It's honestly this for a lot of areas. People hate when their perception of the world gets smashed or even slowly eroded, so you'll see a lot of mentions of 'wanting the world to end'. It's much akin to the fools who cried for the world to end because Bush Junior was considered the worst president ever at the time, they just update who the boogieman is that is bringing it on.
Covid's not going to kill the world or be egg on the face of the evil orange man as they wish. It won't stop them from trying to spread misinformation or vitriol.
I think it's this weird amalgamation of both, they don't WANT the world to end. But they're convinced it WILL end, sooner than later, because "proof" of it is all around them in the form of losing social power , the rise (without any reason!) of "Nazis", and the unpopularity of "basic morals" (i.e. progressiveism and IDPOL) Since they are from a generation that can neither problem solve nor buck it up and "adult" through it, they easily give in to despair when the smallest thing goes not to plan.
And when something with the apparent potential to do it VERY SOON like the Y2K bug, or climate change or nuclear war or corona-chan comes along, and coincides with an ebb in their perceived power, they want it to end QUICKER so that they can have the satisfaction of watching their enemies finally get theirs AND pin it on their sociopolitical tormentors..... thus being able to breathe their last knowing they WERE on the right side of history..... no matter what the now-dead meanies online said!
Corona won't end the world like Black Plague 2.0, but it has the potential to send a noticeable amount of people to an early grave. I really worry about 3rd world impact because of poor-grade sanitation allowing even a "weak" virus that can be killed by hand sanitizer to rampage through garbage heaps and open sewers....
