Giving you an optimistic rating, because, yeah ... It is optimistic.

However, I'm with you on hoping that this wakes people up (but it probably won't, given the partisan reactions from the media and our representatives alone).

Le sigh.
To be honest, even though I disagree with the extent of it, I hope that Tramp's travel ban on Europe wakes up people that MAYBE...JUST MAYBE his travel bans weren't based on racist intentions and based on safety concerns, like it was intended in the first place.

I know that a lot of people are panicking at the headlines about Disneyland shutting down for two weeks.

Here's some perspective to get people to calm down a little bit:

Park attendance has probably been abysmal over the past week. It would be probably far more expensive for Disney to keep things up and running for such a low attendance than it would be to just shut it down for a while.

Is COVID-19 bad enough to the point where Disneyland has shut down? Yes. Does this mark the absolute end of times? No. This is a business decision on Disney's part where they chose the option that will cost them less money in the long run.

I'm not sure why people are freaking out over that. They're just playing it safe since Disneyland tends to get the most visitors from now to Summer. It's the smart thing to do.
They most likely don't want a repeat of the Measles outbreak which went around in the park.

Doubtful. More likely they are going to simultaneously complain that it should have been done sooner while simultaneously complaining that they are racist.

Edit: Grammar

On the question of higher estrogen-levels maybe playing a role in better outcomes in COVID-patients there has been a NYT-article two weeks ago, linked upthread. And some joking around about maybe mtf-trannies and women being the sole survivors after SHTF..

Assuming the continued availability of estrogen and progesterone in such a scenario.

The higher rates in males probably have 2 causes. One, males have substantially more lung capacity. Simply bigger lungs with more surface area. Thus more available and exposed receptors for the virus to attack.

Second is we are still looking at data heavily skewed by China. Chinese men smoke like chimneys.
Estrogen is a factor. Something about heightened immunity .... Something about it being a reason for why more women develop autoimmune problems.

Fuck you all and your plague hysteria. Because of this crap, all the universities in the country are doing online classes and shutting down everything and it sucks.

Edit: This accidentally double-posted, and now I'm really conflicted. See, I would delete one, but which one? If I delete the one with all the downvotes, it looks like I'm a puss. But if I delete the one with the upvotes, it's like punching myself. What's a nigga to do?

Double Edit: Downvotes it is.

Bwahahaha now a bunch of people who never posted in this thread are coming to complain about the problems the virus is causing. Next time pay attention to what is going on around you and be prepared for shit when things go tits up. 3 months of warning signs ignored and now crying begins.

Their now going deep with it being "Murrica's fault."

"A Chinese government spokesman said Thursday that "it might be US Army who brought the epidemic to Wuhan," pushing one of several popular coronavirus conspiracy theories in China.

Zhao Lijian, a Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman, called attention to the admission Wednesday by Robert Redfield, the director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, that some Americans who were said to have died from influenza may have actually died from the coronavirus (COVID-19).

"When did patient zero begin in US? How many people are infected?" he asked. "What are the names of the hospitals? It might be US Army who brought the epidemic to Wuhan. Be transparent! Make public your data! US owe us an explanation!"

In a short thread on Twitter, a social media platform inaccessible in China, Zhao demanded to know how many of the 34 million influenza infections and 20,000 associated deaths during this latest flu season were related to COVID-19.

The coronavirus, now a pandemic, first appeared in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, capital of hard-hit Hubei province and the epicenter of a serious outbreak that has claimed the lives of thousands, the majority in China....."
Not that it is ... but who the hell cares if patient 0 is American or had ties to the US?

If Zhao Lijian were a Kiwi Farms user, and sperged about this shit, I would put him on ignore.

I sometimes wish that the world operated more like a discussion forum. If only we had a "block" or "ignore" button IRL.

You know this is fucking serious when the Mormon leaders are saying "Don't go to church." The sacrament is still important, but the bishopric for each ward's gonna still have to figure out how to make sure the sacrament is still taken by the members. So I'm guessing they're gonna show up to each house, checklist in hand, in masks and gloves or something.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

As promised in our letter of March 11, 2020, we continue to monitor the changing conditions related to COVID-19 throughout the world. We have considered the counsel of local Church leaders, government officials and medical professionals, and have sought the Lord’s guidance in these matters. We now provide the following updated directions.

