This is the most important news conference of his Presidency, probably of the last 20 years.
Trump is announcing some things that are important to anyone concerned about Corona Virus in North America:
- He's asking Congress for Federal Sick Leave for every American. This will allow people to stay home if they are sick. From what I hear, it will be up to 28 days per worker annually.
- He's going to ask for a break on payroll taxes. Employers will not be so trigger happy with layoffs during this period. This is chiefly going to benefit airlines.
These 2 measures would dramatically transform America's workforce. Betting if they get put in place, they stay in place and businesses use this to offload all their PTO.
The Surgeon General was there. He looks like Young Mike Tyson, sounded like him at times. Found that reassuring.
The Director of the CDC announced they are distributing a prevention guide. Have not seen it yet, but glad to know they are messaging about prevention.
These are the specific steps every American is being advised to follow during this period:
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
- Stay home when you are sick.
- Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
- Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask.
- CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19.
- Facemasks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others. The use of facemasks is also crucial for health workers and people who are taking care of someone in close settings (at home or in a health care facility).
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
- If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
There was a little drama, it was nuanced. Trump was asked if he has been tested. Great question from reporters, he already looked pissed and just walked out of the room. If he said yes, the headlines tomorrow would read TRUMP IS GETTING TESTED WHILE AMERICANS WAIT. If he said no, the headlines tomorrow would read TRUMP IS THREATENING NATIONAL SECURITY BY NOT GETTING TESTED.
The whole time I was thinking, how much blame should we put on the partisan media for where we are right now? How much of this is happening because people are so tuned out from overdosing on bullshit the past 3 years we didn't demand draconian measures and closed borders? Millions are going to die because the public has been kept ignorant of the threat and focused on political outcomes they'd like to see.
Trump has had some challenging times during his Presidency, right now he's dealing with the stock market, the bond market, a deadly plague, oil price wars that threaten our nation's energy independence, and the continued threat of Necromancer Pelosi's witchcraft. He looked pretty serious marching out of the presser while the White House Press Corps sounded like kindergarteners wanting to know about the morning snacks. This was the first time I thought he looked like the only adult in the room.
