They don't understand that gay people exist outside of Tumblr and Twitter spheres and don't constantly feel the need to state how gay they are. Plenty of gay people have actual personalities, shocking for an SJW to find out, I know.

Forgive me if I’m being dense but how is this any better? Because if the only clue to a character’s sexuality is a small accessory and nothing else, I’d argue that’s just as performative for representation...of course arguing which kid movie has better gay rep is exceptional to begin with.

As I've mentioned before on this, you have to remember that a lot of these Millennial SJWs are in fact literally the children of the Boomer fundies of the 80s Satanic Panic. All that happened was by the time they went through their Teenage Rebellion Stage, they ran as far to the left of the spectrum as they could to spite their parents yet they still inherited their shrill, harridan, unlikable personalities.

If right-wingers like it, it's a right-wing dog whistle, because the struggle is cultural. Since modern culture is in essence left-wing, identifying with relics of the past like nature or paintings proves that you fundamentally dislike the left, which makes you right wing. Never mind that most of these hipsters ape 50s pin-up fashion and probably went to Steampunk conventions, when they do it it's "subverting" those old tropes.
People who even care what avatars people have bring it up in convenient ad hominems.
Remember, these people will find anything to whine about for those Twitter points. Sometimes I actually wonder if some of these people really believe in half the shit they preach, but then again most of them were reared by boomers so we already know they'll exhibit their qualites and bitch like them.
It's as @Private Pyle said, it's nothing more than ad hominem. The way I see it, if they have to resort to attacking your avatar of all things, that means they don't really have any argument to back up their beliefs.
