Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

All the deaths so far have been in a solid blue state.

All modern Mega-Cities are just petri dishes waiting to happen. This is generally why cities are kept to a certain level of cleanliness, trash is collected, streets and windows are washed as are the people, sewerage services are maintained etc, etc etc.

Now take a few of those away, like Oh. I dunno, a certain retarded Bay Area and there's every possibility you'd turn the city into a perfected breeding ground for it to tear through.

But this is a country which still had plague outbreaks in the 1920s...

So can we do it with this particular virus or are they too recent a discovery? Read a lot about variolation and Jenner, fascinating how people knew what to do even if they weren't sure why it worked exactly.
Yes we can, in principle, but exactly how is not easy. SARS vaccine was being worked on but all the research was squished after the outbreak was contained. What was happening with the SARS vaccine was that animals vaccinated then challenged (exposed to the virus) actually got much sicker than unvaccinated animals. The vaccine was causing some kind of priming event which exacerbated subsequent infection. This isn’t unheard of - I think the dengue vaccine has some similar issues. This is why rushing a vaccine through is a bad idea. There’s an mRNA vaccine in progress which looks promising
If exposure to a virus helps the organism develop natural immunity, then what's up with reports (rumors? I can't pinpoint a specific case right now, but I've seen people saying these things multiple times in this thread) of coronavirus patients getting reinfected soon after recovery and suffering cardiac complications?
We don’t know is the short answer. Some corona viruses can reinfect, some people don’t raise good antibodies to them. But we don’t know exactly what has happened in these cases. Some possibilities:
-tests inaccurate (happens, RNA is hard to work with.)
- viral titre dropped too low to detect but was not cleared
- reinfection with a strain sufficiently different that it wasn’t recognised (unlikely.)
- person did not raise sufficient antibodies or was too soon to have the peak of the antibody response (there’s something called the innate immune system which isn’t antibodies, it’s interferons and complement etc. That kicks in first and antibodies take time to be made, sometimes a few weeks to hit high levels) Theres some hints that reinfection With Coronavirus may not elicit the same kind of innate response than initial infection but it’s all very preliminary as it was done on SARS And all the funding got pulled https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3454321/
Another possibility is that the virus can become latent or dormant somehow.
But...we just don’t know. As for the cardiac symptoms, that can happen with acute viral infection - flu can lead to damage of the heart and pericardium. A mate of mine ended up in ICU for weeks with heart problems after flu when he was in his twenties. Fit and no other health issues, just bad luck.

Or you could

Cut down some of the red tape, especially around the part where, terminally ill people can't volunteer to be tested on with drugs in development. It could cut down costs and time significantly.

Allow my inner lolbert to offset your communist suggestion, just throw IP and patent law out the window. To hell with patent law, for everything.

Terminally ill people can do that already. It's not common and not recommended, but there are laws to allow them to access experimental meds related to their disease. Also, fuck IP law. I'm containing myself to avoid going into a days long political autistinc rant but let me just say fuck IP law and everything related to it. The corporation worshippers in the thread have no idea just how much damage that does to science. The state has its solid issues and is certainly no panacea, go ask the commies how that went, but IP law and vulture capitalism have also caused ample issues, they NEED checking and needed so for decades now. Specially when it comes to pharma.

Edit: oh guck it. Here's a fun fact for you: big farmaceuticals actually do little to no research whatsoever. They just buy shit the indies and pubmic universities research then make the pills, and most don't actually care if the pills work. Which is why we got shit like Adyi being pushed through. Protip: you know all those atidepression pills that aren't actual antidepressants but just supplements? NEVER BUY THOSE. Actually just avoid all supplements like the plague unless you know them well.

All the deaths so far have been in a solid blue state.
Dems stand a lot more to loose here. They've been importing votes like crazy and now their states have far higher criminality and far lesser hygiene. Ret homes will feel it about as much as the flu but if it truly sticks to surfaces the dem voting base can get fucked in many supposedly solid blue states.

Of course this is thinking you doomers are right about death tolls. Which you're freaking not. It's not gonna be bad enough to alter the elections by sheer deaths, only by perception shifts.

FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK

Okay, so the 72 year old guy from Austria who's in critical condition is a lawyer, we still don't know how he contracted the virus.

Apparently authorities didn't see the need to test his employees at his office (it's a big prestigious law firm in Vienna) - so they ordered PRIVATE TESTING in a German lab. Well, surprise, 3 of the employees are infected (one of them the woman who started her apprenticeship at court).

Well, now they announced in which law firm this happened - it's Wolf Theiss

"On Thursday, February 27th, 2020, we were informed about the coronavirus infection of a member of our partnership. We immediately initiated all the necessary steps to protect employees, clients, courts and business partners based on an action plan.
These measures include: the establishment of a crisis team, immediate contact and ongoing close coordination with the health authorities AGES (Austrian Agency for Health and Food Security) and MA 15, the testing of all Wolf Theiss employees in Vienna, the establishment of a medical hotline to a leading infectiologist.
The virus test started within 24 hours after our partner's illness became known. We did it on our own initiative and at our own expense to gain certainty. The test was carried out by a German virological institute.
Last Friday, over 200 employees were tested in a first test wave, this Monday another 80 employees. Of the people examined so far, over 200 people tested negative and three tested positive. These three employees showed no symptoms of an illness and were immediately placed in quarantine at home. They are currently undergoing an official confirmation test.
Those employees whose results are expected later today are in the home office and avoid contact with employees, clients and courts until the results are available.
Due to the immediate, continuous testing of our employees, Wolf Theiss is currently the only Austrian company to ensure that client, court and employee contacts are only made through negatively tested employees. "

FML, because LAST MONDAY we had one of their lawyers at my office for a meeting (including my boss and about 5 other colleagues). I even shook the (maybe) plague-carrying fuckers hand (:_(:cryblood:

Tomorrow morning I will try to find out if this lawyer was already tested (Data Protection Act be damned).

