Swedish prime minister Löfven claims Sweden has the "economic muscles that are necessary to tackle the corona virus". I'm going to have to press X to doubt considering how much the government and the public health agency have been flip-flopping on the issue http://archive.is/wip/yFCtW
Löfven: We have what it takes to tackle the consequences of the virus
During Wednesday night, Prime Minister Stefan Löfven held a press conference on how Sweden should continue to tackle the virus:
"Sweden has the economic muscle needed to meet the consequences of the infection".
Shortly after 20, the government held a press conference at Rosenbad. Prime Minister Stefan Löfven began by lamenting the grief of the relatives of the person who is today reported dead as a result of the corona.

- The risk of transmission is very high. We have a very serious situation, ”Stefan Löfven said, announcing that society's resources will be mobilized.

The Prime Minister emphasizes that money should not and will not be a problem to fight the spread of infection.

- Thanks to the fact that we are orderly and clear in our public finances, Sweden has the financial muscle needed to meet the consequences of the infection.

He also wanted to raise his appreciation for all the parliamentary parties that stand behind the work against the corona, and let differences between parties.

"We all ask to take responsibility"
Stefan Löfven ended his part of the press conference by expressing empathy for all those who are worried.

- Stay up-to-date, follow the advice of the authorities, for symptoms of respiratory infection - do not go to work, do your hand hygiene. We ask all citizens to take responsibility, not for themselves but also for Sweden, appealing to Stefan Löfven.

The police can dissolve gatherings
During the day, the government announced that they are following the recommendation of the Public Health Authority to limit meetings with more than 500 people.

"The government is ready to make the decisions needed to stop the spread of infection," Stefan Löfven said.

Justice Minister Morgan Johansson emphasizes that this is the first time ever in Swedish history that a government uses the opportunity to impose a ban, which is an exception to, among other things, the right of demonstration.

The ban will take effect after midnight.

- The police have the power to dissolve such a meeting if it contravenes the regulation, clarified Morgan Johansson.

Anyone who violates the ban on gatherings risks fines or imprisonment for up to six months.

Okay, guess it's time to once again point out that the sky isn't falling, and isn't going to fall.

First, let's take a look at some numbers/data.

Latest Johns Hopkins WuFlu scorecard:

You can read the numbers as easily as I can. But even if the Chinese were telling the truth, nearly two-thirds of all cases worldwide are in just one country. Leaves about 44,000 for the rest of the world. Of that 44,000, over 33,000 are in just five countries. So that means the rest of the world has about 11,000 cases so far. About 4600 dead so far. Once again, nearly two-thirds of them are in just one country. Leaves about 1500. Of those 1500, 1,181 are in just two countries. Think about that.

Now, why don't we look at something that is widespread throughout the USA and has hospitalized and killed a quantum leap more people than the WuFlu - the "regular" flu.

Here's a story from a couple of weeks ago.

https://abcnews.go.com/Health/1300-people-died-flu-year/story?id=67754182

Here's the latest CDC flu update I could find. Lots of info here.

We seem to be close to an epidemic of the "regular" flu, but nobody's been going apeshit about it. And in contrast to the WuFlu, the "regular" flu kills people of all ages, including babies. All there on the webpage. Check it out.

Now, from what I have seen and have learned, the WuFlu seems to have a low mortality rate. Many of those who have died of the WuFlu are elderly people with health issues and those with compromised immune systems. Not too many young, otherwise healthy people dying of the flu, far as I can tell.

I need to ask this. Please tell me if I am incorrect. We see all manner of precautions taken to prevent the spread of the WuFlu, but before the WuFlu showed up you didn't hear of any similar precautions taken against the "regular" flu, which so far has been far more widespread and far more deadly than the WuFlu? Why is that? Why shouldn't people have been taking those precautions against the "regular" flu, which kills people of all ages?

Shouldn't the mainstream media have gone apeshit about the widespead illnesses, hospitalizations, and deaths from the "regular" flu? Why haven't they? Why didn't they? I'm just looking at statistics from Johns Hopkins University, which seems pretty reputable, and the CDC, who has been dealing with the "regular" flu for as long as that agency;s been around.

And don't feel like you need to take my word re the statistics - check them out yourself.

