Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

This is less a problem in america because our sewer systems are powerful modern systems designed to withstand the soaponic tidal surge of a million and more Chinese takeout joints as well as the resulting shitstorms.
There are no sewage risers in American apartment buildings? Good to know.

Seriously though, if you're using improvised toilet paper, get a bin with a lid and put it in there when you're done.

This is the most important news conference of his Presidency, probably of the last 20 years.

Trump is announcing some things that are important to anyone concerned about Corona Virus in North America:

- He's asking Congress for Federal Sick Leave for every American. This will allow people to stay home if they are sick. From what I hear, it will be up to 28 days per worker annually.

- He's going to ask for a break on payroll taxes. Employers will not be so trigger happy with layoffs during this period. This is chiefly going to benefit airlines.

These 2 measures would dramatically transform America's workforce. Betting if they get put in place, they stay in place and businesses use this to offload all their PTO.

The Surgeon General was there. He looks like Young Mike Tyson, sounded like him at times. Found that reassuring.

The Director of the CDC announced they are distributing a prevention guide. Have not seen it yet, but glad to know they are messaging about prevention.

These are the specific steps every American is being advised to follow during this period:
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
  • Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask.
    • CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19.
    • Facemasks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others. The use of facemasks is also crucial for health workers and people who are taking care of someone in close settings (at home or in a health care facility).
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
    • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
There was a little drama, it was nuanced. Trump was asked if he has been tested. Great question from reporters, he already looked pissed and just walked out of the room. If he said yes, the headlines tomorrow would read TRUMP IS GETTING TESTED WHILE AMERICANS WAIT. If he said no, the headlines tomorrow would read TRUMP IS THREATENING NATIONAL SECURITY BY NOT GETTING TESTED.

The whole time I was thinking, how much blame should we put on the partisan media for where we are right now? How much of this is happening because people are so tuned out from overdosing on bullshit the past 3 years we didn't demand draconian measures and closed borders? Millions are going to die because the public has been kept ignorant of the threat and focused on political outcomes they'd like to see.

Trump has had some challenging times during his Presidency, right now he's dealing with the stock market, the bond market, a deadly plague, oil price wars that threaten our nation's energy independence, and the continued threat of Necromancer Pelosi's witchcraft. He looked pretty serious marching out of the presser while the White House Press Corps sounded like kindergarteners wanting to know about the morning snacks. This was the first time I thought he looked like the only adult in the room.

Something that we have stated.. well almost 2 months ago about what to do about this virus. Kind of proves my point... Does it not? We here on Kiwi Farms are way ahead of the curve in this subject matter. Continue to collect data so we can logically deduct the information and give out our logical conclusions.

So far we have been right on this subject and we should be proud on how we are handling this but we can only be as successful as calmly tackle the problem. And do this without panicking. I have stated before we have to tackle this as any flu and for the majority of us we are going to be just fine. It is when people begin to panic is when things start going to the shitter.

Again we are doing fine and things in the end are going to be overall okay to those that use their common sense.

Again I'll keep saying what I have been saying every week or two to make sure newcommers on this posting get the real news on how to take care of themselves.

All these twats buying insane amounts of bog roll (and I'm thinking now I bet some people are doing this so they can try and sell it at vulturous prices to the desperate)
You're a Brit, you should know the appropriate action is to agree to buy, meet up, stab them and steal their loo roll.
Am I weird for thinking this looks cute?

@Vitriol poked his beaked head back into the Farms when this outbreak started to get serious. Maybe he was trying to warn us.

