't even making any sense, what's the point of his stupid questions?" It's called bait. Because so many people in her support base are lunatics who abhor basic science, she can't answer these questions without throwing the switch to the rage mob. There's no "safe" way for her to answer any of them.

Wait is she talking about this?

this is some kind of high-school project on worms.
I'd assume it must have been a high quality high school project, since it got second place on some science fair, but I don't think this makes her an expert on how to handle epidemics

The years... have somehow been kind to her? How does someone glow up in college and then glow down before the big 3-0, but not as down as pre-glow up?

Her doubling down on somehow having an education is a riot.

Having a piece of paper or a certificate saying that you went to a University or got an education. It just means you remembered the material for the right test and exam at the right time. There's plenty of smart and brilliant high school dropouts and plenty of dull and dumb PhDs out there, as well as many individuals in between. AOC is just another example of an educated moron.

To be fair, there are professors that literally will give you no less than a B if you show up (Social Science and Humanities are known for it where I went), it also doesn't help that many professors recycle or reuse the same tests, assignments, and quizzes to the point that many students upload them on sites like CourseHero and Quizlet.

Her education she's so proud of should obligate her to answer Cruz's questions. If a fancy science education is an excuse not to answer such questions then what worth does it have in the first place?