Keep an eye on the statistics. They tell a dispassionate story of what's really going on. And ask yourself why people are going nuts about something that sickens and kills so few, and seem to take for granted something that sickens many many more and kills so many.

Keep things in perspective, people. If you have been reading this thread, you likely know how vulnerable you are to the WuFlu. I'm apparently in the highest-risk group but am not sweating it. Am concerned about a couple of relatives older and in worse health than myself. But most KFers - nada.

Said this before, saying it again. Do not take counsel of your fears. Read the statistics before letting the anus clench from an individual story not supported by statistics. I have provided statistics, some in near-real time. Be prudent, cover sneezes/coughs, wash hands, but you should be doing this anyway, correct?

Be strong, for those you love, and for those who love you. You need them and they need you. And you do nobody, including yourself, any good whatsoever by acting as if we're all going to die tomorrow.

Pretty much all mainstream Universities in the UK teach engineering. Most of the Swansea students i know that are asian are doing humanities. Swansea isn't considered a particularly 'engineering' focused uni, or in the top ranked unis at all.
In Oxford there are a lot of Chinese tourists (visiting the historic sites) as well as students. I believe the first student case was someone returning from visiting family in Asia, though there was a case at New College recently, I believe they are European.

In that you're wrong. Swansea's in the top 10 of engineering unis in the UK, and usually uttered in the same breath as the Uni of Warwick, who recently began specialising in transport solutions, while Swansea specialises in Energy Safety. It also has one of the larger health care college departments in Wales and is likely already on the frontline for .

Obviously the top two are the Oxbridge Unis, but they get their sticky fingers into everything.

My bad. I was just making a general point.

Swansea was always known for being particulary cutting edge with regard to Aerospace and Metallurgy (it being a powerhouse of the industrial revolution and the mining industry which wasn't just coal - tin, copper, zinc etc.).

But I'm old now and things have moved on I'm sure.

Last time I lived there, there were no chinks at all. Maybe that was my point. It's academic what they are studying there. Might not even be chinks (did they say?).

It's a very run down place compared to what it used to be like. A lot of the student's digs that they will be living in (unless they are very rich) will be in places like The Uplands. A shithole by any standard. They can't all be living in the better parts.

Your point about tourists in Oxford is also pertinent. Can't imagine there are many (or any) chinky tourists in Swansea. Lol.

Savannah, GA is postponing St. Pat's celebrations.
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – Savannah’s St. Patrick’s Day festival and parade have been postponed in the midst of coronavirus concerns, according to the Tourism Leadership Council (TLC).

In a letter to members, TLC said a new date has not been determined. They added, “no businesses are asked to close.”

I'm a little out of the loop. So, how dangerous is this COVID Coronavirus? Some people I know have been saying that it's about as dangerous as the flu, others have been saying it's worse, a few of them could care less. I just want a clear answer.

Oversimplifying things perhaps, but the death rate of Influenza is around 0.1%, while COVID-19 is at around...3.4 or 3.5% right now, unsure on the exact official number.
So for every 1000 people with the flu, statistically 1 will die, while for every 1000 people with COVID-19 34 will die. Noticeably more fatal than flu, but not quite the end of days. Those numbers are averaged out over every age group, with younger people in both illnesses considerably less likely to die, though that's hardly a guarantee an otherwise healthy 30 year old will be fine.

COVID-19 seems to be a good spreader, roughly similar to flu in that respect but numbers are currently much lower in comparison due to the virus being relatively new.
The main concern in my mind is keeping numbers low and spread slow, as well as making sure hospitals are well staffed and equipped in dealing with the virus: around 10-20% of cases were severe enough to require hospitalisation it seems, and these cases require quite a bit of care in both man hours and material, as the lungs fill with fluid requiring draining and breathing apparatus to make sure they get enough air. Also, unlike flu there's no vaccine, so Doctors and nurses are vulnerable to infection, which combined with the burden of serious cases means there's a risk of hospitals being overwhelmed if there's a rapid influx of cases, which seems to be happening in Italy right now.
So trying to keep numbers to a trickle so every case can be treated properly and safely is the smartest strategy in my opinion.

probably because "regular flu" (of which there are multiple strains per year, btw. there isn't one "flu") has been spreading in the community for far longer, has a much lower mortality rate, we can very rapidly make vaccines for them and have adequate treatments lined up. The same cannot be said for covid-19. keep in mind also that while flu testing is extremely common (i've personally gotten it done multiple times this year alone), wuflu testing is rare. there are likely even many people who died from "pneumonia-related complications" who were never tested and thus not marked as a confirmed case/death.

c'mon man, don't go the way of the politicians. countries dont get this fucked up from "just the flu." especially china.

who the fuck lets rats infest their house? and put your rice in a closed container. what are we, animals?