When this thing first kicked off in China, I thought that by the time it got to my vicinity, much of the uncertainty about the virulence and incubation period and mortality/morbidity rate and general risk to the public would have been figured out. But it feels like we are still very much in the dark about this thing, especially on a more local level. There is one case not so far from me, but the public health response has been very muted. People are vacillating about canceling or continuing with public events, schools still open, the instructions from the local government and hospitals are just recycled flu season guidelines. Earlier today, I bumped into the head of the pathology lab at one of the larger, better equipped local hospitals, and he says they are way more worried about influenza A and B than covid-19. The only special preparation they've done in his department is require everyone to review the CDC's recommended protocols for containing this outbreak in the hospital setting.
In my experience people who work at hospitals have no real understanding of what COVID-19 is and what makes it challenging/worrying. I just think priorities are different. Health care professionals are more concerned with whatever they're currently dealing with (and in your example presumably during this time of year these labs are mostly running flu tests day in and day out), whereas researchers have to figure out "how can it be stopped?" which quickly becomes bleak when you realize that we have plans and vaccine pipelines for things like the flu, while we have nothing for coronavirus. Nurses and lab techs and such esp also generally have very little interaction with current literature from what I've seen. All of the females in my family are nurses and they don't really know shit about any cutting edge science/biology. I love them, I just wish health care professionals weren't viewed as a source of knowledge on this sort of thing. I think they're just opinionated based on what they see in the media or something.

IVORY SOAP
lol 99.44% pure gay should have lava of fels napthaed that shit if you really gave a fuck
Another thing they could do is if the country needs to go on lockdown for a month the government can order all mortgages and rents to not be paid that month and allow property owners and banks to use it as a tax write off or even a credit on next years taxes. That would be far more useful then just cutting everyone a check.
yeah and some beers and maybe a pony or something too

Not tubing diabetics, even if they are young?

Well...shit. Hopefully that is at least a bit hysterical.

Slight powerlevel: I work at a nursing home and the Board of Health for my state just issued an order that all assisted living facilities can no longer have visitors until further notice.

It makes sense, but hearing the announcement over loudspeaker was pretty spooky. It’s also quite sad, since many of the residents look forward to seeing their kids and grandkids. :(

Havn't the outbreaks in nursing homes all been from staff who had the virus bringing it in though? I get them doing this as a hopeful pre-caution but if the staff get infected it doesn't help much.

Agree with the poster who talked about Skype. It might not be exactly the same but at least having a video call would be better than nothing.

I'm starting to get really hesitant about trusting anything that's said on twitter about this. Being a public platform where everything is fueled by likes and retweets there's going to be a lot of people who see an opportunity to 'make a name for themselves' in the face of a crisis. 'From a well respected friend' in a area where everything is running at 200% supposed percent they have the time to sit down and have a friendly chat with non-family that said friend can cheerily pass along on a twitter thread to spread the world is ending message? Pretty convenient.

The world knows this is dangerous. There's not much you can do at this point except take the recommended precautions, it's out there and it's not something we can push a button and stop at this point- and press for the countries we live in to stop as much travel and quarantine as required. Pushing commentary like this out is dangerous because all it does is cause panic and shortages. There's nothing being added to the conversation that hasn't been talked about before except that undercurrent of you don't know how bad it is and trying to legitimize it by adding it's from a doctor.

We all knew it was gonna hit the United States hard in the beginning of the month and we were right about it.

The US has a population of approx 327.2 million. Hitting it hard would be a million or more people sick, there's 605 people who have/had it. Realistically even if all 600 of them dropped dead at this point that's a drop in the bucket of the population. It terrible for the people who have it and those who've died / their families and there is a great risk for spreading but I don't think you can call it hitting hard just yet.

This thread needs a toilet paper rating.

605* that have been tested. The CDC has been resisting, HARD any widespread state level testing and is dragging their fucking heels in getting results. Everyone can see it, the actual number is WAY higher, the government just doesnt feel like admitting it fucked up royal. US cases started surging up shortly after italy, yet in the timespan italy has gone from 113 sick to north of 7000 9000 with a 5% fatality rate, the US has only gotten to 600, spread all over the country, with only a handful of deaths?

Bullshit. China was lying out their ass about infectious rates, and still are, and so in the US.

That sounds eerily like some of the doctor reactions we saw in the Wuhan hospitals. How good are Italy's hospitals, again?

I agree they're under-reporting but this just butts back to the issue brought up time and again in the thread. It's very likely that large swathes of people are not that sick from it if it's already in the wild and spreading. You can lie about your numbers all you want but you can't easily cover-up massive amounts of death or near-death all over the country, especially when we live in the era of social media to the point some people in America consider their phone an extension of their arm.