Beginning immediately, all public gatherings of Church members are being temporarily suspended worldwide until further notice. This includes:
  • Stake conferences, leadership conferences and other large gatherings.
  • All public worship services, including sacrament meetings.
  • Branch, ward and stake activities.
Where possible, leaders should conduct any essential leadership meetings via technology. Specific questions may be referred to local priesthood leaders. Further direction related to other matters will be provided.

Bishops should counsel with their stake president to determine how to make the sacrament available to members at least once a month.

We encourage members in their ministering efforts to care for one other. We should follow the Savior’s example to bless and lift others.

We bear our witness of the Lord’s love during this time of uncertainty. He will bless you to find joy as you do your best to live the gospel of Jesus Christ in every circumstance.

Sincerely,
The First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

Couple tidbits from Ireland and Britain folks

In Eire, a lot of civil society is shut down, tentatively till 29th March. It's ultimately to private businesses' discretion though, and in the cases of several universities, they're just digitising their entire academic output for the rest of the semester.
The army's being tagged for deployment in the next few hours to maintain order. Nothing's gone to shit yet but it'll be to assist hospitals, ensure the public remain civil, and intimidate the scum.
Panic buying is happening on dried foods and cleaning products, which could potentially develop into anarchy but I think it's a sign of widespread vigilance that will be necessary over the coming months.
Healthcare is notoriously overstretched, so the orders to shut down schools and offices for the next fortnight is aimed at minimising pressure. By the 29th of March anybody who's infected today will show symptoms, and probably won't infect anybody else (aside from family) since there's no sports being played etc.
As well as this, veteran health workers are being put on standby and all sorts of PSAs are being done to spread news.
I say good move, the public are fully wise to the danger now, so we can act appropriately without contrarians inadvertently killing us all.

Meanwhile, the UK is in a contain phase but I don't know how much longer it can persist. There's a weird mixture of wishful thinking in conjunction with downright incompetence.
London seems to be operating as though if they pretend the virus doesn't affect its denizens, then they can will forth that reality into being. Far too few people wash their hands as often as they're supposed to, so when there's panic buying (as there has been in London for a week now) the stocks are depleted by people reasonably hoarding toilet roll, soap etc but in the process deprive millions of people of essential goods, which just makes people freak out even more.
This virus is going to cause a recession, but I'd prefer that over thousands of unnecessary deaths any day. I know somebody in the NHS and things are properly fucked on that front. They don't have masks for the staff, and the ones they have ordered are cheaper but useless. Apparently, the cheap ones totally fail at providing a tight seal around the face for breathing, meaning the frontline staff are guaranteed to catch the bug when it reaches them.
"Survival of the fittest now" was the parting line from my contact

Client that closed NYC offices now closed all Canadian and west cost offices. Canada office due to proximity of an infected person, West coast offices due to an uber eats / pizza delivery / etc person testing positive after making a delivery.

No office visitors allowed, no food delivery allowed, no clients allowed. NO ONE on company property not an employee that has to be there.

All meetings with people outside of the company are to be done via Zoom, no in person meetings.

No business travel, the previous exemptions are now gone, no travel at all.

No attending conferences, awards, expos, conventions, or other industry events allowed.

No in person meetings between staff without approval. Need to speak to your boss? Skype.

I knew it was going to happen any minute, our school district is officially closed for the next 6 weeks. Went to Target today and the toilet paper aisle was completely empty. I should have known better after seeing pictures of people load up carts with multiple packs of it. You snooze you lose :'(

I honestly hope Trudeau and his wife are sick and even though I don't like him I hope they both recover, he's awful but he doesn't deserve death. Him possibly being sick will hopefully be the fire under his ass to realise the gravity of the situation and hopefully push for Canada to close up for a while and quarantine this shit out.

This might be terrible for the economy but so is mass sickness and death. A month of everything ground to a halt to stop this thing is nothing in the grand scheme of humanity.