These little critters will bark if a coloured person is even close to your home, and will go postal on anything they can catch. They will also guard your food from anything. Just... don't let them eat the stinker beatle. Their faces will smell like that for days.

I have seen my dear little angel tear apart a porcupine. I was worried he would loose an eye. But the worst thing off was my hand that got all the spikes embedded inside it as he tried to shake the poor Sonichu to death.

If I didn't post this clip, someone very special to me would be very disappointed.

In UK news, 2 more dead. Both within the Midlands, Dudley and Warwickshire. Both elderly, both with underlying conditions. WHO now demanding "aggressive action" and may finally say "oh yeah, this is a pandemic. Whoops, lol. Sorry." as more Chinese yen spill from their fucking pockets.

On MSNBC right now they had an actual virologist - not a talking head - saying "Are you fucking crazy, of course it is in every state" and basically saying if you haven't figured that out yet, you need your head examined.
The map shows regional or widespread influenza activity throughout the entire country, Numbers of hospitalized and dead from the "regular" flu dwarf those from the WuFlu.
Washington’s getting real. Gatherings of over 250 people prohibited in King, Snohomish, and Pierce counties til end of March. Seattle public schools closed for 2 weeks.

Just spoke to my niece who lives in Eastern Washington State. She started feeling very poorly while at work, went to an Urgent Care Center. Dr there told her she had pneumonia, gave her a Z-Pack and 2 whole days off work. No chest X-ray, no swab to check for Strain A, B or Corona. She saw her primary Dr the next day. He said it was probably "just the flu." but gave her the rest of the week off. Once again, no chest X-ray, no swab for any strain of flu. My niece is 26 and other than vaping (grrrr) is healthy.

Needless to say, I am appalled at the lack of care and preparation in the U.S. at this point in the pandemic. I am certain that the virologist is correct, Corona has been in the wild here for at least 2 months.
@JosephStalin My concern is that with the lack of testing here in the U.S, it is not accurate at this point to say that the "regular flu" numbers do not include cases of Covid-19. I suspect we will never know.

@Blop Once again, all the focus and taxes and money is going to the West side of the State. I can pretty well guarantee that Corona is also in Eastern Washington but like always, the profligate spenders in King, Snohomish, and Pierce counties will suck up the resources and forget all about the deplorables on the East side of the Cascades.

I am hoping that no later than next week, we will be seeing flu tests going on for all those who are reporting symptoms and are ill enough to be seeking care. The drive-thru testing that has been implemented in other countries is pretty brilliant. Needs to be done everywhere.

I just had a talk with my dad about whether him and my mom are prepared and he instantly jumped down my throat, angry that I even brought it up.

That says to me that he's scared which makes me even more scared, both of my parents are over 55 so yeah, I'm definitely worried.
Do they watch Fox News all day long?
They're probably still in the nothingburger phase if that's the case.

oh yeah terriers are mean little cuties lmao.

I have a cat and I can't even remember the last time there's been a rodent in my home. I think they can smell cats or something. the most I deal with is stinkbugs or ladybugs normally, but they're just annoying and come in to die.

put your food in closed containers if pests are a concern for you, and also you should probably do some extermination or close up drafts bc it's unhealthy to have pests touching your food.

Colorado has begun implementing drive through testing, though you still need a doctor's order for it.

Person says their dad is scared and you reply with a "Fox news" hot take about " They're probably still in the nothingburger phase if that's the case".
Why would they be scared if they were in a "nothingburger phase"?
Or was this just not reading the post and reflexively blurting out a mid-2000 'Faux News!'?