Kiwis, I may need your thoughts and prayers :stress:

At this point I'm personally more interested in possible Census effects, depending on how much hype about how Drumpf is fucking up this dangerous pandemic.
Will this lower response rate in high population density zones (owned by a particular party)?

Internal memo from the US office of veteran's affairs on COVID-19. Although there is a designated building called out in the memo, it is currently empty.

Okay, update - there is now a confirmed COVID-19 case at the Palo Alto VA Hospital. Patient was transferred from a hospital nearby yesterday at noon. Sections of the parking lot were blocked off when they brought him in on the stretcher. They didn't bother telling anyone, though.

The hospital is full of old veterans and several providers have been potentially exposed.

I'd suggest you all keep your eyes on the immediate area. I'll continue to post updates as they come in.

Edit: update - alert was sent out, patient is in fact a veteran. Still unclear if building 7h is to be used as quarantine for entire area or just veteran patients.

Patient might be a veteran (given that this is a VA hospital) but also might not be due to the CDC conscripting parts of the VA into coronavirus prevention and treatment.

Dear god, not those morons at the V.A. by the time they are done filling out paperwork the poor coofers will have been in the grave for a year.

OH FOR FUCK'S SAKE
They're just going to send him home after the exams? Really?
Edit:
"He's okay, he can go home :)"

(probably dumb) Question about travel bans: right now the China travel advisory warning in the States is at level 4, "do not travel." Does that mean airlines should not be/are not selling tickets to China anymore, etc.? Or that the gov't is simply banning the public from travelling there?

I ask bc my professor cancelled class today as many teachers do right before Spring break and I'm wondering if she would be going there to visit family lolll

8th confirmed case in BC (archive). I'm hoping that our favourite exceptional Yaniv catches Corona-chan next.

ETA: I should mention that Costco has started swabbing down all carts with alcohol wipes at the entrance because "it's flu season". 25kg bags of rice have been hard to get a hold of, but that's probably because the Chinese fags have been raiding Costco every weekend.

ETA 2: the confirmed cases in BC has now been bumped to 12.

OK, catching up. Today was more normal except for watching a group of people at work discuss this shit for the first time, how they can't find hand sanitizer or certain other things. I went by the branch of my bank in a grocery store to pay a bill,etc.. The line is crazy, so I think fuck it, I can check the ATM, get my balance and do this shit online later. There is a line for the ATM. I'm watching the people around me and they are drawing out cash like mad. The window people are getting bills back and the crazy old lady trembling in front of the ATM is drawing out money on multiple cards. Yo dude, I just wanted to check my damn balance a give some peeps their treefiddy. I'm a certifiable nut, but even I have faith that the electronic banking system isn't going anywhere soon.

Had to pick some paper up for a project. Even Fucking Office Depot is sold out of sanitizer and cleaning products. I can just imagine the desperation of anyone who would pay five bucks and change for something they could have bought for a couple of bucks at a grocery or a dollar at the dollar store had they paid attention. Invest in sanitizer futures, I guess.

It has been quite the illustration of prep vs. panic and the results of manipulation of this information by the media of pretty much all persuasions.

ETA: Evergreen health is the hospital end of a Puget Sound HMO called "GroupHealth" in the literature, but knowm as "GroupDeath" to the locals. Why aren't these positive cases being sent to the UW hospital group which has the specialists, equipment and research capability to make a difference with this novel emerging disease?

That VA hospital is very close to the Stanford Campus and is almost invariably (over)staffed by a lot of Stanford residents of various specialties. It's not uncommon for teaching hospitals to pair with a local VA hospital. VA hospitals and ghetto hospitals are unfortunately good places for residents to get experience, especially of the "huh, you don't see this everyday" category. Hence why the Navy sends Corpsman to that one that one Level III trauma center in Chi-congo to train.

South America, chile
Also first confirmed case

>Male
>Age 33

We are fucked.

Waiting for more info expect edits.

Anyone can catch it. It's a matter of how many survive it and the symptoms. 33 year old probably has fairly good odds of recovery.

Unless the we're fucked is referring to Chile having poor health care.

The missed the ones in Florida, Chile, and Romania. Quality fucking journalism there lou.

Even whatshisname Khaminei has to wear gloves.

His advisor's dead.

He was 71 and probably smoked enough Hashish to make Marlboro jealous he wasn't a customer. One more old person dead.

Until this thing starts liquidating 25-45 year olds so far we are seeing elderly, infirm, and already sick people dying. If anything hospitals are going to be real busy and then realllllll quiet.

I'm starting to actually hate Bill Mitchell. How many people actually think like this? Are people seriously starting to trust the CCP because of the virus? Didn't his God-Emperor campaign on "China bad"?

Just speculating but probably letting those cases from the nursing home die because they have other long term health issues and don’t want to waste resources on them because corona will get them anyway. The damn is breaking, it’s picking up speed now but it’s only coming in drips and drabs thanks to the horrible leadership from our government and CDC. The lot of them should be fired.
