Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

This lady can speak of her experiences all she wants, but every country is different. I saw multiple people reblog this on Facebook today, and people are getting hysterical over it.

You know why things got so bad so quickly in Italy? Here's why:

1. The country reacted far too late to it. The United States started to take measures before its first case was found, let alone first casualty.

2. The average age of the people in Italy is about 10 years higher than the United States. This is a huge detail that alarmists are conveniently leaving out when concerning COVID-19

3. As a body of land itself, the United States is far more spread out in terms of population compared to so many other bodies of land, such as China or Italy.

I'm not saying that the United States needs to take it easy and ignore what's going on (and our government isn't doing that, by the way). However, generating absolute panic like this doesn't help anything. Getting people so frantic to the point where they're screwing everyone else over by over buying supplies doesn't help. People not thinking clearly does not help.

Many events have been canceled to the public in the United States already. I'd say that's taking far more effective measures than Italy did before shit hit the fan for them.

Not to mention the fact that the US is banning European travel coming in, cancelling sporting events, closing schools, pressuring people to work from home (which our lazy burgerland ass would LOVE if we're getting paid for it), potentially quarantining cluster areas, creating an entire spike of people washing their hands due to meme culture and facebook alarmism, and pretty much discouraging domestic travel. It's not much but it's at least something.

Roughly speaking, we're about the size of most of Europe, minus Russia. Washington state is probably our version of Italy.

Anyhow, if places start getting quarantined here, I will just stay home with the husband and kids, play around in the garden, and relax.

I'd say that temporarily banning travel from Europe is a huge step in the right direction.

And while it sucks that a lot of fun stuff (like the NCAA Tournament being closed off from the public) is being cancelled, it will at least prevent exceptional people from going to large crowds because "they didn't want to miss Coachella." Haha.

Honestly, I'm very ready for quarantines to happen more and more across the country.

I've decided to stay with my folks during this crisis since we have the most resources stacked up together. Mom works downtown and is waiting for them to tell everyone to just stay the fuck at home. I'm looking forward to some one on one family time binging shit and avoiding the rest of the world.

Crowded events are overrated anyway. Yeah, that's total NEET-speak but I can't imagine a dumber thing to be part of right now with this going on.

Right?? I've seen plenty of warnings to people who smoke cigarettes, but I know a bunch of 20 somethings who vape like fiends, thinking that it is healthier than cigs. IT IS NOT. Clinics have been seeing plenty of kids with severe respiratory compromise from vaping. Scarier still is a lot of the vape juice was coming from China and india. Who knows what the hell else is in that juice.
Sounds like a right horror show at Travis. Sending hugs elbow bumps to ya.

I knew a man who used to vape and smoke. He died a couple of years ago from Pneumonia.

Six new cases total today, overall cases at 21. The two latest ones (not yet counted in some reports) are two 80+ year olds in a veteran's home. Unknown community transmission.

The two biggest universities in the state - Oregon State and University of Oregon - are requiring all finals be done online and are going to have at least the first few weeks of spring term be done all online. No gatherings of 50+ people, sporting event attendance limited to athletes, staff, some media. Though tomorrow and Friday are class days (next week is finals, so this week is "dead week" where you really don't need to show up anyway) and are going on as normal. Portland State is doing spring term online, and is "encouraging" professors to do their exams online.

Edit: More news
Governor orders immediate statewide ban of gatherings of 250+ people for at least the next four weeks. Say non-essential gatherings and meetings of any kind should be canceled.

Article on how the Quebec isn't as widely testing for the virus as they should.

Regarding the Europe travel ban, it feels like a trap for his detractors, who were demanding quicker action, so he banned their city-on-a-hill, the European Union, which will absolutely infuriate them into whining like little bitches.

For now, the only place I plan on going to in the upcoming weeks is my parents' home that's about a 30 minute drive ... Unless I get sick, of course. If I do get sick, then it's going to be my husband's fault, haha. He doesn't work from home right now ... Though I wouldn't be shocked if that were to change soon.

I've already been binge watching a bunch of stuff over the past 10 days with my husband. I am finally watching Avatar: The Last Airbender, and I've just been really focused on enjoying that right now (and also being mad at myself for waiting 15 damn years to watch it, haha).

For this upcoming weekend, I was invited to go to a St. Patrick's Day Parade (which has not been cancelled yet, btw). I haven't seen these friends in a long while and I was very much looking forward to going. However, after thinking about it over and over for the past handful of days, I finally told them I couldn't make it because of what's going on. I'm sure they're writing me off as paranoid, but oh well. I have a parent with COPD, and they don't. I simply can't risk catching the virus just because I wanted to have fun and drink beer in a large crowd, lol.

Add to that air quality index. The initial red zones were fairly polluted, just like Wuhan and places in Iran and South Korea.

But that's kind of besides the point, she's talking about the experience of escalating stress on the healthcare system. It's kind of scary to think the public safety framework could just choke up with the dead.

Today, scientists from Princeton proved the virus is airborne. Your point about differences in population density definitely matters.

I wonder if they use temp home healthcare services? Granted there are plenty other ways it got in there.

Heaven's Mercy upon you brave souls. :semperfidelis:

Nobody can accurately give a good estimate on the case fatality rate for the simple fact that not all cases are being diagnosed many countries are telling people to stay home and self quarantine themselves and to only go to the hospital if they become serious or critical.

For most of the outbreak most countries would only test you if you met a certain criteria mainly flu like symptoms and must have traveled or been in contact with people who have traveled to affected countries.

Therefore a large amount of cases are recovering at home effectively lowering the case fatality rate since its mainly very sick people getting tested and in need of hospitalization for most countries. Alternatively there are probably a bunch of dead people who live alone in apartment buildings and homes that were too lazy or too sick to go to the hospital and kicked the bucket.

Denver International Airport Maintenance Employee tests positive for being raped (I don't think it was consensual, but you never know) by Corona Chan. Officials maintain that passengers would not have been exposed and other employees would have had little exposure.

Also....

"Three TSA Screeners in San Jose, Calif., have tested positive for COVID-19, coming into contact with thousands of passengers, NPR reported.

Screeners at Los Angeles International Airport are in self-quarantine after two Department of Homeland Security workers contracted the virus while performing screenings on passengers arriving from China, according to the Los Angeles Daily News."
